In "The Nine Mile Walk," a seemingly casual breakfast conversation between a newly elected County Attorney and a sharp-witted English professor takes an unexpected turn. What begins as a simple exercise in logic and deduction soon spirals into a gripping mystery that raises more questions than answers. How can a single, innocuous sentence unravel a series of inferences leading to a startling revelation? As the professor delves deeper into his deductions, the lines between hypothetical reasoning and real-world implications blur, drawing the listener into a web of intrigue and suspense. Join us as we explore the power of language, the complexity of human reasoning, and the unexpected twists that lie hidden in plain sight.

Yes, me too. I thought it was a clever trick to get a confession out of Nicky. The idea of someone making a comment like that after murdering someone isn't very plausible in my opinion.

@@dshe8637It amuses me when people say it isn't 'plausible' for a murderer to talk or behave a certain way - when in all likelihood they have never MET a murderer and therefore do not have any insight into what they are likely to say after committing a murder!

The man doesn’t even follow his own guidelines. He falsely includes a priori factors not in the sentence such as limiting the area in which the sentence took place. The sentence speaker could have been hiking in the Grand Canyon, for example. Too many leaps in logic to be convincing and the twist was easily expected. Short stories are one of my favorite types of literature when they are tightly constructed with nothing extraneous. James Joyce does it; Bret Harte does it-but not this guy.
@leonorsantos9355
@leonorsantos9355 3 месяца назад
If you listen to it again you'll probably notice that he doesn't use the same verb at that point. It took me 3 times listening to that passage. He doesn't say those limits in place are inferences from the sentence. All he says is that sentences do not occur alone, they are always part of some frame. Then he chooses his frame. It's a choice as any other. That frame is an arbitrary choice, but the need of a frame is not.
@Wanda711
@Wanda711 3 месяца назад
Also, the point of the exercise is not to discover the truth; it's to demonstrate that he can build up a logical scenario based on the sentence which explains it fully and yet is not true. As Tony says, the irony of the story is that his fanciful conjecture IS true. So for his purposes, it doesn't really matter what the frame is; if the setting were different, he claims he could come up with an equally plausible chain of logical conclusions.

Starts too slowly for me. Two and a half minutes in, and we're nowhere near that actual plot of the story. Maybe I'm too impatient these days, but I am slogging through a history of the Ottoman Empire right now, and I have no problem sticking with that.

Thank you so much for doing this story! I read it as a teenager, and it stuck with me for decades. I finally tracked it down in an anthology of mystery stories for younger readers, of all things. There's something haunting about this little story: it slowly creates an image of an unknown man walking alone, in the dark, in the rain, and I imagine through woods, which just builds a growing sense of uneasiness.

The distinction between logic and truth was a VERY important one in my philosophy major! One of the things I love best about detective stories is that they display, as Christie would say, the facts of human nature. Inferences are something we make every day, but too often they are not taken seriously or not LOGICALLY processed!

I think maybe the protagonist overheard the phrase "nine miles" and that is what stuck with him. He then put his own spin on the phrase to give him the sentence. I could see that happening. After hearing this, I would like to try one of Kemelman's novels. Thank you so much for reading this yourself.

I don't find that difficult to believe at all. Many times I've woken up in the morning after having a very weird dream, and after wondering why I'd dream that I'd say "It must have been because we saw X in that movie last night," or some story came up on the radio. It's not something I particularly paid attention to at the time, but later on I realize my mind registered it and was thinking about it without my conscious awareness.

Person might have reason to avoid public transit. Fugitive. Penniless. Going to scene of s crime. Drinker at a bar 9 miles from home. Horse, bike, or car stolen. Must walk--even at noon--from remote farmhouse to doctors house. Supposition stacked upon superfluous surmise.
@cmm5542
@cmm5542 2 месяца назад
There's always more than one possibility in any situation. But logical analysis requires using the MOST LIKELY (not the ONLY) possibilities that lead most naturally into each other. People don't prove legal cases by actually having all the facts, but by 'supposition stacked upon superfluous surmise.'
