Sometimes it's about where you get drafted. Jets were probably the worst situation he could've been drafted to. We're finally seeing the talent everyone saw at West Virginia
no he wasn’t drafted to a bad jets team lol he was on a very good one actually he was there the year they went 10-6 he just tore his acl and fitzmagic took over
I saw this man drop a 70 piece on Baylor from the 50 yard line and it was easily the most entertaining football game I've been too and I've been to a few Steelers and ravens games at this point
Geno's a great story. I'm not a Seahawks fan but I'm quietly cheering for him. Gotta love people that keep at it and eventually find success. Now he needs a little help from the defense
He learned his lesson though. Got socked in the mouth for being a bad guy back with the Jets. It’s crazy though. It made him stronger in a way and here he is more humble than ever.
fingers crossed this no fluke but yeah it all depends on who drafts and how much the franchise is willing to work w. the player granted player shows same or more interest
The problem is. They get drafted at the Top of the draft by BAD teams. The teams/organization/Coaching/management is Bad for a reason. I think they should force some of these Horrible teams to have a choice where they can forfeit their top 5 pick for 2 mid first rounders(Outside of trading with other teams. to allow some of these Mid tier teams to draft the Better to best prospects and the Bad teams to pick up multiple starting caliber players. its ridiculous sometimes to watch these players not get the support and nurture they need to develop.
I am convinced Vince Young would have been a good NFL QB if he never played to Jeff Fischer, who didn’t want him but Titans Bud Adams forced him to draft Vince. Vince never got the support he needed.
As a Hawks fan, one thing you will always notice during gameday since he was Russ' backup, he was communicating and watching the teams play with an eagle eye every single damn play on the sideline. Without fail. He learned, he payed attention and now it's all coming to fruit. Will we make the playoffs this year? Pff, most likely not, but holy hell is Geno fun as hell to watch.
If we don't make playoffs its not on genos shoulders for not doing so it's on pete Carroll and his year after year ability to amaze us with ever more horrible defensive play than we saw the year before. Our dline cant stop the run and that's Carroll number 1 focus for the defense to be good at. And what's up with jones after being one of the top 10 corners in the league end of last year not even dressing for multiple games? It's like we are writing off our best performers from last year to instead go with our draft pics but damn
@@TAGGdinc um draft picks? Michael Jackson maybe, but coby is a slot corner, and Tariq is a monster getting 4 turnovers in 5 games Also Sidney Jones probably didn't show the same dominance its not like SJ has been consistently elite in his career
HIs play is great, but this is a completely different team from last year offensively. A solid draft for the Oline positions RB depth aside from the recent injury and TE depth. Plus a QB that spent two years in a system Implemented that was just implemented 2 years ago.
As a lifelong Seattle fan I can say without a doubt that everyone here, except Coach Pete, had their doubts that Geno was gonna be the answer to Russ leaving. The fact that he is outplaying Russ is an absolute shock to us all. What this man is doing is amazing the whole league, not just Hawks fans..
Well not too hard to outplay Russ at the moment but Geno is outplaying most of the other QBs in the league outside of Allen/Mahomes and without the OLine.
As one of the Geno detractors, it’s now becoming clear that the reason he looked so poor filling in for Russ in three of his four games last season was that he was trying to run Russ’ bizarre offense. A system designed specifically for him shows how he can ball out - to the rest of the league’s detriment. Also, please pass the road salt. My boiled crow needs some seasoning.
@@Ironcabbit And he didn't even look that poor. Considering how Russell WIlson looked most of the season, Geno running a similar offense looked not that far off.
Ha ha ha, what a story Mark. Forreal though, Geno couldn’t ask for a better situation to revive his career. Between locketts veteran presence, DK’s shear beastliness, and Pete Carrol’s coaching this is just a perfect place for him. Very happy for Geno (and very happy I have him on my fantasy team 😉)
💚💙this girl loves her seahawks 💚💙it's so refreshing to hear you talk about geno in that manner. I wasn't too happy to hear he would be our #1. But he has proven me so wrong. Looking back now at Russell and Geno. He is definitely better for us. 💯💚💙
I will echo the Pete Carroll shout out. Not to utter The QB Who Shall Not Be Named, but it seems to me Pete should be getting his own special feature examining what he does to help questionable QBs perform at top level.
Smith's story is a big deal in today's NFL, where every prospect has to be all-pro coming out of college or they are a bust. In saner times you developed a player, and sometimes that could take a few seasons. Some of my favorite players from back in the day probably wouldn't have made it out of their rookie season in today's NFL.
(Soo… perhaps the NFL expands to allow a larger talent pool??) Imagine an NFL with 34 teams. Or even 36, or hell, 40? 40 is a bid of a stretch right now, but if we expand to 34 teams, that’s another what? 100+ spots?
And this is why every QB that the Jets have drafted in the past 15 years (e.g. Sanchez, Smith, Darnold and now possibly Wilson) has failed. Every single one of them was a bit of a project, yet the team and media still anointed them as saviors and/or expected them to produce immediately.
I'm still in a play-it-by-year with Geno. The Seahawks line has been holding up fairly well so far this year. Geno always threw a pretty ball and had the skills. He was also fast at going through his progressions even during his rookie season. What killed him was pressure. He handled it the worst of any QB I've ever seen. I think he was scared of getting hit for too long and automatically reacted by instinctively running backwards. That would instantly kill so many drives. If he fixed this issue he's a good QB. That was the reason he got benched for the Fitz in the first place...and he did the same thing when he started on the Giants. Maybe being a backup for all those years and sitting behind Rivers take hit after hit on a brutal O line taught him to stand tall and take them. Idk...he was always a frustrating case of good talent handicapped by not being mentally tough for the game. Kinda like Locker.
This has to be very unusual, for an apparent bust to keep refining nuanced gameplay from the bench, only to show up many years later looking like a franchise player. How many QBs' careers track anywhere near similar to this? Kind of Kurt Warner, though through different leagues? The sample size is small, but the apparent mental game elements are there and aren't likely to go away so long as Smith is healthy. I don't think the tape was anywhere near this level for him when he was last a full-time starter with the Jets. A lot of QBs that are backups (or even starters) stay at about the same level of ability after 2-3 years in the league. If Smith sustains this, he'll have shown work ethic and ability to adjust/grow as a backup that most fail as starters. I want to see it. It's a great story.
@melting chocolate its bot compearable because kirk cousins will never play like this, it was just the last QB i remember who got a big check that was basically a backup for a while
Kurt Warner went from Canada to MVP and Super Bowl. So did Rich Gannon. Another example is Nick Foles. Went from nobody took over the season after Wentz goes down wins out in the playoffs then wins SuperBowl MVP. Geno has the same potential from my analysis. If the Seahawks can build a defense I think Smith can take them deep into the playoffs next year.
Geno always had the arm talent. But if you go back and look at some old tape on him, he had NO pocket awareness coming out of WVU. Over the last 9 years, he's developed a lot. His awareness within the pocket is now a strength, and combine it with experience and that arm talent, and it's no wonder he's lighting up the NFL now.
Kudos to Seahawks Management who invested on his talent, and, oach Pete who saw that talent in him when everyone are doubting! Coach Pete's decision to have him as a starting QB was unwavering!
He also of course grew up. That 'altercation with a teammate' was a late round pick, who wanted Geno to come to his hometown to do a camp. Geno agreed. Dude had shirts made. Dude told everyone an NFL QB was coming. Dude paid for Geno's plane ticket. Geno didn't show. Dude asked Geno for the money back, just for the plane ticket, and Geno said no. A month goes by, the locker room is laughing at this dude, mocking him, he's disappointed all those kids and parents, he's out a few hundred dollars for the plane ticket. So he goes up to Geno and asks for the money back. Geno mocks him, and says its chump change anyways, not paying him. I ain't saying he was right, but I'm not saying he was wrong either. I'd probably have punched Geno as well. It humbled him, I'm sure. And he's become a much better leader, someone you can believe in.
@@deathhimself1653 it kinda sounds like he got what he deserved, but maybe more than that… his whole career was possibly derailed because of that, but it might have been hard to maintain the respect of tm8s when you act like that anyways… Regardless, it seems like he’s probably matured a lot since those days, so who knows what kind of person he is now
One things for sure, Lockett is elite at selling the fade and gettin DBs hips to flip before he cuts in for a deep post. In man coverage he’s able to create 2-3yds of separation by using just one phantom step that doesn’t cause him to lose any speed. Looks like he can actually plant and slightly increase his speed on his cut
Pretty much every football fan should be wathing this guy and rooting for him. What a talent. I'm not sure if the hawks even have to waist a pick or two to move up on a QB next year. they could just continue to stack the defence. Smith is enough if he can do half of this the whole year. Seattle defence needs some help. all drafts on D and they will be a contender with Geno Next year.
Yeah grab a couple DBs and linebackers and maybe some lineman depth for off and def. I have a good feeling for seattles future if geno can play like this for a couple more years
@@kimyona9746 yea we need elite pass rush and our defense could easily be top 5 with developing other key players we already have. Especially with Woolen playing out of his mind and hopefully Adams coming back healthy
Amazingly well done video. Geno has been throwing passes to Lockett, Metcalf, and Dissly for years (during practice), and the fact that they can trust and rely on each other on a intuitive level is the secret behind so many of those amazing throws you highlighted. The man has put in the work and continued to develop in a way that very few backups ever do, or even commit to trying to do. Its a testament to his tenacity: nobody (except maybe Pete) saw this level of play coming, but my god is it fun to watch.
I love a good underdog story. I hope that Geno Smith continues to show up and show out and maybe one day be considered amongsst the greats. Good luck Geno!
I mean it can't be fluke at this point right? Those 3 throws in the Saints game were amazing. I always think he can't keep this up but he immediately shuts me up on Sunday's. I'm not even a Hawks fan and I'm cheering him on more than my own team!
Coaches will often dole out incremental bits of the playbook to find the upper limit of what a quarterback can process. Pete Carroll has emphasized the fact that none of this is happening with Geno. He digests everything they put on his plate. In other words, the Seahawks are using the entire playbook. So, what does that mean exactly? It means the QB isn't being spoon fed small areas of the field to survey. In other words, they are not dividing up the field into small portions to create easier reads. It means the wide receivers are in play. It means the deep ball is in play. It means the entire playbook is available. This is beyond the scope of a typical career backup.
Unlike Russ who despised throwing over the middle of the field. The majority of his throws where outs or sideline streaks. Geno is much more versatile in his comfortability in regards to the passing game than Russ ever was.
@@arecaubrecht162 Pete’s Offense is pretty heavy middle of the field throws it’s run as much and throw on play actions most of the time splitting the middle up
No this just shows how much they had to hand hold wilson and develop their passing attack around a guy who needs extra help making reads of defenses and cant go through a progression to save his life. Wilson always needed the routes ran to give him an ability to look at 2 routes at the same time instead of being able to quickly progress from read to read
@@TAGGdinc clearly you didn’t read into what I said, yes Russ had to be hand held, which heavily closed the playbook off for more than a couple off plays which heavily go into middle of the field
I really wish breakdowns like these were more commonplace in the mainstream. Most analysis you see on TV during half-time shows is mostly garbage. I really appreciate all the detail this goes into. And honestly, I have to say it never occurred to me just how chaotic the line can be, in terms of everyone knowing who they are supposed to block, despite the defense going to constantly change their looks. Instead we usually get the same old cliches that completely avoid any actual discussion on the true drivers of success. Football is usually a little better than other sports (hockey is like the lowest end of the spectrum where analysts phone it in and only ever conclude the grittiest team that wants it more just also happens to coincide with whose score is higher, once again), but its still generally pretty surface level into what they COULD be getting into. Think this is the first vid of yours I saw, I'm looking forward to the others!
Geno Smith is playing surprisingly well and if the Seahawks can shore up their defense as they did last Sunday, Oct.16, they just might end up over .500. That would represent a significant improvement over last year. I like what Pete Carroll is doing.
Glad for Gino. Succes in any field is comprised by a lot of things, talent, preparation, and many things out of your control. But the key element to me is...perseverance.
subscribed, this channel has a level commentary, not too much hype, just the facts and i like the technical know how that doesn't overshadow the content... and also i love geno's story as a hawks fan and a fan of the underdog. Keep it up Billy and keep it up Geno.
He showed glimpses of this in 2014 week 2 against the Green Bay Packers. Although he had an interception in that game and only scored a rushing touchdown, but the Jets were winning that game in Green Bay 21 to 3 in the 2nd quarter and I remember thinking wow that dude has a really good arm. A game-tying 37-yard touchdown throw by Geno Smith to Jeremy Kerley with five minutes to go in the fourth quarter was wiped out when assistant coach Marty Mornhinweg called the Jets' final timeout just as the ball was snapped; even more egregiously Mornhinweg was not authorized to call timeouts, the responsibility of head coach Rex Ryan. The Jets failed to convert after this and fell 31-24; it marked only the second time for Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers that he won a game despite a deficit exceeding eight points.
If nothing else, he lasted longer than his buddies that got drafted out of WV. Tayvon Austin never really developed into anything and Stedman Baily had his career cut short with a terrible off field injury. I'm actually am starting Geno this week in my fantasy league. He finally found the right place for him! Some QB's have to bounce around a while before they find a home. He's certainly making R. Wilson look like a bum.
Tavon Austin is another perfect example of a player who ended up on the wrong team. He's a Tyreek Hill type of player but they tried using him like a big bodied possession WR and it didn't work. Same with DeAnthony Thomas.
The reason ur starting geno is because Arizona has like the worst secondary in the NFL and you would be crazy to start anyone else after what geno has shown he can do to subpar defenders yet San Fran still beat the breaks off of us don't forget that.
@@JesusChrist2000BC Well, Austin had several teams try him. The Rams knew what he was and he DID make some big plays for them, he was also great as a punt and kickoff returner. The Rams DID resign him to a rather large deal based on his potential but it never really manifested and I heard he's a bit of a locker room distraction.
You're right about these throws, all of a sudden Im a Geno fan. Also like how seahawks are "under the radar" in a way going halfway into the season. They could be very dangerous in December.
@@christopher7763 The man has made mistakes but pushed on to a better place. I respect that. I'm a cop too- I celebrate those that F up then get better.
Geno only needed someone to believe in him. Do you think Geno's improvement is why Russell fast tracked his return last year after a hand injury? Never let the backup dude play, else they might see that he is better than the starter.
@@henrim9348 He knew he wanted out of Seattle so getting hurt and replaced by Geno Smith mid season after he was healthy would have destroyed his leverage and value. He's got what he wants now so I don't see him pulling the same stunt, he's in conservation mode now just milking a paycheck.
That is what happened with 3x Superbowl champion, HOF'er, Joe Montana. He was a 3rd round pick and only came into the game after the Niners quarterback got injured. The rest is blissfully history. Such a joy to watch!
Henri, no, because for 3 of 4 games last year Geno struggled to run a (retrospectively) bizarre offense designed for Russ. Now that Geno has his own offense he’s balling out.
I think people don’t give enough credit to the Seahawks coaching. Like all I hear is people shit on Carroll and the coordinators but they can turn nobodies into stars
They thing about Geno that never made sense to me is that he lost his job through no fault of his own and never got another chance until now. And thats despite the fact that he made serious improvements from year 1 to year 2 while playing for the freaking Jets. I never got how so many other completely mediocre QBs got to hang around for 4-5 full seasons, despite putting up worse numbers than Geno did, and showing no improvement, but somehow Geno didn't get another chance to be the starter.
As a die hard WVU fan, I'm enjoying seeing Geno finally get his time to shine. If he had been drafted anywhere other than where he went I think he would have had a decent career.
@Jose Perez as a Packer fan I can say I knew Nathaniel hacket wasn't gonna be good as a HC. Maybe he'll prove me wrong next season but they pretty much already failed.
I always knew Geno just needed to sit behind an experienced QB and weapons, he clearly didn't have either in New York. For all my bashing I give Petey for the Seahawks, he sure did make the wise decision with Geno.
So ya he had time as a starter. And then spent time as number 2 to Eli Manning, Phillip Rivers and Russel Wilson for the next few years. I read an interview where he said during game day on the sidelines he always wore his helmet so he could hear the plays being called and went over in his head what he'd do etc etc.. The guy put in the work and its looking like its paying off. I have to admit I was hoping to have the Seahawks start Lock just out of curiosity for a few games at least, but I'm glad Pete went with Geno and I wish only the best for him.
3:36 He says the coverage is Cover 2 which I can tell from the 2 high safety shell. I'm more wondering about the guy standing at the 25 yard line. Would him dropping back make it Cover 3? Or is he some type of robber? The guy I'm talking about kind of floats ~20 yards from the LOS,
Thank you for showing me just how great our quarterback is!! I had no idea now incredibly difficult it is to be a great QB!!Your Knowledge of this game is amazing! I've never watched and heard anyone go in to such detail about the names of plays and plans. Thankyou!! I'm a true # 12. I have to admit when we "lost" Russell Wilson, I didn't even want to watch another Seahawks game again. 😞Many of my friends and fans thought it was the end of an Era and that the sun would never shine on the Seahawks again😩. It was a gloomy rainy day! 🌧But then... the clouds parted and the Sunshine begin to glimmer through the clouds🌦 and standing on that field was a man wearing the number 7 and his name was Geno Smith. And the whole world changed. Not just for Seahawks fans but for the entire NFL fans all together. I've got to be honest and tell you I never heard of him before. I was more surprised to hear that he had been on our team for a few years. Now I KNOW who HE is and he's going to be on our team for many more years to come.. or at least I hope so. That he's the number one quarterback in the NFL is mind blowing. It's been an absolute joy to watch him show himself to all of us. Yeah we've had a rough couple games. Yeah our defense needs some work but look how we played last Sunday😳! That was some seriously good balanced football. When time, practice and commitment come together ...MIRACLES HAPPEN!! 🤗When everybody does what they were supposed to do... MAGICAL THINGS can happen!
It’s about time to develop and the right coaching staff to enhance your strengths and shore up your weaknesses. Good on geno he’s obviously put in the time energy and effort in improving his game as well.
Geno is the type of enigma we have only seen in recent history with players like Gannon. Has Geno always been a great football mind? Did he spend 9 off seasons with QB gurus? Because some of the head coaches he played under were terrible, but also got the jobs because of their OC or QB coach supposed prowess. I’d like to hear from the likes of Bill Polian and other GMs as to what they think he was coming out of WVA and what they see now. My supposition is that his contemporaries from 12 years ago, like the dude who broke his jaw are out of the league, and so went his bad name amongst players. Now he has confidence. Additionally, last year he surprisingly won some games while Russ was out.
Watching Geno drop to the 2nd round was heartbreaking. I’ve always rooted for him. Now that he’s our QB, I couldn’t be happier. He’s playing lights out and gaining more confidence.
20 or 30 different people told me that Lock would win the job. Then when he didn’t, a whole bunch of other people said Geno will fail, get benched, we would see Lock by week 4. The obsessed Lock fandom has been really quiet for the past month though… I’m sure they still think Lock is their guy but now they look really stupid talking about “how bad Geno will be” this year. I’m guessing if Lock got the start he would have a 78-80 rating with about 5TD to 5INT and a couple of lost fumbles.
As a West Virginian and a proud fan of our beloved Mountaineers and remembering the game he had against Clemson in Dabo’s first it’s awesome too see Geno having a great year and I believe Pete Carrol is the perfect coach for him I hope he keeps showing the world he belongs
This is the story of the year as far as seahawk fans are concerned. It is really unbelievable to see how well he continues to play. I'm a believer, let's go geno
The story of the year is how many Seattle fans don’t know about Geno’s recent dui arrest and shameful treatment of police officers. He’s truly a great guy, very humble! Still hasn’t even apologized for it! 😂
Somebody asked who the MVP was in the last game. While everyone was choosing def players, I still chose Geno because if he had even one mistake it would have been a loss. His maturity is amazing.
The Seahawks may completely avoid a rebuild because of how well the offense has continued operating without Wilson. Smith has really come in clutch and surprised everyone, and as a Seahawks fan, I hope he continues to.
I live in Seattle and am a Seahawks fan, of course. I knew Smith was going to be great as Seahawks main QB after seeing him play last year while filling in while Wilson was out with an injury. Smith performed very well during those games.
He really did play good in those games last year, now that i think about it. he just seemed to always lose it on one mistake late in the game, but otherwise he was doing this shit then too
He was showing this last year, too. The game he came in for Wilson on we may have won if Lockett didn’t trip to set up the turnover, and then Geno was strip sacked by TJ Watt, who would go on to be the defensive player of the year, could have happened to anyone. We were losing games because for a period of time last season we ranked 32/32 on defensive yards allowed per game. Picking up Tariq Woolen, Uchenna Nwosu, and two excellent linemen was the right move. Geno isn’t surprising me one bit.
Learning about football because my partner loves it and she just said “you just watched your first film” 🥹 realizing how complex football really is! Shoutout to you and the players/coaches who have to know all of this stuff
I'm a Jets fan, and Geno Smith is not a case of bad team good QB. He's just gotten better and more mature as a QB. Glad he's doing well, and realizing his potential. Wish the whole NFL would go back to making QB's sit for a year before starting, especially the bad teams.
+ Great video and an awesome inspiring story. Your headline "The NFL owes Geno Smith an apology" doesn't really make sense though. The NFL doesn't owe apologies to players that are late bloomers. What is the NFL supposed to say? Sorry we recognize in all those years of mediocre play that you had this in you ? Geno Smith deserves all the credit in the world for what he is doing but he's not owed an apology.
Geno Smith should be thanking Pete and Schneider for giving him the opportunity to develop while Russell ran his course. You should do a video on this of how Geno became the QB in Seattle today!
Never say never. With our offense playing well including kenneth walker, if our defense steps up like they did in Arizona we might be okay and surprise alot of people. The defense is showing signs it's just a building process with the rookies
Everyone always forgets a little known backup from the 49ers who went from bench to starter. Ever heard of Steve Young? Many top prospects need a bit to mature or are simply shoved into a scheme and told to make it work. Jets and Geno are a perfect example of this. None of his high school or college experience worked within that offensive scheme. Even in his time at WVU he was always a broken play kinda guy. Sadly no matter how much raw talent you have, you just can’t fit a square peg in a round hole.
