Join Royal Ballet dancers Letitia Stock, Marcelino Sambe and Claire Calvert live in the studio as they prepare for Peter Wright's production of The Nutcracker under the direction of Ballet Master Christopher Carr.
Find out more at www.roh.org.uk
Pyotr Il’yich Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker score was commissioned by the director of the Russian Imperial Theatres, following the resounding success of The Sleeping Beauty in 1890. Marius Petipa created the scenario, which is based on a fairytale by E.T.A. Hoffmann, and Lev Ivanov provided the choreography. The Nutcracker was first performed in 1892 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg. It initially had a poor reception, but its combination of enchanting choreography and unforgettable music has since made it one of the most loved of all ballets.
In Peter Wright’s classic production for The Royal Ballet, the stage sparkles with theatrical magic - a Christmas tree grows before our eyes, toy soldiers come to life to fight the villainous Mouse King and Clara and the Nutcracker are whisked off to the Kingdom of Sweets on a golden sleigh. Tchaikovsky’s score contains some of ballet’s best-known melodies, from the flurrying Waltz of the Snowflakes to the dream-like Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy - all brilliantly set in Wright’s choreography. Julia Trevelyan Oman’s designs draw upon 19th-century images of Christmas, making this magical production perfect for the festive season.

Does anyone know why the ballet master counts to 12? In the US where I learned to dance, it was all done in counts of 8--is that a British convention, or something else?
@eleanor1298
@eleanor1298 8 лет назад
I'm pretty sure it's because in the music there's 12 beats in the phrase, then it changes. Not exactly sure about that part, but in other parts he counts to 9 or 6 and you can hear that the music changes when he goes back to 1

Many parts of this were just embarrassing and uncomfortable to watch because the grumpy choreographer was mean and harsh. He never smiled, once. If you guys want to put on special TV rehearsals that make audiences love you, and want to come out and see your ballet… I suggest that you present TV- friendly choreographers who are palatable to your audience. The Royal Ballet is my very favorite company in the world! I cannot believe what I just watched. Poor Marcelino! He’s excellent. The pianist was excellent, too… He even was rude her! What are you guys thinking putting this on public TV for all of your fans to watch? I don’t ever want to see this choreographer again. I honestly hope you fire him.

I know this was put on in 2016. But in 2024, when I am watching it on RU-vid, I am horrified to see this Ballet Master and the way that he talks to the dancers. It’s not cool to do that anymore. Things have obviously changed in eight years in the Ballet world. I study with Ballet Austin, in Austin, Texas. I’ve never had a teacher speak to me the way this dude spoke to these incredibly talented dancers. . Thank God that these days the Royal Ballet is putting on TV specials and rehearsals with much kinder, Ballet Mistresses, Masters and choreographers who know how to correct the dancers in a way that makes them feel human and respected. If this is the way Ballet used to be, I’m glad I had no part of it.

It's a fantastic workout both of intrinsic & larger muscles for refinement & toning & of course the cardiovascular benefits! Ballet simply makes me feel better- even if it's just me doing barre & some center at home. I simply can't give it up completely & encourage everyone to get into it/come back to it/continue spreading the joy & love of ballet! 😊❤️🙏

Emma Laird If you really love ballet you can have “the heart of it” ... which is moving in a way that brings you joy [or the emotion you want to express]... and you don’t need to be tall, or wear a leotard for that :). There are lots of RU-vid videos that give workouts, or tips.... or you can even just play a world ballet day class on RU-vid and “follow along” to your level. Dance like no one’s looking :)
