Also Catholic churches don't look like that. They're Uniates so the aesthetics are undistinguishable from regular Orthodox churches. There's even a funny story about a ruler entering a Uniate church and became completely mesmerized by the church's beauty. His joy was short lived because after he learned it was a Catholic church he literally bolted out the doors in pure horror. Out of spite he bought the parcel of land right next to it and built there an even bigger and nicer Orthodox church.
Historically, this could have been an RC church/convent, they have had a presence in Romania for some time, but not in that Northern European gothic style, an Austro-Hungarian baroque would have been more appropriate. The Lutherans had most of the gothic buildings! Also, at the time this movie is supposed to be set, the Uniates were just about the most persecuted grouping. The Communists certainly went all in on banning anything with a wiff of loyalty to Rome which they considered to be the source of Fascism. The Orthodox church sort of kept going. Orthodox bishops were begging the Uniates to join them to avoid imprisonment and death, they declined. Uniate aesthetics are different to Orthodox: in Romania you will find stations of the cross, the rosary, the filioque, devotion to Fatima and communion is usually via intinction rather than from the common spoon, often with a mix of leavened and unleavened bread and if you are really lucky, you will hear a guitar. That is the current situation. If you know the history of the Greek College in Rome and their treatment of the prospective Uniate priests, you will know that they were forced to keep the fasting practices of both East and West, they were forced to be fluent in the Roman rite and the best of the trainees were incentivised to leave the Greek rite. Rome really isn't nice to the Uniates.
When people ask what's my favourite movie, I always say it's The Nun. Little do they know it's only because I get to point new theological mistakes and movie clichés every time 💀 This movie actually made me study Christian theology, so thank you Hollywood cliché upsidedown crosses and magical relic of Christ's blood.
I think Directors are only familiar with the following catholic vestments: 1. Red Cardinal stuff 2. Purple stole 3. Cassock That’s it. They use it for EVERY scenario without fail.
I normally have nothing to do with these movies. But because it was you telling about it I thought I would have a view. The statement: "I don't think that demon was summoned to our earthly plane, it was expelled from Hell for being to stupid." made me laugh out loud. God bless you.
One thing bothers me. Was not St. Peter crucified upside down because he was too humble to die like Christ? So an inverted cross signifies St. Peter. Correct?
Yes! You are right. The devil simply can not conquer any christian symbols. 😂 its funny when I see people without religious background wearing the inverted cross thinking its an anti christian symbol or smth.
Well Romania has Dracula and Dracula hates crosses and crosses are Christian and Catholics are Christian and we at Hollywood know nothing about Christianity so let's go with Catholics
In this day and age? I think there's only 1 Catholic monastery left in Romania. Pre-Communist, there were several Greek and Latin Catholic monasteries.
I'm too much of a scaredy cat to watch horror movies and make fun of them any more, but it turns out you do that for me (and better than I ever did). Yay!
That is an entertaining review. Thank you. I was just wondering, why did the priest try to make an exorcism in a barn. I can remember a documentary where a priest told by his teacher to perform such things in a sanctioned space. He told he tried it once in someones home and he very fast saw he made a big mistake and it scared the shit out of him.
The most probable answer is that the moviemakers weren't aware of such a rule. I could explain it in-universe as the boy was very violent and they had to subdue him, so they bound him in chains which were most readily available in the stable, and were too afraid to untie him.
Like, I get that the people making these movies are almost certainly just out for a quick buck, but producing these things 100% encourages people to actual occultism.
Thank you for this video. Way too many of these movies in the conjuring series feel like someone who just heard stories about Christianity trying to make some weird fanfiction. ❤
Yep, the movie was full of dumb stuff but it was fun to watch and scary. Love those Farmiga women, they just have so much presence always a joy to watch.
Next day on the news: A Serbian Man is Found Guilty of Dismembering A Romanian Nun. 😂 Anyway, nice work, Bojan. Keep the movie dismemberment series coming.
Gotta love how they have to add that little "hey see the young Sister with the progressive ideas is the future! Gotta stay hip and reform the church away from those boomers!". Accurate for Catholics, though.
Ironically the case is actually the opposite nowadays. It's the boomers wanting to keep the 60s music and the young people wanting to bring back Latin chant
Orb of Holy Blood: -10 WIS, -10 INT, when used you are mocked mercilessly by your party, owe them free drinks, and lose your next roll in shame and ignominy. 😂
hey Bojan, I read your tweet about the Issue of the icon of the Father, but I want to ask, why would people support the Iconography of the Father, i was taught that there was no Icons of the father because we know not what the father looks like, and in the old testament the Father cant be seen, cause if he is whoever sees him dies
Valac is called "The Marquis of Snakes" and the symbol reflects his influence on the abbey. It's not exactly an uoroboros because it's actually two snakes biting each other's tail (at one point Irene focuses on it and you can see it clearly).
