He most likely also plays these roles because he can relate to being affected by the beauty standard and is trying to send the message that his and other people's visuals aren't everything.

It is said that Eunwoo was offered the main lead in Nevertheless, but rejected it due to the toxicity of the role.. since he has many young fans who fantasise him....he is going to play a young math teacher in his next drama, going by the webtoon, it's also a very positive role indeed.

Honestly as a European and somewhat of a feminist: to this day I still don't get how the guy in Nevertheless is supposed to be toxic? Sure they have communication problems, sure irl if you want a stable relationship you probably shouldn't go to guyblike him bit that's why it's a fairy tale. And she was honestly more toxic than him. Yes, I said it, sue me.

In one of the episodes of Master In The House, they were given different scenarios to style the models they were partnered with. Eunwoo's scenario was a single woman attending a gathering of her friends who are in a relationship. He styled her in a power suit saying that she is single but is successful in her career and is happy with being single, that this woman is not envious of being in a relationship.

100% agree with this! I think Eunwoo has made many smart choices with his dramas that showcase progressive ideas (unfortunately not common in today's Korean society). He hasn't gotten a whole lot of credit for his choices because people focus on the "tsundere" stereotype/typecasting, but it has paid long-term dividends in terms of his image and fame, I think. ETA: You're also entirely right that celebrating men for not being toxic when women are derided for being feminist is in and of itself a product of misogyny, but I think the thing we as women can do is ensure that we lift other women up and protect them when they are the target of defamation. Simply refusing to praise a man doesn't do anything to help women either, haha, so I support this video!
@kdramaresearchinstitute
@kdramaresearchinstitute Год назад
Yes, absolutely! I have a suspicion that people who say that he always plays tsundere characters haven't actually watched any of his k-dramas till the end. And this typecasting only applies to 2 of his k-dramas anyway, it's not that many. Tons of actors play the same type of role over and over again.

I also noticed that people usually would downgrade good-looking people despite anything they worked hard for. Just like what you said that people tend to only look at his face and not what he says. I'm pretty sure all the dramas he was in all this time is popular because of how good he (and the other actors) deliever the messages. He is so open to new ideas and always so hungry for knowledges, even he always emphasizing on the characters traits and not the external sides of the dramas. If it makes you feel any better, Suho was severely butchered as a character in the drama. He is far less problematic in the WEBTOON the show is based on. It was one of the bigger issues I had with the adaptation, if not the biggest issue. Eun Woo knew about the character before he said yes to the role, and how Suho is portrayed in the WEBTOON was probably a part of his deciding factor for taking the role.

Namjoon not getting backlash and irene getting backlash isnt a double standard . Its mysoginy . irene was getting backlash from her sexist male fans , while she got support by feminist female fans . Namjoon was getting support by his feminist female fans , and hate by sexist ones . The difference in the amount of hate is because RV has a bigger male fandom compared to BTS which is majority female cz its a boy group. These two cases shouldnt be comparable cz its not the same type of people have 2 different reactions to the same thing . Its 2 types of people having different reactions to the same thing .

That was an interesting analysis, it gave me a new perspective on Cha Eun Woo. However, I disagree with the notion that roles reveal a lot about actors since there are many factors that determine what roles actors are able to secure. It is easy for actors to become typecatted and therefore end up playing the same characters or having their choices narrowed down by their appearance. These are just two examples. It would be premature to make that assumption unless the actor has explicitly expressed those sentiments/behaviors outside of their roles.
@kdramaresearchinstitute
@kdramaresearchinstitute Год назад
Yeah, I agree, the roles are fictional and the job of an actor is literally to pretend to be someone else. I don't think he plays himself in these k-dramas. There are lots of examples of actors who are super sweet in real life but play the most vicious villains. But at the level of fame that Eunwoo has, he definitely gets to choose his roles and gets a lot of screenplays to pick from. It it pure speculation though, we can't actually know what his personal beliefs are, so yes, you are absolutely correct :)

@@kdramaresearchinstitute For the first 2 roles he has gotten he was not in the level of fame yet to reject roles especially main lead roles that idol actors would kill to have. Your analysis is pretty spot on. I also realised that Eunwoo chooses to play characters with strong feminist ideals. He was particularly endearing as soft-natured Dowon. His character in My ID is Gangnam Beauty was really good. I was always pleased when Do Kyung-seok would call people out on their behaviour. He was a compelling character. I want to add that his character in Top Management was also brilliant. Thought that was not a feminist drama, his character was quite gentle with the female lead, knew his boundaries and kept to them, and definitely never made the woman uncomfortable. It was definitely refreshing to watch. [Though if we were to talk about the most progressive characters in kdrama, I think Park Saeroyi has got everyone beat.] I did think that Eunwoo's acting was not the best in the earlier works, but its definitely improved loads now. I bet his upcoming works would be even more amazing.

I haven't really seen any of his kdramas before, now i want to check out a few of them, they sound interesting. I don't know if you can define someone for the roles they play, it could happen that people choose to play the bad guy because there aren't many roles available for them, however, when they are pretty popular and consistently choose to play the misogynist that is portrayed as a hero (kinda like Lee Min-Ho), there is a problem that one you see you can't unsee. People are talking about this, but not really when it's about k-dramas, i'm glad you made this video :)
@kdramaresearchinstitute
@kdramaresearchinstitute Год назад
There are plenty of examples of actors who play the worst villains, but are the sweetest people in real life. The job of an an actor is to pretend to be someone else, so we can't assume that people choose these roles because they agree with a fictional villain. But Cha Eunwoo often talks about how people never take him seriously because he is handsome and that he wishes people would pay attention to what he does instead. And coincidentally the k-dramas where he is the male lead are exactly about this topic, so there must be something he saw in these scripts that made him choose it

Thank you for this video! I first saw Cha Eun Woo in Rookie Historian and was captivated by his portrayal of the gentle, honest, and brave prince. His acting was wonderful, and I couldn't understand why anyone would criticize it. The part seemed to be written for him. I think some people were not only just focused on his face but perhaps were also uncomfortable with the role reversal between him and female lead. Maybe they didn't appreciate his ability to be vulnerable and express an array of emotions. That's simply excellent acting. Not only that, there seemed to be no other character quite like this one in k-dramas I'd seen, so perhaps people weren't used to it. I think he's a trailblazer when it comes to male roles in k-dramas.

I do disagree with the "do not praise men for being feminist allies" i think we should praise both women and men, because how the human reward system. More men will become feminist allies if they get a small "reward" - in the form of praise. It's not exclusive to men, if we give women praise for being feminists there will also be more female feminists.

That's a good point, I see what you mean. I think the "don't praise men for the bare minimum" should apply to situations where people do the bare minimum that should be the standard: for example if a man doesn't catcall or doesn't say derogatory things about women, then it should not be treated as an achievement, that's just what a normal adult does. If someone makes an active effort to make the world better then we should be appreciating it :) But it should apply to women as well - very often we praise men for saying women deserve human rights, but criticize women for doing the same. Men should want to be feminist allies because this is the right thing to do and not because it might get them a small reward!

After being used to men treating women like crap, seeing the rare man who is actually a cool person is refreshing and gladdening. I just wish more men weren’t neanderthals so the bare minimum was the standard. I honestly prefer the feminism presented in kdramas because I relate to it more; I am a girly girl who is bubbly but isn’t the type to fight or swear at people. In Western media, I always felt like I was not being a woman correctly since confident women were shown to be tomboyish, swear a lot or are serious. Kdramas made me feel comforted because it showed me that I do not have to give up my cute outfits, make up and perfume to be a feminist. Great analysis! I should look into one of his shows

Irene was criticized by men and women alike. So I would have to disagree here. It seems more like Namjoon has the general audience's respect, and Irene struggles with keeping it.

13:24 just want to say that people really forget that he (namjoon) was only praised by his female fans & international fans his name was still all over the anti feminists websites in SK plus red velvet & ig most girl groups have predominantly male fans in their fanbases & vice versa for male groups so mostly men hating on irene & women praising nj makes 'sense' ik ofcourse there are double standard but i feel like this example is just not right considering those two have different audiences & it does not consider other factors here but i really like your channel & analysis!

I appreciate this video analysis of Eunwoo's acting because while he struggles with gripping the audience with his facial expressions, I do think he is a smart person in being able to pick dramas that would best represent him. Cause yes him being handsome has a lot to do with him being casted; but it also has to do with Eunwoo connecting with the character. Actors don't pick roles unless they love their character. Cause they cannot act a character well if they hate them. They can't hate themselves lol.

What a great video! I'd just like to say that as much as I agree that being a non-toxic person should be the bare minimum, I disagree with your point about not giving positive feedback where it is deserved. Being praised like an icon is a little too much for not being an assh*le, but we absolutely _should_ give men positive responses for doing good, because they are taught not to. They have to unlearn the toxicity that they have been taught, just like we have to learn things like being confident and that we as women are strong and capable. If we praise women for being trailblazers and iconic, then the men who contribute to women being able to shine and get the recognition they deserve, should also be given deserved praise, so more men are incentivized to make a change. What is obvious for me as a woman, might not be so obvious to a random straight man, and if I want to see change in the world, I have to be understanding of that. Yes, it is unfair, but no change has come about by people sitting around calling everything unfair, but not actively contributing towards making it happen.
@kdramaresearchinstitute
@kdramaresearchinstitute Год назад

True Beauty was the first kdrama I watched with Eun Woo and I was a hardcore Seo Jun lover .... TBH I truly fell for him outside of his face. I love how approachable and kind he is. He is someone that I know I would just click with as we are very similar in preferences and ideology. It also helps we're around the same age (he's a bit younger than me). My husband refers to him as my idol bestie. Edit: I honestly loved his character in My ID.

That would be terrific, if these were not "characters" of films. I'm certain Eun Woo is divine and a kind hearted individual. But these are roles he has played, not a depiction of his personal views. It is the creation of the producers of the series. Fortunately, he's selected for these roles, which suit his gentle demeanor well.
@kdramaresearchinstitute
@kdramaresearchinstitute Год назад
That is a very good point and I agree that these are fictional characters and not him playing himself, so yes you are correct! I have been thinking about this ever since I made this video and still haven't made up my mind about this. This is an analysis of common themes in the roles Eunwoo chooses. Because I don't know him as a person I can't know what he really thinks privately, so these are just assumptions. I think there is a clear pattern of him choosing roles in feminist k-dramas though and if an actress always played a feminist I would assume she cares about these topics. There must be something in these scripts that he chooses that he finds compelling :)
@jackiecalle6757
@jackiecalle6757 Год назад
That’s very kind and humble of you to say. It shows you are a positive, caring soul that looks for the best in people. I also have been thinking that if he did not find these rules to be appropriate, he would decline the projects. It’s something like park, bo gum in the roles that he has landed. They portray him mostly as innocent, hard-working, and kind.
@kdramaresearchinstitute
@kdramaresearchinstitute Год назад
@@jackiecalle6757 No, you're a kind humble an positive soul! Haha. I was actually wondering when someone would point out that these roles likely don't mean that he 100% agrees with everything his characters do. I was hoping for nuanced discourse and interesting discussions about k-dramas when I started this channel, so thank you for commenting in a critical and well thought out way! Eunwo possibly being a feminist or maybe not is pretty innocent, this argument becomes weirder depending on which actors it is applied to. Lee Joonki always plays morally grey characters, Lee Minho always plays toxic arrogant guys, Park Minyoung always plays a woman who starts dating at work, Seo Yeji always plays very dark roles, I would not be as confident of accusing them of identifying with these traits as I am with Eunwoo...
@jackiecalle6757
@jackiecalle6757 Год назад
@@kdramaresearchinstitute Thank You for your kind words. You made me realize the chances that these actors take in staking their "reputations" for the possibility of scoring "specific roles" in these series' -- And I totally agree that what attracted me initially to the Goody Goody Boys like Park Bo Gum / Cha Eun Woo / Kim Seon Ho in the first place, was the gentleness/kindness displayed in their various acting roles. But nothing cemented my "image" of them until I saw the respectful way they interacted with other actors, production crew and their fans when they were "off-camera." --- Yes, there is some scandal with Seon Ho's personal life, and there will be other scandals over time, because media loves gossip. But I think these guys' essence will remain unchanged. Either way, I prefer to support the polite, kind, considerate, non-diva actor (and actress). And I simply identify more with artists like Eun Woo than the "bad boys." Haa! Thank you Mr. Cha, Mr. Park and Mr. Kim for keeping yourselves humble and kind! Gamsamnida!!! P.S. I do realize that once these guys pass their mid 30s, the "school-boy romance" roles will no longer fit. And they will be casted for more mature roles, some more serious and some maybe a bit rough. Hopefully, they'll still be able to select from those, the roles that are best suited to the "image" they want to continue to project. And hopefully their agencies will go to bat for them to achieve their clients' image goals, instead of pressuring them to go into other directions.

we can both critisize an actor's skill while simulaneously applaud him for his choice of roles. honestly, i don't like him as an actor or as a face, but i am happy he's so popular and uses it to play these positive roles that his millions of teen girl fans watch. when such a famous actor chooses roles where the women beside him shine, that overrides discussion about his acting ability. i would like to than his managers for giving him great scripts

Todos sus personajes además, entregan una visión interesante respecto al género femenino. Siempre respetando sus identidades y diferecias y alentando a mejorar. I like the idea of roles he plays,but sadly I wish he`d work more on actually being a good actor. I like his personality(or what is shown to us as his personality,remember,media training is very real),but that doesn`t negate the fact he`s not a very good actor yet,relying on his appearance to book roles instead. Agree wholeheartedly about the double standards,but I`d like to mention that politicians(South Korea included) don`t really,for example,make their subordinates read a book so that they`ll learn something. More often than not,it`s a way for them to look good,be seen as an ally,whilst most of them in reality have a very incel approach to feminism and problems women face.

I feel like it is circular - he gets cast in a role because of his looks and it's a role that is not super challenging, so he gets cast again in something similar because he hasn't played something challenging yet and so on and so on. He is no Yeo Jin Goo in terms of acting skills, but he is definitely getting there, I hope to see him in more complex roles that break away from the "cold rich boyfriend" archetype, where he can learn and showcase more :)
