At a guess, I would say that what's happening here is that the Mother has experienced a (or possibly several) very severe trauma(s). Most likely her brother's death. Family members appearing to people (hallucinations) after they die is something that happens to a LOT of people in grief. The difference is that most people seek therapy or find some other, healthy way to rationally deal with the irrational they are experiencing. She, however, has decided to accept it as real, which was the first stepping stone towards gearing her entire life around this lie. Now imagine that you live alone with this woman. She is your mother. And every time you try to convince her (or just mention) that her brother is actually dead for good (without an afterlife or similar), or that some part of a different trauma of hers is not accurate, she gets insanely angry at you [this is evidenced by the continual putting down of her daughter (e.g. 15:10), pretending not to hear her and the ease of flippancy where anger is involved (20:53)]. I think most people would cave under that pressure. The act of which was the first stepping stone for the daughter. However, I am still left confused by the emotions the mother shows. The over-enthusiastic laughing, crying (17:58) and weird repetitions (14:06) begs a lot of unanswered questions. My only theory is that she has become so disconnected from reality and other people (she said herself that they deliberately live as far away from civilisation as possible and she didn't recognise many of the social-media/entertainment industry references) that what constitutes a normal emotional response for her has become extremely skewed. But I could be wrong, it might all be an act so they can charge freaking $70/hour! The crying at 17:58 supports that. I've studied acting and I would say with ~95% certainty that she is acting there. Poorly. But the anger at 20:53 does not. Adopting that anger (and at other points throughout the video) came way easy to her than sadness did. She's practised that. A lot. Which I would argue implies that this is all trauma-based because if she IS in some kind of denial, then she is has no reason to be sad often as she's denying the thing to be sad about fully happened, whereas she has every reason to be angry often when someone disagrees with that denial. Thus, she's more practised in anger, which we see here. TL;DR: Trauma.

I think part of why she was emotional when pulling the 'trama strand' from Wubby was her realizing she is doing this sham to another person and putting on a show. In body language, tonality, dress, and vocal gait, it all comes off as a theatrical performance. The kind a person gives when they want sympathy. I see it regularly when patients want me to help them vindicate their actions and addictions. Those aren't the eyes of the grieving. Those are manipulative eyes.

I don't necessarily think that's true. The mom seems like a nice old lady who means well I think her efforts are just misguided. It's not like Jamie was indoctrinated as a child, Wubby showed that she was a normal person a few years ago while she was still a legal adult. She decided to do this herself even if she was encouraged by her mother. The mother and Jamie also just seem really close.
