Varg literally escaped prison, held a family up at gun point, hijacked their car, got caught and got zero extension on his sentence. He has plot armour I swear to god.
Fun fact about Cotard’s Syndrome, it manifests after things like a stroke or head trauma. Hearing that our boy, Dead, was beaten severely by bullies it would not surprise me that he would suffer from this.
I'm Norwegian and only knew parts of this story. Interesting video! A side note, the max sentence in Norway is 21 years but it can be extended indefinitely if the person is still considered a danger, like Anders Behring Breivik. That guy will never get out.
@@bluchismoonYou have no idea unless you've been there and I actually have, until of course I saw what we were and got embarrassed. I'm a card carrying nerd with mild autism and was embarrassed about it. Think about that! I'll carry on the metal banner with pride until I die, but pretending that one group is superior to another is just cringe of the highest magnitude. That and so many have come full circle from fighting religion to basically siding with Christian nationalists these days, the logic of defending it just isn't there anymore I'm afraid. Not sure it was ever there honestly.
This video has Drunk History vibes in the best possible way, easy to understand for people that don’t know the history, but still entertaining to those who do because you’re not afraid to be critical or make jokes. Awesome video and I hope you make more metal videos!
I really hope Papa Meat does more videos about his personal interests like this! You can feel his passion about the genre with how much he’s able to get into it, talk so casually about it, as well as just how much he really knows. Like, I love listening to metal but have yet to give black metal a try, this video taught me a lot of interesting stuff and gave me some recommendations to listen to
The fact that they took so much inspiration from Lord of the Rings which was written by a lifelong practicing Catholic and has strong Christian morals to the entire world and themes is quite funny.
Varg's cope is that Tolkien is secretly a practicing Pagan despite Rohan and Gondor in the LOTR trilogy quintessentially being inspired by the friendship between the Eastern Roman Empire and the Goths.
Tolkien outright rejected his books to be an allegory for Christianity or inspired by Christianity.. Him and c.s. Lewis had heated debates over this subject. If anything it is inspired by norse and celtic mythology. As a big Tolkien guy and metal head I don't see how they are too far different. LotR is super metal to me. Another misconception is that metal heads are mean cruel people. Most metal heads are actually in fact "nerds" in the sense that they get really deep into very specific subjects. For example playing guitar can be considered nerdy when you obsess over ever little detail of your playing, learning music theory, learning as much mythology as you can, dark paintings, and so on. That's not to say metal heads can't be wild. But I mean try to describe the average hip hop fan... kinda hard isn't it? I wouldn't be shocked if a guy I know who likes rap isn't a career criminal. Same for metal, don't be surprised when we don't actually want to hurt anyone, and like a variety of things that don't correlate in an obvious way to our favorite music.
The lotr 3 strongest protagonists each represent an aspect of christ. Frodo is the pilgrim. Gandalf is the councilor. Aragorn is the returning King. Intentional or not, Tolkiens work has metaphors up to its balls.
Fun Fact, my mother introduced me to Cannibal Corpse. She’s also one of the only people I’ve ever met that prefers Chris Barnes on vocals. And to this day she only keeps 3 cds in her car. Cannibal Corpse Gallery of Suicide Some Toby Mac CD And Nickelback. Love you mom.
If you are into good lyrics with Cannibal Corpse, listen to When Death Replaces Life. I always had the sensation that that song is one of the few socially critical takes from that band. Also the guitar solo makes me feel wonderfully uneasy. Maybe it's just me.
i KNEWW you had to bring up metal on this channel at some point and i’m SOOO glad you did because this is one of my fav channels and metal is my fav music genre so i’m VERYY excited for any future metal vids!
Tbf Euronymous was absolutely soulless to use someone's suicide for publicity like that. I would be mad, too. Necrobutcher and Hellhammer seem to be the only two that left the band still well-adjusted.
Black Metal is awesome, but just know that all the drama surrounding Mayhem and Burzum is not the face of Black Metal. They're not the originators and they're not what Black Metal is all about. Their music is awesome though, but they just get way too much attention for the controversies surrounding them, when Black Metal existed for years before them.

awesome video as usual. as a metal fan and a guitarist though just wanted to make clear euronymous did not invent tremolo. Its been used in music for centuries on various instruments and genres. He definitely popularized it for black metal but it has been used before the guitar even existed and in genres like surf music. Miserlou is a good example of a song that uses tremelo picking before Euronymous was even born.
I mean you fail to realize that most of these guys dont want to admit that Jimi was good at guitar because of uh some phenotypes hes got going on. Most people who say this probably wouldnt believe that the banjo as a instrument is actual a evolved form of an African instrument. Erasure is a white mans game. Dont forget that metal is racist, nazi prone, and white.
I have no idea what brought race into this but yeah, of course the progenitors of black metal wouldnt have liked that, cuz yeah, they WERE racist, but to call an OFFSHOOT and counterculture of mainline metal, which is SUCH a vast genre, a representative of how racist, nazi prone, and white ALL metal is, is inaccurate. In fact, this is especially so considering most metalheads are some of the most forward thinking people around, black metal is just a counterculture to THAT. Take for example, more modern mainstream bands like Slipknot, Ghost (I know, its both metal and not metal), Sleep Token, so on, so forth, I don't see anything like that, that would even hint at racism.
Yeah I was thinking that When he said it but really it's OK It was heavily popularized by Mayham so we know what we meant Period but this is why people hate guitarist because we allways have to make comments like this😅. Let's stop doing stuff like this so people don't hate us anymore
please do more of these metal videos this was really good and there’s so many stories in the metal scene, it’d be really cool to see your take on sludge metal and the bands that rose out of new orleans and how they intertwined doom and punk sounds
@@yo-sefakimbey7009 nah florida panhandle but the sound of nola sludge metal is so cool and interesting as someone whose from a swampy yet beachy place, i’m more so around pensacola area
your band shirts in videos was always cool to see as a metalhead myself, loved this video i was so pumped to see you talk about metal and the stupid cool lore behind bm and their church burning antics. Would love to see more metal related content from you man!
Just want to say I really like this video. Not enough people talk about metal, and I personally enjoy hearing about it on podcasts. Would love to see more metal videos from you.
so happy we’re integrating the love for metal into this channel. love that one of my favorite channels recently is covering a topic i have so much interest in
I'd reckon Meat's been in the metal scene for years upon years now I wouldn't be surprised nor mind if he branched out into counter-culture history, those types of topics are a lot of his shtick nowadays. it's a varied line-up that I'm not fully familiar with, but would enjoy watching regardless. I think the older counter-culture movement did more good than harm and would like to see how it evolved, especially after I fell off to it after the BMTH/BVB era.
@@SGEnjoyeriirc Meat said he did Metal singing gigs at bars and joints in Kansas City. I was watching a random vid and he mentioned it I remember cause I'm from KC and thought it was cool
My dad said he doesn't listen to Metallica it's too "heavy" lol and that was the day I lost all respect for him 😂 I used to get in soo much trouble when they checked what music I was listening to
Dude, you have massiv range! Spanning from pumpkin spice coffees, cryptics, anime, SCP, cerial, and the little mermaid; I wouldn't be surprised if you did a baddass video on trampolines, kitchen products, or horses. Love your stuff and always curious see what you do next.
Hi, language nerd here 🤓 👋. The Greek work for demon is daimōn. Euronymous comes from eury- and nomos, which mean "broad" and "pasture". Together they mean something like wide-ruling. He was a minor literary figure whose been lost to time. Eurynomos, said by the Delphian guides to be one of the daimones of hades. So yeah, demon is actually the modern anglicized greek word for daimōn not euronymous.
My wife is Norwegian and I’ve spent a lot of time there. We live in the US for school and work now (I’m originally Canadian but got US citizenship last year, she’s working on it rn) but we usually go back every few months to see family. the scenery is absolutely stunning. 🇳🇴 ♥️ 🇺🇸
Norwegian metalhead here! Some notes I wanted to make through this vid 12:01 it wasn't Øystein who made the bootleg. It was made in Latin America if I'm not mistaken. 13:48 the photo shown of the building with the fist on it isn't helvete, it's Blitzhuset, in skippergata 6 17:14 LORDS OF CHAOS.... erm..... 18:53 LORDS OF CHAOS... erm.. (x2) 19:13 this pronunciation was solid. Love it. 20:03 this references the interview in Bergens tidene (BERGEN MENTIONED!!! JEG TOK MIN NYSTEMTE CITAR I HEEEENDEEEE!!!) not the biggest newspaper in Norway, per se. Definitely the biggest in Bergen (again, it's "Bergen times") but I do assume he's been in the bigger papers nationwide (VG, Aftenposten, Dagbladet) 24:28 lieeee. It's one of our biggest export markets! Like we are so well known for it I guess 28:11 this!! I agree so much!! (Both with the metal take and the V*rg take)
Sick video and PLEASE more metal talk, would love to hear more of your opinions on it and on some of the bands you like. I saw Sanguisugabogg last year and will be seeing Dying Fetus and 200 Stab Wounds this year, cool to see that you’re a big fan of them too
I love this ... Thank you for this video papa, always awesome to see people talk about or bring up attention to metal, such an amazing genre of music. Theres a band out there for EVERYONE if they just give it a chance
I never understood Death Metal until I got the job I have now. One of the guys i work with has a band and first off, I always thought Death Metal fans/bands were crazy in some way or another, but the guy I work with is super chill and is like a beacon of light whenever he gets to talk about what his band does or even the shows he helps setup for other bands. I think it was a good 4 months in I started to understand Death Metal but my god, some of the more history I learn the more insane it becomes.
I asked a metalhead about why they're always so chilld and he told me is that its pretty much unspoken rule that metalheads kinda have to be chill considering the genre itself has a bad wrap in the public eye
I love how they based their whole lives off of being these hardcore bloodlust-y walking corpses, but then they try to incorporate references to a fantasy epic that centers around the unwavering love and friendship of a bunch of sensitive flowery characters. I’m a fan of both metal and lotr too, but like, I never considered associating them. Led Zeppelin is the rock band my brain always connects to Tolkien, as _on the nose_ as that might be lol
It sounds like they liked the bad guys in it. Kinda like Christianity is all about love and forgiveness but they think Satan is just the coolest guy. Kinda like some people who watch the boys and think Homelander is the true hero.
Was that a nod to Dethklock at around 3:35? I like it. Also loving the corpsepaint and manbun. I understand it is necessary with your hair, but if you think of the association of pretension and manbuns, plus blackmetal dripping with pretension, it's just too perfect! I kinda wish it stayed during the whole thing.
Cool that you chose to use Dead’s make up. This story has a lot to it and I feel like you could have made an hour long video explaining all the little subcultures that led to everything happening when and how it did
I have been waiting so long for you to talk about metal in any way I am so fucking happy, I always thought you could talk about famous examples of horror in metal and why horror is such a staple in this genre of music (but seriously pls just talk more about metal)
Great video! Few corrections, Black Metal started in England and then Sweden in the early 80s, (as you mentioned) a band named Venom created the name, image and some of the genre's sound, and it was then turned into what we know it as today by Quorthon from the Swedish Black Metal band Bathory. After that Mayhem came along. Oystein did not create tremolo picking, that had been used in Metal since the 70s, but it was certainly popular with Black Metal. There was also Hellhammer, who then became the more Death Metal oriented Celtic Frost, Celtic Frost being my favourite band of all time. Euronymous got his label name "Deathlike Silence" from another 80s Black Metal band from Germany, Sodom. Finally, a list of other classic first wave (81-91) Black Metal bands, because they rule! Bulldozer (Italy) Necrodeath (Italy) Onslaught (UK) Sabbat (UK) Poison (Germany) Master's Hammer (Czechia) Sarcofago (Brazil) Sepultura (Brazil) Mercyful Fate (Denmark) Mefisto (Sweden) Feel free to add more in the replies!
@@evigkrig4386 Not really, Bathory's second and third albums were the entire foundation for the "True Norwegian Black Metal" sound and Mayhem didn't deviate from it one bit.
the editing and composition here just keeps getting better and better. amazing job guys you've come a long way. we see how much effort and enthusiasm you put into these videos for us and for that we are eternally grateful. rock on boys🤘❤ (props to coleo, tk and mike. yall are our knights in shining armor)
ACTUALLY SO HYPED TO SEE PAPA COVER THIS!!!! Love seeing this upload td, Mayhem lore is what really got me into norwegian black metal and stuff. Ugh love you MeatCanyon, acc just a cool dude who acc talks about cool stuff.
This video is fantastic, I’m new to your channel, I just came from creep cast and the first video I watch is about metal??? I love it. I didn’t know the stories behind the bands but I listen to Burzum to help me sleep lol I’d love it if you did a video on more classic bands and the stories behind those, wasn’t Slayer also associated with burning churches? Or was that black sabbath? Oh I also heard that slipknot did some messed up stuff to get into the dark vibe for live shows
Great video, hope to see more metal themed videos in future. Also love the shout out to Black Braid, currently one of my favorite bands to listen. The River of Time Flows Through Me is absolute banger, those drums by Neil Schneider get me every time.
I am a long time fan of the channel,I have noticed your shirts, I love metal music and have a huge collection, mostly of deathmetal and black metal I love this video so much … thank you for bringing light to this subject in a light hearted way as a huge fan of first and second wave and a Floridian that has grown up with all of the brutal shit I love this video and you did a good job portraying all of the “characters” egos
I was instantly intrigued when I heard the story of Norwegian black metal in the 90s, and it inspired me to check out the music, and now black metal and dungeon synth are two of my favorite genres of music lol. Papa meat describes it perfectly when he says it feels like standing in a cold Norwegian forest, you really do get that feeling, and though it’s aggressive, it’s oddly..peaceful
I've seen a lot of videos about this topic but yours is probably the best one I've seen. People always try to paint one of the Mayhem members as the hero of the story but truthfully, they were all very awful humans (some worse than others but you get the idea). They were young artistic visionaries, but they were bad people. Thanks for covering this. Two other great 2nd wave black metal bands are Immortal and Enslaved. I recommend the albums "At the Heart of Winter" and "Vikingligr Veldi". Ulver's "Bergtatt" is also a fantastic folk black metal album
Even Necrobutcher? Is he awful? Your recommendations are spot on. Though the last two Enslaved albums went right over my head. Borknagar is another good one.
@@johngavin1175 I mean Necrobutcher has said that if Varg didn't kill Euronymous then he would have. Obviously he could be joking but from the interview he seemed very serious about it
Good video! I’d like to point out one Oslo fact, you showed some pictures of the Helvete, and also mixed in a an outdoor picture of a building that is in an other part of Oslo. The one building with a fist breaking a swastika is called the blitz house.
Whenever people wear metal shirts or whenever I just see them I always feel like I'm deciphering Egyptian hieroglyphics on a waterlogged page of a yugioh manga
I never expected this man to become a sort of muse of mine when watching the first meatcanyon animations years ago nowadays i get all kinds of ideas for music & lyrics from watching papameat videos thank you good sir for the ispiration this video in particular was a banger the boss clearly knows his stuff
Great video man. Was interested in Mayhems story last year and saw the album cover and the movie Lords of Chaos (which was meh as u said), but it was awesome hear u break it down with all the facts and the speculations. Awesome hearing u share something about you're passionate about
17:46 Those Norwegian churches are like little cathedrals. They're beautiful, very old, and made entirely of wood. It's like destroying a World Heritage site.
It‘s awesome seeing you mention Devil Master in this video. I’ve been a big fan for some years and I hope this gives them a bit more exposure especially since they’ve been doing really big things lately
19:26 The metal scene is absolutely NOT “known to be racist”. That sh*t is not tolerated in any scene I’ve ever been a part of, and I’m a Black woman (younger millennial). I’ve always been quite well protected by white male metalheads, at shows and just in life. I was never made to feel like anything other than part of the family. Even in black metal in particular (modern black metal) NSBM is a niche sub-genre. It’s not 1991 anymore. And even back then, racism was not the norm in the wider metal community (from what I’ve been told, I wasn’t there).
