From the Super 8mm movie camera of Robert Pecotich, and my personal archive comes this very interesting footage of the Northeast Corridor from the Penn Central era around 1970. In addition to the parade of GG1s, Metroliners, and PC freight, units from the Southern, B&O, C&O, and RF&P are also witness along with a track inspection car! Enjoy these views from the past of fast trains on the Northeast Corridor from the early 70s!

I had the pleasure of riding the Budd Metroliner EMU around 1973 or 74 from Philly to DC when i was a kid. Some of those cars were still in the PC/PRR color scheme, and others were painted in Amtrak colors. I remember the green-tinted windows. The fact that they had a food service car blew my mind.

I know it's a longshot but I like to think there's a chance that somewhere out there some engineer who used to drive one of those metroliners or PC locos is able to recognize his vehicle in the video and have a fond recollection of what it was like on the eve of a shifting railroad landscape, who knew that over 50 years after these vids were taken there'd still be a whole plethora of people still taking the time to observe and appreciate everything that once was...

In my opinion, the Budd Metroliner design is quite pleasing.

Beautiful trains, on a beautiful corridor, in a beautiful era. Thank you for this beautiful video! Also, the end of an era. The next year, almost all private passenger railroad companies would merge to form a messy, inconsistent national rail service, known as Amtrak.

Track condition was a bigger factor in holding down the Metroliners' speeds than many realize. Too bad PC never figured out Concrete Ties or CWR.

3:05 and on another note that's pretty rare, to see a GG1 just coupled with a rogue diesel instead of another electric...

Fantastic video of a unique part of American railroading history! :D I was just wondering, would it be possible for me to use this footage as part of an upcoming documentary I'm creating about the history of the Budd Metroliner?

Those were the GOOD DAYS OF EQUIPMENT!! VERY STYLISH INDEED!! UNLIKE THAT NEW UGLY ACELA SETS, SOON TO BE GRACING THE RAILS, HERE IN THE N.E. The G's&Metroliners& Diesels were all well designed!!! And they were graceful at speed!! All of them can outdo anything today, if their horsepower levels was upped, to today's levels!! They certainly had the weight,no question.Earl of El Barrio, NYC,NY.7/23/22.

4:14 what station is that? I think Management from NYC and PRR didnt like the idea of the merger so they just let the combined company kill itself.
