Someone wrote an incredible review on Letterboxd and all I can think about is that--personally, in my opinion-- it gives off not just the eeriness of being a child and being afraid of the dark - but also within the first five minutes, the sense of dread that gave off the feeling of childhood abuse. It was so familiar, and dragged me back to those memories, and I haven't watched the movie for longer than five minutes since I first tried...

I've never experienced something quite like my reaction to this movie. It's love/hate. It was really boring for most of my first watch. But I was intrigued. And I'm fascinated by it more and more after the fact. The atmosphere is so unique. It does capture a nostalgic, dreamlike (nightmarish) feeling. I love the theories of what the actual plot may be. It is very flawed as a movie of course. I think somewhere in that bloated run time is a shorter edit of something much more effective. Still as it stands I think it's an instant classic.

I can totally understand the love/hate reaction. It’s not a movie for everyone and does suffer from a few things like the length. I think the first 40 minutes almost lost me when I went to see it in theaters. But it’s not like any horror movie I’ve seen and I’m ecstatic people are giving it a shot and talking about it extensively. If you’re looking for a shorter version of this movie, I’d recommend checking out the director’s short film, heck. It served as a proof of concept for what Skinamarink would eventually become and in some ways, it is better (in my opinion).

I watched it twice last night, back ro back. I wasn`t bored for a second but I had a good idea what I was going into, so I turned out the lights and turned up the volume. I am still thinking about this film 24 hours later and I know I will keep going back to it.

I tried to watch this with my family. My mom is a kindergarten teacher who works with a lot of kids at Kevin & Kaylee’s age. The second we heard Kevin’s agonized cries from stabbing himself, she broke down and left. I kinda forgot how sensitive to that she was, especially because we’ve watched The Shining and other great horror films. The fact it got her like that, while most movies put her to sleep, shows how effective the film is. Edit: She didn’t even want to finish it. She asked me (because I watched it first) if it at least had a happy ending. I said no. She said this film was truly cruel and evil.

It was definitely one of the cruelest horror movies I've ever seen. The scene of the blood splattering repeatedly and Kevin asking if he "Could watch something happy for once" were just so sad. The former was one of the hardest hitting scenes I've seen in horror even though so little is shown, but all it implied was so sad and cruel.

10:44 center-top, is that a face poking out of the darkness or am I seeing things? looks like a nose, and from there a head is in view for a brief second before retreating back into the darkness.

I personally got so disturbed by this movie, personally. I felt so much suspense so much dread and so much tension. I just really was caught off guard by this movie and I just was so impressed by it!! I’m glad this movie got made as I both highly enjoy it and appreciate it too! It’s super unsettling and it can be interpreted in any way. Is this a nightmare, is there actually a demon taking over two children and torturing them, or is it just a metaphorical and trippy thriller about child abuse and neglect. The ambiguity is what makes me frightened. I felt so helpless watching this movie that I sometimes wanted to stop watching it. The sounds also added to it and made it creepy as it just made me jump and imagine creepy things in my head and that made it all the more worse. Bravo, Mr. Ball!!

Do you remember rooms changing as a kid? Of course it's done by a child's imagination, but this film is the closest I've come to it since.

dude, i found this on reddit while i was trying to find something to watch while i drew. Clicked on this, watched it, expected to see it had at least 20k views, and saw it had 658?? You are severely underrated, your editing, style of writing, and mic quality are very professional. Keep up the good work, man, you're gonna blow up one day and people are gonna have a great backlog to work through.

I was genuinely scared of this movie. Like what you explained, I felt like I was just as helpless as the kids, I felt like a child, I didn’t know what was about to happen and I couldn’t do anything about it. When I first watched it I tried watching it with my dad but he walked out 5 minutes into the movie saying “it’s boring”. I understand, but that really frustrated me with how quickly he walked out.

as a schizophrenic, this film feels like… the essence of it in a film. it’s the feeling of ‘did i see something?’ ‘what did i just hear?’ ‘was that something?’ ‘is that real or not?’ and while it certainly hasn’t helped my hallucinations (keep seeing fisher price phones), it is a very good film!! very evocative!!
@StaticWonderland

Interesting! I never thought about viewing the movie on that level and it does make sense. I actually just looked it up and it turns out the director has Schizophrenia as well so that adds another layer to the movie to keep in mind when I watch it again! Sorry the damn Fisher Price phone keeps making an appearance for you though.

I bought this movie a couple of weeks ago. Saw it with a group of friends. We turn it off at 2AM terrified when the voice said “Kaylee” the same name of one of my friend’s girlfriend.

Amazing video, best analisis of the movie. When I was a kid, I suffer a terrible night with high fever. My mom stay in the room to take care of me, suddenly, in the middle of the night, I hear a voice asking me to play with my hot wheels, or else my mom will die. It was a nonsense fever alucination but in that moment I stand up, crying and start playing with my toys in the dark. My mom just ask me to sleep again and she didnt really think about why I was doing that. During the covid days I had fever alucinations again. Even if that was a more recent experience I barely remember that night. But that terrible night as a kid keeps in my mind and this movie transport me directly to that.

As a fan of horror for years, especially thoughtful, slow burn horror, I can't believe how bored I was by this film. The trailer was fantastic, the look and feel of it is excellent, but I just didn't enjoy it at all. It's right up my alley, but man I was bored the whole time. That being said, this video was fascinating, and your take on all this made me rethink a lot of this film. You may not see this comment a full year after this video was made, but I hope that you do, because you managed to pull off something incredible - you made something excellent out of something I found terrible. Great job, seriously great work

I like that a low budget indie film got recognition and success, but unfortunately, for me it was 100 minutes of nothing, it was too long for what it is, it didn’t feel like a nightmare to me, I don’t remember my childhood nightmares having film noise, and it didn’t even live up to its reputation as an experimental film, because it kept leaning on cheap jump scares, I guess creative scares require talent and effort 🤷🏼‍♂️
