Before modern cleaners I often used petrol as an engine cleaner. Works great but stings like hell if you've any cuts! My budget never stretched to gloves. Informative vid.

by the way if the barrel is tighter in the middle could be honing technique . as it spends more time at the end of the bore and less in the middle .... if thats any help
The engines I've dismantled its often the case that someone has been inside but not replaced everything as it should be ... I just describe it as a bodge up
I used to ,but you never know the full story , these days I look at it as a mystery and also a learning curve. I started doing my own rebuilds as I found it was the only way to guarantee the parts you bought were put into your engine.
