In the U.S., from what I've heard, it's really hard to dive into dumpsters at grocery stores and take the food out. Cops come and tell people to leave because the "garbage" is owned by the stores. Owners of the stores get mad, then dumpsters get locked up tight so no one can get into them. It's so infuriating that perfectly edible food is just thrown away (and locked up!) while hundreds of thousands of people are starving and can't afford to buy food! Those stores care about making a profit, not helping the needy. They make no money if starving people go into their dumpsters and take out the food that they threw away. It's a shame...

Skye ID It's true only for some businesses, I live in Tulsa oklahoma and I know lots of businesses that give away the extra food to who ever will come pick it up, like donut shops etc, many will leave the extras in closed boxes and set it on top of the dumpster so anyone can grab it and it doesn't get contaminated by the actual trash, and when I lived back in Missouri, Panera bread used to give away all the bread that wasn't sold each day.

I camped for over a year on my own (at the time) 38 acres. I can tell you with some authority that when you're providing your own heat, food, water, shelter, etc., there's very little free time. What there is you spend resting. After over a year, the County finally found me & informed me that the longest one can camp legally---EVEN ON YOUR OWN ISOLATED LAND---is two weeks. That's true pretty much throughout all of the USA. I fought it, but lost.

He does actually address this really thoroughly in his Moneyless Manifesto book. As of 2019 he is truly off grid, he is totally sincere in his mission. I think this stage of his journey is important in learning how wasteful the current system is, that a person can live off it for over a year without spending any money. That's a radical observation.

I applaud this gent. However, since everything is Energy it doesn't matter if one spends their energy dumpster diving for food or working their 9 to 5 job. Glenda relli you really would be wise to change the word "truth" to "perception" because that is what it is. Using the word "Truth" is making a claim of it being more than it actually is, a righteous, pedestal like state (verging on sounding pompous, pretentious even) that is arguable and ultimately disprovable through debate where as perception is subjective, personal to you and undeniable.

This guy lives like the hunter-gatherers, the state in which humans lived and evolved for hundreds and thousands of years. Only 10.000 years ago with the introduction of agriculture, was when we began our separation from our natural state. We are not genetically prone to live in this Money ruled society. We are prone to be living in a harmonious world where sensation and feelings comes first, not in this hostile world where anxiety driven thought rues our precious time on this earth.

{I've been out here without money in the USA for about 12 years.} Life is so much easier... I actually can enjoy my life, instead of living it in the pursuit of things and the money to buy them with. The thing that keeps me from wanting unnecessary things? Knowing that someone is going to have to give their life and joy to make them.
@LiaMari
@LiaMari 10 лет назад
Sure, best way is Facebook, facebook.com/AllOne1111 I live in a camper, mostly I've been living on people's land, trading labor and other things instead of rent. for over 20 years, I've only had clothing that is given to me, by friends throwing things away, or "Free piles". I only eat what I am offered, or need to eat, "Opportun-avore". It's only been about 5 years almost completely moneyless, when I gave up dragging my camper around, and driving. I just really stop and think about whether or not I actually need something, or if I just want it. You are correct, most things people think they need, they really only want. {Like electricity, running water, haircuts, phones, candy... haha I heat with wood, which is free if you are willing to work. The thing is, living free takes a lot of time, either making clothes or repairing used, chop wood, carry water, finding things, and labor in trade. For a few years I traveled with just my tent, while my camper has set put in Vermont... Sometimes, I live with friends, trading work for rent, food, clothes, rides. I've actually managed to travel quite a bit, even made it to Israel last winter! People send plane tickets when they want to see my badly enough. Usually, I get the last of someone's shampoo, or the kind they bought and didn't like, the bottom of their toothpaste, table scraps. Internet is free, and internet phone service does me just fine. Right now I am so fortunate, I am living on my sister's land, trading with her for what little electric I use {computer and a light bulb} the internet wi-fi reaches where I am parked on her land... I eat the leftovers they used to give to the dogs... forage, now, everyone's gardens are coming in, being a vegetarian, I'm living it up. I make most of the things I need, I used to be a construction contractor, so I am pretty handy. Barter is better I've found. I do get money on occasion, either an odd job, or I'm pretty good at finding it on the ground too! I think, this last year, I made about $500. It's key to stay healthy, to barter work, and to keep from needing medical expenses. When the fruits and berries are in season, I get right on it! LOL It's amazing how much food is growing out in the yard or woods. I look forward to talking more! I'd love to hear your stories!

@SpiritualShow Thank you for seeing my point. While others have pointed out that food can be obtained from other sources or bartered for, I can't help but wonder how those who have nothing to barter with, or the usable skills to trade labor for food, would do if there were no waste products for them to latch onto. It's beyond sad that people live this way. In Marks case it's a choice, an experiment. For countless others, it's their only option. It maybe wasted food but it's their survival.

I do have a question though: if the stores didn't dump food in the skips for him and others to take, wouldn't he have a hard time getting by, especially in winter? There are homeless people out there that need that food - while society is messed up and he objects to the waste, it's the waste that is helping him and others survive. One coin, two sides.

He doesn't live like a hunter/gatherer like some of the comments say.... this lifestyle is only possible BECAUSE so many people and companies throw things away that are still well edible and usable. If, let's say, 20% of the population lived like him and the rest would be more eco conscious and would throw away less, survival of those 20% would be much harder.
@Brachwah
@Brachwah 10 лет назад
Wrong. If more people lived like him and less people were in the factories then it would be EASIER to survive without money. There would be more land to hunt on, more fish to fish. There wouldn't be as many restrictions. As is now, he probably has to scavenge for food because he is legally unable to hunt.
@SalomeSchmidt
@SalomeSchmidt 10 лет назад
Evan Brown Only if more people lived vegan as well. Land on the earth is limited as such - especially fertile land. We could only live of it if almost no meat was consumed anymore. Otherwise it wouldn't be enough and instead of stepping on anothers toes hunting wild pigs, we would probably very quickly start keeping and feeding house pigs again. And, Evan, only very few people actually work "in factories" nowadays in Europe. Those who work in an area that does not have an immediate outcome/product that can be changed towards other goods or food (such as teachers, doctors, translators) need to eat and live somewhere as well. Hence, after the abolishon of money, we would probably very quickly come up with some exchange currency/tool for such services again. And .... whhhush.... money would be back in the game, just with a different name.
@Brachwah
@Brachwah 10 лет назад
SalomeSchmidt By factories I was mostly generalizing and meant any modern day job, but I see what you are saying. Our population is too high for us all to live as simply as I wish that we could live. But I think we are at a point in our self-awareness as humans to do something different, especially with our technology. I think that we could feed the world and satisfy every other needs that we have as humans without money or inequality. We have the technology to do so, just not the right motive. Borders, money, politics, etc are restricting us from thriving and helping the earth thrive too.
@havfaith56

SalomeSchmidt we can feed people using Permaculture methods. We can't using traditional farming methods. Chickens and rabbits eat grass. Their waste is important fertilizers for the soil web. We can't raise cows on corn. They don't even do well on corn. They need grasss. Read up on Permaculture. Lawns need to go, they should be growing food.

he is not a "bum" in my eyes, he is actually a bum. The only difference between him and all the other bums I see, is that he is not a beggar. If noone threw anything away anymore, he would starve, have no clothes, get no books etc. You have too look at what is sustainable for everyone. If you want to live a "money-less" life, you have to be a farmer in order to survive. Then you will live till you get very sick, and you will die unless you get free medical treatment/medicine.

+Deona Eddy No Deona, the point of many involved in the movement is that rather than tossing it in the bin, we should be sending it on to pantries, soup kitchens, etc. or selling it at discounts, just as we should be with "ugly" food. The expiration date system is extremely faulty and leading to excessive food waste. There was a good TED talk on it by Tristam Stuart that really clarified the issue of food waste in most developed countries. One of my students sent it to me when she was doing a speech on minimalism, and it was somewhat shocking.

I know he's out to prove a good point, but he lives on a nice big piece of land, he has wifi (free dongle?) and I'm quite sure if he gets appendicitis he will be down at his (tax payer funded) local A+E pretty quick. So it's more about living on someone elses money than being 'a no money man'

If everyone did this, there will be no soldiers, no country, no tax, no corruption as well.

it's my goal to start producing 25% of my own food from a garden along with chickens and bees. I would also like goats and pigs, but I don't think I could slaughter them myself unless I was a week from dying of starvation. But the point is if I was even making a quarter of my food at home I would feel better and more secure.

With regards to the waste, Sadly my local shop does the same. They bin everything cooked that day that could essentially last a few more. I'm not suggesting they keep selling them item's but they could give it away. 👍 We are headed towards a cashless society anyway. Mark is ahead of the game but the area he lives could be tidied up and made to look more comfortable. I'd personally use the sun newspaper 🗞 to wipe my bum with. ✌️

Interesting video. Getting "off the grid" and away from the big corporation dominance is a dream of many. Mark does a good job doing that, but one of the big things I didn't hear answered is the property he squats on. While it is fine since he is reasonably well setup with a little stream nearby and lots of land to do farming on... I am wondering why he is not getting chased away constantly by the land owner. Also, I wonder what he trades for his internet connection and cellphone.

I like his bold example and I think its an extreme effort in response to an extremely dysfunctional economic system.

Back in 1986 I worked in a place where we had to rip up used shirts and trousers before throwing them away. I was 16 at the time and didn't give a frig, but now looking back I see what a waste.

Mark looks cool for being so alternative and idealistic, however we all get old, and most of us want to live longer, so what is Mark going to do when he needs medicines and/or an operation? In my opinion, Mark's lifestyle is either unrealistic or ok for those who like to live like in the stone age and do not mind dying earlier because of lack of healthcare assistance and all the conveniences that technology and science gave us despite some failures.

There are several problems, one is Mark your relying on the flocked up worlds leftovers. No world no leftovers, no caravan. Still a fair cop on the try & keep going Mark. Remember to plant your 22 heritage trees where they shouldn't move. Wait I planted 700 so you can count 22 as your carbon sink :). Tossdart

I have never deliberately gone 'dumpster diving' for food, not that I am against it, however I will gather any usable items that have been discarded for landfill which means saving resources and spend less money and extra items I find but do not need for myself I will sell and use the cash for things I do need. More people should do this, we are so wasteful in this consumerist world. Every bit helps even if you don't live 'off grid' and totally free of money.

It's all in the eye of the beholder.. it doesnt matter what he is. If noone threw away stuff anymore we would probably be in a better society and hence the need to escape the system he does right now wouldnt be necessary (ofc that depend on what state the new system is)

how does he get free internet? it says in another documentation he did not pay a cent for 15 months. Paying the internet plan upfront for 2 years should not count! ;D

A comment from someone I won't name: "Now that he's on the news his book will sell like crazy. How long will he be living in the trailer and eating thrown out food then?" A bit snotty but it's a touch truthful: he won't be the "No Money Man" then. My guess is that he'll throw the bulk of the money into charity or set up a program to feed the homeless. He seems the type to do that.

I liked the idea 'til he put out something on Facebook saying he and Fergus and others are holding a workshop about moneyless living - but the workshop costs like £800! I've tried getting an answer from these guys about how they can possibly do this. Why aren't they just holding it in a free outdoor space? No responses, apart from some inane blathering to get around the fundamental question. Just makes it seem like they don't actually believe in the idea. Disenchanted with Mark Boyle. Shame.
