Frank Bruno vs James Quick Tillis.
In the red corner standing at 6 feet 3 inches tall, weighing in at a lean 226 pounds and sporting a body as if it had been moulded by Dorian Yates himself. The True Brit himself, Frank Bruno. Frank would be coming into this fight on the back of his loss to Tim Witherspoon for the heavyweight championship title. Looking to regain his confidence and looking to get back to his knockout ways.
His opponent for the evening would be a fighter known for his quick hands in the ring and even quicker hands with the draw, the fighting cowboy, James Tillis.
Below the belt boxing; Frank Bruno vs James Quick Tillis. 1980s Boxing

People only remember Mike Tyson from after he went off the rails, early on he was very respectful and polite.

I'm sure they knew eachother previously. I think Frank did some sparring with Mike when Mike was 18 or 19?

@@vinylrulesok8470 Not sure about that, I know Lennox sparred with Mike when the Canadian boxing team was visiting the US.

@@darthwiiziusYes it was with Lewis, not Bruno. They were actually almost ‘friends’. Tyson was even showing Lewis different fights on tape from the collection off his manager Jimmy Jacobs. Before sparring with him. So I assume they had some down time together as well as gym time.

@@_bellatrix_potens_-bps-8366 Gus D'amato got them to spar (I think Mike was 15 and Lennox was 16 at the Time) and called the whole gym to watch exclaiming "These two will be fighting for the World title in the future", the first round went to Mike with his aggression but Lennox took control in the second, Gus stopped it at that point. Fun fact: They both had grudges with Tyrell Biggs. Mike lost his Olympic team spot so turned pro early and Lennox got a corrupt decision against Biggs, who he dominated, in the '84 Olympics costing Lewis an easy Gold and making him stay amateur for 4 more years. Poor Tyrell, he got hammered twice.

@@vinylrulesok8470 Correct, absolutely. People think he’s a Brawler but he was extremely elusive and had fantastic footwork and boxing IQ. He just chose not to use it so much later on in his carrer. From maybe the Bonesrusher Smith fight for the WBA belt onwards. Especially after getting rid of Kevin Rooney in his corner. He didn’t even have the ‘hardest punch’ it was said. (although to be fair, the leverage he gets in his shots using his legs and whole body and hips to put all 220 lbs behind it, as well as being such an accurate marksman and the way people went down, makes me dubious as to how anyone is measuring this) It was the Speed , accuracy AND power that they were delivered at, with flurries and combinations. That’s what people said made him special. For me it was everything. The total package. He had the genes, he had the physique, he had the strength, He had the will, he had the hate, he had the killer instinct, he wanted to hurt you, he wanted to be the best, he had the stamina, he had the chin, he had the boxing skills (when he bothered to use them earlier on in his career) He was a true ‘fighter’ who fell into the hands of just the right custodians to hone that into a phenomenon the world had seen few of in any sport. But such is life, cruel. And it snaps back and takes a lot away. When Cus died, his disastrous and costly 8 months marriage to Robin Givens, his ‘rape’ charge and conviction, associations with Don King. It greatly distracted and hampered an already emotionally prone young human being who was at the cusp of pushing what we knew to be possible. We love to bring someone down. (Not a big deal, but the video collection of boxing fights actually belonged to Jimmy Jacobs , Cus’s friend and associate who became Co manager of Tyson with Bill Cayton as he trusted them. It was (is?) the largest or most comprehensive video archive of boxing fights in the world allegedly. Jacobs was much loved by Tyson too but he too passed due to leukaemia very shortly after he became champion.) That’s why I feel for Tyson. He never got a fair shot at just being able to do what he was just best at doing. Fighting Queensbury rules in a ring undistracted. He didn’t have the emotional support growing up to be able to handle such pressures at such a young age. We are talking about him in trouble or arrested and charged 40 times before he was 13 already in the juvenile delinquent reform school. Within a few years at 18 he is one of the most promising prospects in heavyweight boxing since George Foreman. By 20 he is the youngest ever heavyweight champion as he goes and collects and unifies the belts by beating each individual champion. And then Spinks to make sure he completes lineal champion (utter demolition. Spinks spirit ran away at the sound of the bell and left his body to take 90 seconds of punishment and disintegrate rather than crumble, he was visibly shi**ing himself) and shows “Ring magazine” how truly out of their backside they can talk sometimes. As they had spinks as the #1 in their opinion despite him giving up his IBF to fight Gerry Cooney instead of take part in the unification tournament earlier. So Tyson does this all by the age of 21? 22? Imagine the vultures, the constant tugging in loads of directions. Fake admiration, peoples eyes on your money, jealousy. All thrown at a young man so quickly, all in such stark contrast to his upbringing, having his mentors who made it all happen not be there any longer to guide him. He had no one he could trust doing things he could never have been able to do alone.

@@rodneybutler9266 Yes. As an athlete. But not as a fighter. He’s an emotional guy which is lovely. But the others want to hurt and take the other persons health away. For real. Imagine having that on your side when you fight. You become relentless and it is as mentioned in the comment above - that killer instinct. Doesn’t matter how accurately you can shoot targets with a rifle at a range; if you’re going to hesitate and get nervous when it comes to shooting a person. You won’t make a good rifleman even with superior skills. Which Frank didn’t have either to be fair. “It’s not the size of the dog, but the size of the fight in the dog” I mean I love the guy. But he achieved as much as he could. He fulfilled his potential. Lucky to be champ once, which he deserved for pure persistence. He’s still a pride to Great Britain and will always be fondly remembered and loved.

That was exactly the reason we added that piece. I think it’s so easy to get caught up in the part of MT life where his mental health deteriorated rapidly. The corruption of fame, money and prison will only bring out the worst in a man. I actually find it sad to watch Young interviews with him, being so polite and softly spoken.

Imagine a payday of £ 80m for just one boring fight. Of they are to get the less than £5m , we will see them in action more often. Ali was defending his hw titles 4 times a year and earning from $1.5 to $5m per fight back then and his fights were always a hell lot more exciting and intense than some of the drab mega bucks fights of today.

@@colinjohnpack3105 fantastic work ethic, very brave, very strong but: poor footwork, ring iq (ok he knows to tie a man up, but doesn’t go down for 8 counts when he can when he is hurt in a title fight close to the end of a round so loses for example) poor defence, poor stamina, susceptible to momentary loss of awareness if hit correctly in the chin leading to catastrophe, (the weak chin every over simplifies or defends foolishly. It’s not his fault. Some people are more susceptible to it. You can’t drain for it and no amount of bravery will help it) , doesn’t leverage his punches, using his arms to do the work a lot when he is tired. Poor strategy or limited game plan, no killer instinct. Great record though. 40 wins 38 ko , 5 losses, all to champions apart from “Tyson 2” where he loses his belt to him that time. But again he was winning against Witherspoon. Gets hit on the chin and doesn’t know where he is. Jumbo Cummings fight, first round. Watch it. You see how he literally looks like he is having a seizure as he starts to convulse. Luckily it was the last second and they get him to the corner without him falling
