Master the fundamentals. Right now I’m going through I’ll Remember April and writing out 2 handed comping voicings in 12 keys. Everyday I practice 2-3 keys slowly and eventually start playing in time. Reharmonizaiton is still too advanced for many, and it’s much better to have total control of the most common voicings/progressions. Then you can get really creative once the control is there.

Wow! Such a small mind shift makes all the difference. Shifting fewest notes (voice leading) between chords has never been easier. Instead of thinking in numbers, I just “see” the note pool and shift to the closest scale degree of the new chord. Easy peasy! Again, I’ll say “Brilliant!”. Think I need to take a closer look at your course offering LOL! 😎🙏

Hi Noah. This is EXACTLY what I have been doing lately, getting different shapes, also shifting the bass note down mainly, but up as well, whilst keeping the melody note CONSTANT (in reference to your other brilliant videos on this exercise which is my favourite, and I think is also key to freedom all over the keyboard, and more importantly, trying to figure out what scale the chord comes from. Thank you for this.

Sometimes when I am using this approach I made mistakes and actually I end up liking the sound 😁 This is a dope approach than following a strict theory. Especially in song writing. Because mistakes might end up being happy accidents.

Great video Noah! I'm wondering how one could use this voicing method for composing?
@NoahKellman
@NoahKellman 3 месяца назад
Hey! Well when you are composing depending on what instruments you are writing for, this technique could help you find really great voice leading for arranging. Might also be a fun way to discover which courts to move to in a progression.

Hi Noah. I'm a vision impaired piano player. Thanks for posting this awesome video. This video for me poses a couple of questions. First, are there certain scale combinations that work or does any scale shape fit with any scale shape? Dorian, then Lidian but could someone try Dorian and then another scale type? Also can this be done with modes within a scale such as c major where one would start on d and travel up the keyboard to the d an octave higher?
@NoahKellman
@NoahKellman 4 месяца назад
Hey Marshall, my pleasure! Really glad that you found the video helpful. I would say just generally speaking, this concept applies to any scale. A scale just being a specific collection of notes, the concept here is really just to practice shifting the notes in your cordfrom one scale to the other. Any scale, from any family of modes can work!

So I need to learn the scales finally? Argh! :D
@tomsPrivateVids
@tomsPrivateVids 2 месяца назад
You don’t need to practice running up and down the scales. Just learn to visualize the pattern each scale makes. Lay your hands on the keyboard, leave them in one place and practice shifting your fingers into different keys. The addition of a base note will then define the mode within that scale.

@@j.stribling2565 it’s called Chordie. Great app but it’s true that it’s not ideal with some of the spellings. That said I don’t have time to write everything out, but I actually do have a friend who is developing a pretty smart algorithm that I think will solve this issue in many cases.
