The Norwegian King's Speech : Norway is one Reaction! 

Moved to Norway almost 13 years ago from Germany. I have to say that I have never felt so much at home as in Norway. Love the Royal family. They are so down to earth. If I don't have to I'll never consider to move back to Germany. Norge har blitt hjemmet mitt.

I came to Norway at 6 years old, from Afghanistan. Norway welcomed us and in no small terms saved my family. When i turned 18, i immediately joined the Norwegian armed forces, and proudly served this King, my King, our King, for 10 years. I'm reluctantly a civillian again now, but the King will always be the one i look to, and when the time comes, his son, who is possibly the only man in the world with the potential to be an even greater man than his father. I'm proud to see your reaction to his words being so strong, it can't be anything but good will resonating with you, in a world and time where we most often hear of hate and divisiveness.

i love how our king is so casual. when i was eight, and out sailing with my family i saw the king and simply walked up to him. i asked him if he was the king, and his response was simply, "i think so, at least i was when i left shore".

King Harald makes the best speeches. He dares to be emotional, he's always inclusive, and he's got the best, kickass sense of humour. But he probably took it one step too far when he said, on camera, that the reseach station in the Antarctic was named after his wife, Queen Sonja. "What?", she replied, "it's called Troll". "Exactly!" he snorted, and laughed really loudly. I suspect he got an earful for that later on. 🤣🤣🤣

Fun fact: our Norwegian King was taking a regular flight years back. Some tourists onboard asked the flight attendant where his bodyguards were. The attendant replied; "they’re everywhere. He has five million of them" (the whole population of Norway). A great and wise man indeed. Just like his father and grandfather was before him. We are so fortunate to live in this beautiful country. In every way.

Alt for Norge is his motto, "everything for Norway". Our fantastic King is not like this "huge man that rules", for me it is like the grandfather I respect and love like my own family, and I am sure I am not alone..... It is so fantastic to have a non political representative for the country, and the royal family is doing a fantastic job.

A cool thing about the Norwegian language. We don’t say “the king of Norway”, like he owns us and we are his loyal subjects, we say “Norway’s king”. He is our king, he works for us and he knows it. Not a ruler but a leader:)

I am a Norwegian married to an American who is a minority herself living with me in Norway. I remember that speech made an impression on her back in the day. Even if stuff like that may seem like empty fluff it matters to people. Especially when you come from abroad and you are not sure if you fit in. It matters that somebody all Norwegian respect and look up to say something that makes you feel included. I did not use to care for the monarchy and was a Republican but from traveling and living abroad I gradually came to understand what the monarchy meant to Norway and to me. While he has no real power. Like he doesn't make laws or run the government, he is still such an important person for Norway to function as a country. He is this kind of glue that holds so much of the unspoken invisible stuff together. He is a great unifier. At all difficult times we have been through he has been very good at putting words on the feelings people have. Now lately with COIVD19. For the government he is a sense of stability and continuity. New people come in to government all the time. New prime ministers, foreign ministers etc. But they can all go talk to the king as someone who has been there with every single government for many decades. He doesn't really give advice on policy but on how to deal with other people. Like when you are on a foreign visit with other state leaders, the King often helps make those things run smoother because he knows so many of the foreign heads of state. He is like a door opener. And by not being political, unlike say a President, he can be a unifier. The King does not belong to party of political agenda and can thus be someone everyone can get behind. I think all countries need that. People need somebody that they feel represent them regardless of their political beliefs or affiliations. I know the concept of a King is really old fashion but strange this institution really works. Perhaps because we chose to be a Monarchy through elections and Norwegian Royal family has always known that they serve the people and not the other way around.

My dad came to Norway in 1971. I will forever defend Norway with pride. I have always felt included and I love my Norwegian friends.

Moved here 15 years ago from the US. I have missed very little from home as this has become the home and country I always dreamed the US could be. The beauty of the land and people, the way of living and thinking makes this place spectacular and everyone could do it if they chose social kindness and responsibility over self. When the King made that speech, I cried because I wish everyone could have this. He is a good man and you can tell his love, respect and duty he feels for the people here as his family was CHOSEN and he shows us he knows that it is a unique responsibility he has to fill. He feels like a grandfather to us all and I think his son will carry on in a very similar manner.

In fairness to him, he's lived a life, his granddad was not supposed to be king, he himself was a refugee when he was young, he witnessed a nation go from being middle class to filthy rich... as far as kings go, he has experienced all a king needs to be good

Came to Norway as a student 15 years ago from Spain. Now I have a beautiful Norwegian family. I also became a Norwegian citizen myself. Love this country.

As a norwegian myself, I think a lot of us take stuff like this for granted. Not that we don't appreciate it. But when I come across videos like this and see reactions from people from other countrys, I get reminded how blessed we are. You are a good person, I can see that after just seeing this one video from you. Keep it up buddy!

In the inauguration oath of our monarch we have (free translated): "To serve the Nation as a good and loyal King is obliged to do." Which should be valid for every monarch, King Harald is honoring it fully.

The kings family in Norway are special. When the second war and Hitler took Norway, all the politcs people didnt stood up. And the kinng stood up and said NO we dont give you Norway. That was King Haralds Grandad King Håkon. He was the one that came from Denmark. We need our Kings house more than ever. His family sees all people who live in Norway. I love our King and Queen and prince. And theyre family. Long leave the king.

I met the King some years ago while hiking. We had a small chat and i can say that never have i ever met someone in such a position of power being so down to earth and not beliving that he is anything better than anyone.

People don't realise how chill the Norwegian royals are. I was driving past a gas station and from the distance I saw 4-5 black SUVs and that's not something you see in Norway. Turns out, as I got closer, that was the security entourage of our Prince who was also driving his own car and he was waiting for me to pass so he could take his car on the road. They didn't close any road, and the Prince followed normal traffic rules. God bless them!

I moved to Norway 51 years ago, and felt at home from day 1. I love the country and it's people

I've actually seen our Crown Prince at the end of a grocery store line more often than the end of a parade. I could live comfortably in a republican Norway, but I love the Norwegian Royal family.

As an norwegian and from my experiences and how I also act myself: If I meet someone from syria, pakistan, somalia or any other country and they speak fluent norwegian...Then I see and think of them as norwegians. Also I have not heard people label others like african-norwegians, arabian-norwegians etc. Yes, you are an immigrant if you have not not learned the culture or language. But those that have, even if they have a foreign accent..they are norwegians in my eyes and also among many of those I know. Somehow I feel the US is still clinging on to the past. White pride or black pride is not something that is positive or helpful. It just creates more separation. How can I or anyone be proud of our color. All I did was being born. If I was proud of being white that would setting my standards at the bare minimum. I could just as well say I am proud of laying in my couch all day. You should be proud of your accomplishments. The more we talk about race and color, the longer it will take to fight racism. Why do people allow themselves to be labelled african-americans voluntairly? It seems at times they think there is pride and positivity with that term....But really it isn't. As long as you call yourself african-american you will never feel truly "american". White or black, if you are born in the USA and you talk english....You are an american. No additional labels. I feel almost no one talks or consider this an issue. Labels are not always a good thing, except in grocery stores.

As a Norwegian I somehow missed this speech.. or maybe I forgot about it. I’d never call myself a monarchist, but this was truly something else. Reminds me of the King’s speech in march 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic when Norway was in complete lockdown. I don’t even remember his words, only the way the speech made me feel as a Norwegian and a nurse in the frontline; Calm, reassured and hopeful. Grateful for this showing up in my feed and reminding me not to take everything for granted.

i live in Norway for 10 now, im form Lithuania... it made me a better person... i hope to bring back at least a bit of their way of live back to my country... the way they welcomed me and helped me has no words, and if Norway ever needs me, it is my duty to give back to this wonderful nation..

If I may, since you are Intrigued by the king's speech. I recommend to either listen to King Haakons speeches from ww2. Or watch the movie "The King's Choice" as it really demonstrates that since we gained the Royal Family in 1905. They have done everything to keep the democracy holy and never attemted to sieze more power. Simply being a rock and symbol for the Norwegian people in times of turmoil. As many other have written here: "Alt for Norge!"

I wasn't born in norway but i live here and i remember when the king did this particular speech. not gonna lie, to this day there are still (too) many people that were born here and are racist but ever since this speech i can tell those people that they don't belong here no matter where they were born. They don't belong here, the king clearly said that they are not norwegian.

I served in the Norwegian Royal Guard. Although it was a hard time, I do not regret standing guard for the royal family. They are good people; they are us.

I’m in the UK & have family who moved to Norway. Still there 30+ years later. It’s a wonderful country, takes care of everyone & one of the best standards of living in the world. You should visit if you can, it’s beautiful & amazing

This is what a King should do - LEAD HIS PEOPLE. His Majesty took a risk with this speech, making enemies of those that want ethnic purity in his Country, but he said what is RIGHT !!!

I moved to Norway in 2019. This is the most open society I have ever seen. It is not perfect, but there is no country in the world where people are so open and not judgemental.

Best King EVER! My father went to deer-hunting with him. They called eachother just by their firstnames. What a man and what a KING!

I always loved his speeches, but that speech was definitively special. Do note though that European monarchies are not political anymore and their power is mostly just ceremonial. Royalty in Europe tries to remain as politically neutral as possible and are mostly just a symbolic and decorative representation of the nation. The Norwegian King have been stretching the neutrality at times, but he keeps the message so basic that it's hard for haters to disagree with the overall sentiment without looking entirely depraved in the process, lol.

Don't knock until you have tried it! I moved here in 2006 to be with my husband from the US. I have not regretted it ! If I could begin with the work environment, health care, pension benefits and the positive impact they have, I could go on for a week! I feel apprecialted here, something I didn't feel to often in US. By all means , plan a trip here!

I see people have already said some of what I thought I would say. But I am born and raised in Norway. And our King, well The Royal Family in itself, is in my opinion the best Royal Family in the world. To listen to King Harald have his New Years speech is also something that can make you think twice, get emotional and happy. As someone already said, they are down to earth people, very nice and open. There is a reason why we love them and care about them so much! Would be fun to meet you when you visit Norway😊

With kings like him, his father and grandfather, no wonder we are a Monarcy.💗 Netflix has had a few extremelyi good productions from Norway regarding the WWII and what happened here and abroad. Quite interesting how the Crown Princess of Norway and her friendship w F.D.R. Rosevelt changed the course of the war. And also, when Norway was attacked in 2011, when 77 people was massacred(69 kids) by a deranged but very determined and focused man.... Instead of going ballistic and fearful, we mobilised and 20%+ of the country joined marches and gatherings the days after. In OSLO just days after a bomb that went off in the goverment quarter and killed 8 people, 200000 people gathered in the streets of Oslo, holding roses, hands and singing. Oslo had in 2011 605000 citizens. We chose NOT to go to arms and be angry.

I'm lucky to be born in Norway. Healthcare, education, social security, freedom of speach, focus on rehabilitation in stead of punishment and so on. #AltforNorge :)

I've had the discussion concerning immigration several times, and there are absolutely both negative and positive aspects around it. I see countries like England, France, Germany and Sweden making a lot of mistakes in their immigration policy, that in turn creates dual societies, ghettos and creates fractures in the population. So non regulated immigration is a bad idea in all aspects, and is a detrimental force upon a nations stability. Here in Norway we have taken a very different approach, with a restricted immigration policy and a heavy focus put on integration, immigrants learning the language and culture and spreading our new citizens around the country. This really does seem to be the best policy and I see its successes every day. It is a very heartwarming feeling when you meet someone that might have only lived in the country for 1-3 years, but have dedicated themselves to learning the language, uphold and treasure the same ideals as us and holds as much love in their heart for their adoptive nation as most of us do. Our King Harald is among the kindest people and best ambassador for our nation, and we are lucky to have him. Hopefully the crown prince will be a worthy successor to his father's, grandfather and great grand fathers legacy.

The royal family of Norway is also not "supposed" to express themselves politically out to the public. They also act like normal people and seem kinda normal. The crown princess goes to a regular Norwegian high school with other «normal» teenagers . The king usually visits my home county to fish in a river which is known for great salmon. The timing is different every summer, and secret, but rumor has it that he lives at a farm owned by two brothers and in the evening they drink norwegian aquavit and chat/have fun till late at night. If you see him when hes here, he could be standing with the water up to his knees in the river. Queen Sonja go on mountain hikes, and we have this weird thing here where we always say hi to strangers when we pass each other on hikes out in the nature, but in urban areas that would be SO weird. So if you meet queen Sonja on a hike, a lot of people say «hey sonja!» and does not include the royal title, even though that is the norm like EVERYWHERE else you meet a royal family member. I appreciate the title. Very often, he is referred to as “the King of Norway” by foreigners. Easy mistake to make, but he makes a point of wanting to be called “Norway’s King”. Seems like an insignificant difference, but the former means he “owns” Norway, while the latter means Norway “owns” him. He is first and foremost a servant of the country (and ofc a representative). It’s not about being a ruler. It’s about doing your part to contribute to society. I think this is the very reason why we still have a monarchy in Norway. We see him more as a responsible father, than a powerful ruler. And frankly, he holds basically no power anyway. It’s all about representing Norway in the best way possible.

I'm in principle against the monarchy, as in nobody should be born to a position of power. But I love our king.

Thats how an «authoritarian» leader speaks. No talk about GDP or the economy/money being the most important issue for a country. A country is people , and the unity of those people is what conserns the King most. Without unity, a country faces civil wars and unrest in the future and without unity, an enemy can easily destroy a country.

I am Filipino Norweigian and I always love to hear his speech in every occasions. The Norwegian monarchy are simple royalties. Reasons all norweigians love the king .

America had the option to go in our direction. You have ONE man in US politics that understand this, and that is Bernie Sanders. So glad i live here in Norway.

Alt for Kongen! (Royal Guard's 4 company, 2005). It was a hard service, but it made me better, and knowing what we protected was a family that represents all our families made it very much worth it. Just yesterday I finished training for the Home guard (mandatory reservist service) and I do so proudly (not normal due to the mandatory part), why? Because of the essence in this speech. It shows who we are, and what we wish to be, and it is what true leadership looks like, not Putler or any other demagogue forcing their will on the masses. So when the King says; All for Norway, I still find myself responding All for the King.

I feel that the Kings Speech explained norwegian people in general in a nutshell. We are like that, and I love that speech! Lovely to hear that you want to visit! You are welcome!

A beautifully progressive message from a reigning monarch, especially considering he belongs to a generation that isn't always comfortable embracing equality.

As a Kiwi, Jacinda Ardern's speech after Christchurch was one thing. I think I'd prefer a message like this. Damn, but that is a powerful message. There has to be a huge measure of freedom in knowing who you are as a nation.

I'm Norwegian, and although I don't support the monarchy as a matter of principle, the King is a great guy and I will remember that speech for ever.

I'm Norwegian and want a republic, but I have to say the king is awesome. His father, King Olav, was also great. They called him the people's king for good reason. I believe his son, prince Haakon, will also do a great job. I just think our leaders should be elected, not born into that responsibility.

The king of Norway is probably the worlds history's best monarch.

Fun fact, former king Olav used public transportation at times, no guards needed. If he was recognized, everyone loved him.

I have to say. After almost 20 years living in Norway, that message is true. I think I experienced more discrimination in my own country and, believe me, Norway is not perfect, but is surely the closest you can get to it.

This whole speech is beautiful but 5:13 his pronunciation of “Allah”…. I didn’t doubt his sincerity, but I’ve never heard a non-Muslim pronounce it so accurately. This is a man who truly cares about diversity. Idk I’ve seen Ramadan/Eid al Fitr lumped in with December’s “happy holidays” when it had been celebrated literally MONTHS earlier… I remember thinking if you care to wish Muslims a blessed holiday, at least find out when said holiday is. Much respect to my ancestral homeland, and to her king 🇳🇴❤️

I'm norwegian, and personally I don't think the world needs royalty. But as long as we have it, I'm SO thankful for our king, because he's a kind and wise man! The world would be a better place if everyone just were kind to eachother ✌️🥀

In Norway, we learn about culture the moment we are born, and gradually aquire more knowledge about other countries and cultures as we grow old. In the US, study of cultures and nations start with, at best, an extra curriculum in college. Or in a university, if that path is chosen. No wonder 'muricans are blind to the Greater World. To me it is surprising to hear about 'muricans hardly knowing of anything beyond Mexico or Canada. That is REALLY not good.

I am a republican, in the europeen sence of the word, meaning I dont belive in inhereting power. That being said, we have been damn lucky with our royals, and the next king Håkon is a fantastic person as well. A true humanist. And after him we will have our first Queen, Ingrid, and she is just the same. The first Queen since Harald the first (850 to 923) made theese 19 tiny countries into a slightly bigger country, The path to the north.
