Naturally it's going to feel different because it's brand new. Old N64 controllers feel the way they do because your skin and oil has changed the texture of the surface, as if you spent 20 years sanding them with 4000 grit sand paper.
To a cwrtain degree, yes, but they're definitely using a different finish on their new releases including the SNES and Gamecube controllers. The originals didn't feel as rough to the touch.
@@DisneyTLK110 True, I don't doubt that the material of the controller shells have probably changed. They're probably not using the same chemicals and plastics that they would have used in the early to mid 90s.
@@cesardka Has built in rumble too, so that's nice. I'm going to try to pick one up when they come back in stock. I've heard they don't work with PCs yet, but I'm sure there's a workaround.
I really hope some of the N64 ports that we already had get updates to support the controller. Things like All Stars Mario 64, Pod Racer, and Doom 64 would be great on this.
Mario all stars did! Not sure about Doom or pod racer. But I know Turok if you change the control scheme to match the original n64 one, it is essentially identical to the classic but not running like second hand dish water!
How does the sensitivity of the joy stick compare to the original controller? I've been playing Zelda OOT on the switch n64 with Pro controller (and tried the joy cons) and the joy sticks on these are WAY too sensitive for bow and slingshot... Could you test this by trying the mini games for the upgraded quiver/bullet bag?
Im definitely getting this controller cus I do feel it will be much easier to play these games because of the button layout on the N64 controllers and what these games were built around.
@@UnclePhil1112 I got mine when it was back in stock on MyNintendo australia and that stock lasted 2 hours. I imagine it is going to be another half year to full year wait for restock again. I imagine the stock shortage is coming from the fact China is still totally locked down attempting to achieve COVID zero which isn’t really achievable :/
About the button mapping on the Switch controllers: it’s surprising that you cannot remap buttons in the N64 app…! However, for most games, I like what they did. - I find it smart that you can hold ZR to change the face buttons into C-buttons - I don’t mind the orientation swap between A and B - they remain labelled A and B, but I understand the complaints (and again: button mapping customisation!!) - the choix of placing two C-buttons on the face buttons is strange but I cannot think of a better thing to do with them (aside from not having them at all). Although I’ll say they work very well for me in Starfox 64! Bottom line: N64 button mapping isn’t straightforward to recreate on modern controllers, Nintendo has some good button mapping ideas in what they’re offering, but they have to add the option to customise them!!
I'm crying here. I want this controller so badly, but it's sold out. I want to play Star Fox 64, but it's really difficult to play with the joy cons. I'm gonna go to the corner and cry some more
I want it but it was already sold out when I got to the Nintendo’s website the day they were first available. At least I was able to get the Genesis controller.
Will you consider trying the Retro Bit Sega Genesis Controllers on the Genesis Switch Online App and importing the Japanese 6 button Genesis controllers? I'd like to find out if either of them have the special menu sound effects.
The retro bit genesis controller is fully functional except for the C button which does nothing. If you have a game that doesn't need C like sonic 2, it will work fine.
I own this controller and I absolutely love it. I use it with Mario Party Superstars, strangely enough, and it actually works and is fully usable with all of the mini games, except for Snow Whirled, which requires the X and Y buttons that the N64 doesn’t have. I have this feeling that there are maybe 1 or 2 more mini games like this, so if anyone else could reply letting me know which other mini games are unplayable with this controller, that would be very much appreciated.
I got straight took to the cleaners by Nintendo yesterday when I tried to order one. The order went through and they billed my card and 3 minutes later got an email saying the item I ordered is out of stock! Nintendo really needs to get their stuff together…
I wish Nintendo added GameCube controller support natively to n64 online bc they have the same amount of controllers, and from seeing the special press zr for the pause menu that would work as well w the GameCube controller
Too bad you can't do LeftC+RightC or TopC+BottomC since the C buttons are mapped to the right stick tilts. If the C buttons were mapped to the stick clicks, Y and X, then it is possible to input C buttons of the opposite directions.
Great video, very well spoken!! Sucks that the controller's are sold out on the Nintendo Switch Website, 😕. Fortunately got asked what I wanted for my birthday 🎂 🥳!!
I wonder if the Control Sticks are still plastic on plastic. It grinds away to dust. Making them out of polished and lubed metal (ball and bowl) is better for the longevity of these comtrollers.
still plastic on plastic. Nintendo only added some lubricant to the stick bowl as a temporary bandaid. + instead of optical potentiometers the new N64 controller uses inferior mechanical ones.
if you can sync it to a Mayflash Adapter or 8bitdo wireless adapter it might enable mapping but sacrifice the cool improvements like the easter egg sound effects in the Online Service and the N64 Icon. This is just a Theory though, I have gotten weirder things to work on the switch lol
Between this and super Mario party Nintendo has been knocking it out of the park I just hope BOTW2 turns out to be the best game ever like I think it will be
Does this work without the expansion pack? I don’t have the expansion pack but I am kinda wanting this and if it works without it then I will be completely sure
@@jackiewilliams4059 yes, but I know the Famicom controller works in the NES app and actually works with the microphone on those controller, despite it only being a Japanese thing. So maybe the apps are compatible with each other, and the Genesis one remaps the n64 buttons to act like a 6 button controller.
The fact that it doesn’t work for mario 64 3d all stars is crazy. They did an update for sunshine for GameCube adapter GameCube controllers so they better update the game for n64 controller.
Well the official GameCube controllers made for switch don’t work w classic controls either on sunshine in 3d Allstars, only the original GameCube controllers made for GameCube work (after using an adapter to connect the controller)
@@no-barknoonan1335 it uses the same controls as the pro controller sadly. I have the wireless and wired GameCube controllers made for switch by Nintendo and they both control the fluud with the individual triggers instead of the one
@@JamesTheEpicGamer I guess you must not have updated, or been mistaken about the controller being made by Nintendo, because the wired GameCube Controllers that were made for Smash Ultimate that came out with the updated adapter work perfectly in Sunshine. Nintendo has not produced any Wireless GameCube controllers since the WaveBird, they have only licensed controllers made by third parties. The reason the third party controllers don't work is because they act exactly like Pro Controllers to the Switch.
i doubt they reused the old ball mouse modules for the sticks, but given how tiny the stick center is has me worried that they used the joycon stick modules and we will soon get 64 drift
@@saklek4955 That's pretty damning to be fair. That said, I don't intend to use it very often as I would have back in the day when it was my main controller, so I'm still probably going to get one personally.
Okay yep I'm definitely going to have to get this I hate that is out of stock but I really don't have a choice but to wait... Definitely not spending over $100 on eBay lol but yeah if you're saying the control stick is just like the original that's all I need to hear!
Yeah I don’t blame you! I spent more then I should have on a controller on Ebay. Those darn scalpers buying up all of the stock. What’s a guy to do? Hopefully it arrives in one piece.
@@oscarblythe4148 I think it hasn’t been exactly 48 hours yet. RU-vid is weird with comments. I asked the question in the morning and the controller got delivered that same day
I think Y is attack button instead of B on all star version of mario 64 (as well as in a lot of other games) which makes sense considering the button placements on pro controller which is why it didnt work well with N64 controler
@OctoScoryo True, but keep in mind NSO didn't launch until a full year after the SNES mini. They haven't produced any "mini" hardware since 2017, while since then they've produced 4 different controllers just for the NSO.
No, but for $200 you can buy a console with 4 controllers on eBay or elsewhere, then start buying or finding games, and you'll have them forever on real hardware, you can't beat that.
The controller used on the SNES Classic Mini existed prior to the mini console itself. They basically just re-used the one they made for the original Wii.
@@Reckoner89 This is true, but also kind of irrelevant. It's the fact tha Nintendo's current strategy for leveraging their older games is to use them very sparingly to prop up the NSO. Their strategy for leveraging these games has changed since they made the NES and SNES mini.
_If_ Nintendo will update the N64 NSO controllers to be able to have their buttons remappable, I'd prefer the ability, across all NSO controllers, to map any button on them, to any button that the main Pro Controller has (so for example, mapping X and Y to the N64 controller; Since punching is mapped to Y in SM3DAS, it would absolutely be required that these controllers would need universal button mapping).
@@lightning13clair29 or they can just add button mapping so you can adapt to bad button layout if you want and I can change the layout to something thats more comfortable for myself. dont worry nintendo has down this before for the wii u so its possible
@@prl4122 or you can just use the n64 controller and adjust to the new control layout or dont buy the expansion pack just because button maping is possible doesnt mean there gonna change it maybe they will and maybe they wont
yeah it's always nice if we're given more options rather than limited option, button remap should have been a thing especially when it's their own official controller if it's a 3rd party I can see why
@@lightning13clair29 The problem in 3D All Stars is LITERALLY that there is no way to punch or dive in Mario 64, because default controls are X & Y are Punch. The N64 Controller doesn't have X and Y, therefore, you can only jump - rendering the game unplayable since you can't grab Bowser. Stop being the contrarian just because you think people are crapping on this - it's an actual flaw.
@@retrojohnny1899 You think that’s gross, they still charge $7 shipping regardless of your total. As in there’s no free shipping for purchases over “#”
I’ve been using mine for a week now and I absolutely love it! Even with my huge hands this was always my favorite design ever. I’ve always taken care of my controllers, Especially the sticks so the by the time it actually does wear down i can just get another. As someone who appreciates vibration in games the Rumble is EXTREMELY satisfying. Only problems is their is no X and Y buttons needed for some switch games so it’s not recommended for all of them, but I use this controller strictly for Smash Ultimate and it works perfect! (They also could have Squeezed ZL on the other side but it doesn’t matter)
The N64 has one of the best dpads ever made (up there with the GBA SP and Xbone) and it works exceptionally well for the few games that use it, and yet Nintendo somehow can't replicate a good dpad to save their life.
It has been confirmed that the Joystick still uses the same mechanics as the original. If you're looking for a controller that will have longevity, this is not it.
My 2 n64 controllers I have for my og n64 still work very well too and it’s been years don’t press the buttons or stick too hard or rotate too fast take care of your stuff
@@qactustick I know. I just normally stick to the brand accessories made for the system, or in this case, closest to the emulation. That aside, I imagine it could work like arcade configuration? Got 1 analog or the directional pad, the main buttons on the right are set up arcade-like, anyway.
Personally, I'll be looking forward to using this on my PC to play games that it wasn't designed for, such as Daytona USA, Goldeneye Source, and many others.
