And he's only 38 years old. I'm so excited to see what's to come. Perhaps we are seeing the beginning of a really big one here. He will evolve and change. Consider for example Scorsese's 3rd film was Mean Streets. What will be Eggers Taxi Driver? King of Comedy? Goodfellas? Silence? Of course it will be completely different films. I just love movies and Eggers has real potential. Already knocked out 3 milestones.

He’s just extremely disciplined and dedicated to the craft. Seems like he’d been in the background working hard on other films, while writing and researching his own stories. Obviously it’s a creative medium, but there’s definitely a real craft and technical element to it that he’s become so brilliant at!

@@merlenclownshuffles not only is what you said incredibly pretentious, that's insulting to every other profession involved in filmmaking. Cinematographers, vfx artists, sound directors. And even costume design and set design in film is far more complicated than in theater. Even the very setting of theater doesn't allow actors to perform the subtleties of voice and emotion as in film. So no, film is not "just theater with extra steps"

It most definitely was. Especially the action scene in the 1st act when Amleth and his crew raid the village and the ending-it was awesome.

Absolutely. I hate to say it, but I can't see Eggers ever surpassing it despite his obvious talent because it's such a unique and perfect piece of psychological horror. Here's my analysis without watching the video and seeing Karsten's analysis to bias my viewpoints. The Witch was fantastic and an extremely impressive debut feature film, but it's also a film that is much better on rewatch when you fully understand the themes, and while the shots and style displayed Eggers massive potential they didn't show his finest. There's much to analyze, and a great ambiguous ending to interpret. It is like The Lighthouse in most technical and narrative aspects just a little bit lesser in almost every way but that's not saying much. The Northman was good but not great; in my opinion it suffered a lot from lack of consistency. I don't think big budget Eggers is the best Eggers, as much of his talent lies behind the camera and in his insanely specific and detailed concepts and settings for his films, which he only needs a medium budget for. The Northman showed his ability to create atmosphere and successfully capture a time era long-past, but the larger story was too straight-forward for him to best show off his strengths and engage the audience. I was never really guessing or analyzing, I was just observing it and even the cinematography wasn't quite as bold or insane as his previous films. And I like straight-forward narratives sometimes- I don't need psychological/unique storytelling to be engaged- but his strengths lay elsewhere. I'm hoping he sticks with a 10-20m budget in the future as I think that's his sweet spot. But The Lighthouse... ah man. It is peak modern cinema, and I could analyze it for days but I'll spare it. The setting is PERFECT for Eggers, Defoe and Pattinson are given a flawless script and an atmosphere that leads to career best performances, the audience is constantly at the edge of their toes trying to figure out what's going on and all the while you're looking at some of the best compositions and frames you've ever seen. There's a perfect mix of surreal and straightforward to further the story and make it more interesting, the kind of mix that is present in dreams but almost impossible to accomplish on the screen. The only other film I've seen that does a better job is Mulholland Drive, and that's about it. Basically, to make a long story short, I agree. Lol.

@@jacobyoung729 completely agree, i also feel like big budget leads to the main vision of the directors story being diluted by big time investors who want a say. When in reality they are in no place to give someone like eggers constructive crit. Thats why Lighthouse is a masterpiece.

Well, Eggers was a production designer before transitioning into filmmaking hence why he's good with period piece accuracy.

The northman is based on zero icelandic stuff

That’s awesome, Icelanders are the coolest. Even the Younger Futhark runes were crafted perfectly by an expert runic professor. They built the villages from scratch to be accurate, as they did the lighthouse . Eggers has said he cares more about history than filmmaking.

@@Bayuuk Same here! It's also one of my favorite gothic horror novels ever. Eggers is definitely the director for the job.

Imagine if he were to adapt The Iliad or The Odyssey! Eggers is my favourite director at the moment, and I'm looking forward to his miniseries, but I'm *definitely* excited for him to get his hands on Nosferatu! I also fell in love with him when I went to watch The Witch in the cinemas with my cousin, and both of us loved the experience a lot. I remember a group of three teens sitting a few rows ahead of us and I remember thinking that they would cuss the film by the end, but when credits starts rolling, one of them was adamant that it was a fantastic film and the others were idiots lol

As much as I'd love to see his own take on The Divine Comedy, I genuinely hope that if he does that then he does a TAKE on it and not a 1:1 recreation, or just something inspired by what happens in it. The actual Divine Comedy is a mess of characters and Christian fanfiction and is genuinely really bad lol Not to say it had no impact or that it wasn't good for the time or that it's poorly written, it's just in now times it's pretty meh. Plus trying to make Roman and Greek Gods figures in a Christian setting would be odd for Eggers to attempt. That said, can't wait for Nosferatu :3

@@DarklordofDOOM57 technically not because she turned evil at the end and was eventually consumed by the darkness that is the devil, so that movie is more of a tragic tale at the end. the lighthouse he gets consumed literally by the light when he wasn’t supposed to and gets punish for it at the end of that movie . Now The Northman are main character does some terrible things but actually never actually rules as king and does an honorable death at the end so in comparison he is the only one who dies in good standing in the end

@@seanpanigel5494 death is the opposite of sadness in this movie, the whole viking culture centered on dying honorably. It's hyped up through out the movie, dying in battle, all any of the men want is to continue their lineage and die in battle. That's exactly what happens at the end

in my personal opinion the violence in the northman is a walk in the park compared to any marvel movie, or King Kong vs Godzilla, or any of those god awful transformers movies, id get it if people were talking about the blood or the way the film makes you imagine a lot more violence than you're actually seeing, hell even lord of the rings is more violent.

the thing about lighthouse it has that feeling of short horror novels, you get on read in old houses in the middle of nowhere, specially at cold nights a pretty hard feeling to convey through a movie

I mean I get your opinion but I love how some of the details about Thomas’s backstory sort of slowly fade in with time. It’s mostly very implied with a lot up to interpretation sure, but I love that, and my second watch gave me more ideas for what could have been intended by Eggars. Also everything ‘the light’ is intending to symbolize while also driving the story of these two men going mad is just the SHIT

I share your opinions on The Lighthouse. Great display of acting talent and incredibly unique (at least to modern movies) atmosphere. But I was also asking myself "Okay, how long can this go on?" And just like the 2 characters seemingly stuck in a purgatory - I felt stuck there with them. And not in a good way. Just not my personal taste.

Was going to say the same thing about The Witch. Should be in a lot of conversations for one of the best horror movies ever.

Tbh though I did like The Northman a lot overall, it felt pretty shallow and conventional compared to either of Eggers' previous movies.

@@a.t.3192 I think it might be more conventional than the previous two, which were more buttfuck insane, but The Northman still has that unique style of Robert. That weird father-and-son ritual at the start, the witch, the talking head, the dead warrior hallucination, the limbs nailed to the house. They all fit perfectly and reasonable with the myth of Amleth and the general Norse mythology, and still carried the weirdness of him. I, for one, never expected a director to include such things in a Viking movie! Most people tend to see the Vikings as just brutes and would put conventional themes of war in movies about them. Robert said he struggled with the action genre a lot, and maybe he won't attempt it again, or at least not one as big as this one, but I'm glad he is trying out new types of stories in different genres. Learning and trying new things is how masters improve their craft and stay on top!

Im with you there, loved The Witch and The Lighthouse so much... The Northman unfortunetly was a disapointment. Maybe my expectations were too high thou
