In 1990, The North Face sent an international team of explorers on the first dogsled crossing of Antarctica-an extraordinary feat across 3,741 unforgiving miles. Their mission was to draw global attention to the continent’s endangered environment and reinstate the Antarctic Treaty. Will Steger, a team member of the Trans-Antarctica Expedition, recounts the experience, its significance, and what exploration means to him in Peace of History.

Love the history of North Face as well as Patagonia. Everyone here now needs to go watch 180 Degrees South.

Why was the Chinese flag omitted in the new design of the jacket? It feels like Dr. Qin Dahe's massive contributions to this expedition should not be overlooked and forgotten just to add in a logo to the matrix of six flags...

Hi Will - We agree, Dr. Qin Dahe’s contributions were hugely important. Unfortunately, due to Article 10 of the Law of the People's Republic Of China we are not able to feature the Chinese flag on articles of clothing.

@@antn8387 you're right though because if you look at the previous Japanese re-release of TNF Trans Antarctica jackets the flags are all in intact. I think it might be more US political than anything else.

@TheNorthFace I am looking into picking up a TNF TAE Parka. How does it compare to parkas like the McMurdo?

Great respect for these explorers, but a great example of marketing again

This was a truly great expedition, the likes of which we will never see again. Will's words on exploration ring true for me, too, as they are simple and genuine. However, a couple of points: firstly, there was no need to 'reinstate' the Antarctic Treaty. It had never stopped, ended or been taken away and coming up 'for review' by no means indicates any end. And secondly, related to the first point, by 1990 the AT nations had already decided to stop negotiating a convention to the Treaty that would allow mining and had started forming what would become the Madrid Protocol. This started really in 1988-89, initiated by Jacques Cousteau's influence on French politics and the Prime Minister. The Australian government joined the French in pulling out of those mining/drilling negotiations (CRAMRA) and from then, in 1989, the whole thing had to be redirected into a more environmentally friendly policy direction. This expedition was certainly one factor in many things going on at that time (eg. the Exxon Valdez oil spill) but I think its influence is overstated here.

Makes no sense. The USSR participated in this event. Not the Russian Federation. So why is TNF crediting the RF with it? Isn’t one of the key points of this expedition and its historical value the fact that it united 6 nations, including a couple that don’t usually play nice with the West? Yet both of those nations have been erased from the current commemorative product, and all the marketing materials focus on the four western/white participants? The extent of TNF’s historical revisionism in this case is honestly staggering…. Just outrageous.
