On Saturday I gave a demonstration with Dutch Paralympic dressage rider Rixt van der Horst and her horse Unique.
As you can see in the demonstration, we're building the bridge between the groundwork and the riding.

It must feel terrific to ride a big magnificent horse when one’s legs aren’t working up to par. I have learned so much from watching Tristan. I have a high strung, sensitive young Paint gelding that these relaxation exercises have worked so well with.

how is your horse doing now?

@@TheOldandslow we’ve come a long way! I’m just starting to ride him, which for me is a big milestone cuz he’s been so challenging. I’ve done tons of groundwork and enjoy it. I will probably always do as much on the ground as in the saddle. I’m a backyard horse owner not interested in showing. I ride in a western saddle and hope to trail ride someday. I’m 66 and going slow and safe with my young steed. How about you?

@@icegirl2246 thank you, that feels good to hear. I don’t get much feedback. I’m still not riding yet. Right now I’m ‘riding’ him with a hand on his back, walking at his side and using the reins to steer. He got to get over his claustrophobia of having me so close to him so when I get on his back it’s a smooth transition. I fell off him a couple years ago, when he spooked out from under me. I fell hard and had a painful healing for months. I need him way more trusting and willing to try what I ask so my chances of staying safe are way greater than not. Or else I won’t ride him. He’s magnificent and a joy, albeit a challenge, to work with. A dashing black steed.

Tearing up Tristan is the best thing that has happened to the riding community. His system is the best money I have ever spent on a horse 💕

@13:00 That clucking at the horse for everything under the sun drives me craaaaaaazzzzzzyyyyyyy. Why do people cluck at their horse to go faster when they want him to pick up his head for the bridle or pick up a hoof to clean? Stupid. lol

The training philosophy is good stuff but to present the rider as being para is stretching the concept. She can stand and walk unassisted, as for strength, it is not a matter of strength even for athletes but a question of balance and technique. When I compared her to my own situation I was comparing her who could walk with myself who can’t and needs a lift to mount. The fact still remains that I am riding at the high school level despite this. This is why I don’t have any interest in para-competition. You can cheat by overstating your disability. These are not personal comments directed at this young lady, they are a general statement of how things are. This presentation is a little bit more than disingenuous
@syzygyfarm
@syzygyfarm 5 лет назад
Hardly disingenuous. She is a paralympic rider. Not all disabilities are the same, I'll grant you that, but there are different difficulties for able riders, as well. We are all different and we all have our own excuses to make. Clearly, his point is to help us each get past that.
@lucasa1849
@lucasa1849 4 года назад
There are different levels in para-riding based on how bad the disability is. I think there’s 1 to 5. So a very disabled person won’t be up against a slightly disabled person.
@danielthomas3333
@danielthomas3333 5 лет назад
Her disability is very mild, compared to mine, she is hardly disabled at all.
@GotABrokenHeart
@GotABrokenHeart 5 лет назад
So basically you're demeaning her disability just because her's is different than yours? You don't know how her disability affects her, you don't know her side of the story. My advice, shut up and quit judging people by how their disability LOOKS to you. :)
@danielthomas3333
@danielthomas3333 5 лет назад
Olivia Rogerson: Her disability is minor, trust me. I know what disability is. You don’t know what my disability is so how can you be so rude. Mind your own knitting
@GotABrokenHeart
@GotABrokenHeart 5 лет назад
@@danielthomas3333 I didn't say you didn't know what one was, and I never claimed to know yours. I'm just pointing out the fact that judging other people's disabilities is rude, which clearly you don't understand. Wether or not yours is bad, doesn't mean you can demean hers and say its minor. No ones disability is minor, at least not to them. You don't know how it may affect her mentally, therefore you have no right to say whose is worse. I don't need to know what your disability is to know that it's rude to assume that someone else's is minor. To some people, their seemingly "minor" disability consumes their whole lives.

I have GAD and major depressive disorder. Just because I don’t have suicidal thoughts like my friend doesn’t mean it doesn’t feel as bad. It is not fair to compare people’s (dis)abilities. Everyone carries their own luggage, and no observer can judge how heavy that feels. The key is most of the time you can’t even see the pain (physical or mental). I am so sorry that you have such a huge burden, and I can’t even imagine how you must feel. I hope you are doing well. Sending strength to you! Let’s all be supportive of each other❤️

Disability is disability. I have 3 herniated discs in my back and find caring for my horses a massive challenge let alone riding them. Yes I count mount unassisted but dealing with the chronic pain is next level. Everyone is different. Don’t think we can judge really.
