The NWO were a phenomenon as invaders to WCW in the mid 90's. The New World Order featuring Hollywood Hogan, Kevin Nash and Scott Hall threatened to actually take WCW over both in storyline and reality. As WCW was purchased by Vince McMahon and WWE along with the trademarks, we finally witnessed the NWO Black and White invade WWE... And it was a failure from start to finish.

The NWO in 2002 of the WWF/WWE was good for a couple of months until May came than it started to really suck. In July after Kevin Nash got injured a little while after Scott Hall got released from the WWE the NWO was no more it was Dead. I'm always happy to see Hulk Hogan come as the Red and Yellow I love that. RIP Scott Hall!!! 1958-2022

What they missed out on the most was what should have been the most white hot shoot story ever- NWO vs DX. These two factions were the biggest catalysts for the precarity and explosive entertainment of the end of the Monday Night Wars and helped define a portion of late 90's counter culture, between 5 men who were very close friends and were actively trying to put each other out of business. There should have been some very complicated promos about how Nash and Hall had essentially walked out on HHH, HBK, and Xpac, and then how Pac did the same following his 'big brothers' only to come crawling back to them after he got let go. The drama between HHH and XPac over Chyna could have been dug back up, Shawn leaving when he got injured, that Hogan helped put WWE on the map and then tried to destroy it by siding with the enemy. Fighting over Xpac's loyalty, questioning their own friendships. There should have been lines heavily blurred at how much was character and how much the publicly infamous Kliq was airing their dirty laundry on national television. And to really give us that 'poison' feel, they should have finally put their differences aside and reunited as close friends because 'whats done is done, we're back, we're here, and together we're unstoppable'. The shenanigans of the NWO and DX operating together should have run a story of driving both Flair and McMahon insane with their interruption of business. This creates a faction war better than the Invasion angle because those old WCW NWO joiners were still around, WWF loyalists, WCW members who didn't want any part but were being forced to choose sides between company and rebels. But the real life problems robbed us of a dream war which would have gone down in legend.

Well making the N.W.O. look like rookies in the first two hours to the two biggest two star certainly didn't help

I'm really starting to think that the only way the nWo would have worked in 2002 is if they were brought in as babyfaces, only to turn later that year. Also, Meltzer reported around the time when Vince had his "lethal dose of poison" promo that he had little faith in the nWo working because Vince never understood the value of invasion angles. He doesn't get why somebody being from outside WWF would raise their stock.

2 sides to every story and you left out the Hall and Nash version of the finish being changed from Hall winning to Austin winning. Hall only decided to drink after he was told the finish was changing the night before WM X8. He was very upset and said he'd meet Nash and Hogan at bar after he was told. He'd been sober before that. Hall felt he had been lied to. They had agreed to finish months prior. He wanted nWo work and felt they didn't want to do business. And if you look at it from all all angles it makes no sense to beat Hall imo. WWF neutered nWo in 6 weeks. A big money investment and they sabotaged it. Yet nWo still makes company money to this day. Imagine if they booked it to its fullest potential.

Nice of you to do that Scott Hall memory thing. Good stuff. I loved the Monday war stuff. I wish there was a way organized where you could watch that unfold the way it did at that time. I know I missed a lot of that. I love too how the internet turned the whole real aspect of it out and kaybabe blown is just a normal thing.

nWo could have worked had Vince not been so obsessed with burying WCW talent and factions. Look at Stings treatment. He could have been a huge deal for WWE. His charisma and ability to reinvent himself. But Vince's ego wouldn't allow it.

I just don’t like the word FAILURE being used. Vince killed it. Vince never was going to push the nWo. It did still have life, but when it showed that Hogan, Hall & Nash had more fans than the WWF two main faces The Rock and Stone Cold they as Vince wasn’t gonna push something he didnt create over his own properties.

This was almost as bad as the WCW invasion angle… Stevie Ray once talked about how the Ultimate Warrior flopped in WCW because they were trying to capitalize on something that had already been done & ran it’s course, and how the people weren’t buying into it. I feel the same way about the nWo in WCW…

As cool as it was to see them in the ring kicking off the PPV, it doesn't make sense to do that. Save them for the main event and have them come through the crowd and destroy Austin. Maybe one of them like Hall could cut a quick promo in the crowd or something.

the 3 main things were scott hall personal issues kevin nash's injuries and hogan face turn. those were the main nwo killer. Not that those weren't the only things. Rock vs hogan was good

You can't really call the nwo in wwe a failure it disbanded before it ever even had a chance.
@pricepostingandsaulposting849
WWE just had to wait 1 year until they could get the main roster guys who were signed to warner contracts. They could have integrated the wcw contract guys earlier and had them conflicted as to which side they should be on. But no Vince absolutely flopped it
@OldChanCharlie
@OldChanCharlie Год назад
The nwo was washed at that point. They hardly wrestled at the end of their wcw tenures. They would just interfere in on going matches and cut snooze fest promos. Meanwhile, Austin and the rock were consistently wrestling and fantastic on the mic.

Like when the first incarnation of the nwo was former wwf guys back in wcw (before wcw stars like giant and bagwell joined) i firmly believe that the wwe version should have had former wcw guys but when shawn micheals joined their incarnation i already knew that something was going to be amiss in my opinion. But regardless, wwe should have known from the get go that it wasn't going to work

700lbs Andre The Giant at WrestleMania 3!? I thought Andre weighed 1700lbs when Hogan slammed him at WrestleMania 3 tearing all his muscles and breaking 95% of his bones into dust! I’m sure that’s what happened

Stone Cold's interview is why people stopped taking Pro Wrestling seriously. In a real fight if you get your ass beat beat by someone that you needed a win against you do lose credibility. Because you lost what made you look like a threat. NWO lost all steam after WrestleMania. Then after Hogan left they tried to get the B team back together. It was all downhill at that point.

I think nWo was working in WWE. However i think WWE didn't like Hogan being cheered and the Rock, their 2nd biggest creation getting boo'd over a WCW creation. I also think Vince, Stone Cold and others were afraid it would happen, had he stepped in the ring one on one with Hogan. They turned Hogan babyface and back to red & yellow real quick.

To me it seems like if you didn't start with WWE they don't want you any outside talent that comes along is almost always given a short push then jobbed out if they're lucky after the invasion I hoped to see the biggest WCW/ecw stars mixed into wwes existing roster but they pretty well ignored the big named or made jokes of them like booker t or tazz they never used any of them properly after winning the invasion angle WWE coulda put on dream matches for the next year plus but didn't even sign most of the potential talent such a waste

I disagree it was the wrong time... (fresh off the invasion angle, we'd been hungry as hell for actual WCW stars to appear...) but I agree it was mishandled MASSIVELY. Really showed how overrated Vince could be sometimes. And how much he let his ego get in the way of what could have been an incredible angle, and great money maker for him. He really didn't have a clue. The main mistake was turning Hogan face. Yes the crowd were cheering him, but don't forget, they cheered him in WCW too. That was the beauty of the group, they were the badguys people loved to hate! WWE should have let the group thrive on the back of HIS popularity, then turned him face eventually (maybe when HBK joined, setting up their eventual feud which Michaels was heel anyway). There was so much more cool stuff they could have done before they pulled the plug, like having Hogan win the WWE title and spraypainting it like the old WCW one, debuting Bischoff as part of the group, put Vince through a table like they did with Eric, maybe even HHH joining it and turning it into a more Kliq-based thing, with WWE finally taking ownership of it... hell, call it the nWX or something lol I dont know I'm just spitballing here

I believe he wanted to make them look bad/weak because they are from wcw and could run wcw but in the superior company wwe that was not gonna fly vince wanted to show the audience how he better his guys were than wcw he really did it to all the wcw talent...Goldberg had a good run in wwe but he was nothing like wcw Goldberg

Man Scott kept going with that last WWE run and put a bunch of people over. Seems like he really was a good dude, even while he was struggling. Anyway, until I rewatched this whole story angle, I remembered it being way better than it was But it's really just because I used to be a huge WCW mark. And Hollywood Hogan and the NWO were my favorite. Specifically the Hollywood Hulk Hogan rendition of his character was my first favorite wrestler and got me into watching So I was beyond excited to see them return, and especially for it to just be the original Three And I did not want to see Hulk Hogan in the red and yellow LOL Heel Hogan was still a character that I cheered. And ultimately preferred Although his smackdown run was basically still taking the Hollywood version of that character, but embracing the baby face role The man everything that happened after WrestleMania 18 with the NWO was just pure garbage Although it'd be fair I don't think Hall and Austin had a terrible match That stunner oversell is awesome I think it's fine that Scott Hall didn't go over Essentially WrestleMania 18 should have just put an end to the NWO storyline all together by having them lose the matches No matter what Scott Hall's personal issues would have gotten in the way, but I would have pushed him and Kevin Nash as their own individual characters after wm18 Hell if everybody was so excited to see Hogan return to the red and yellow, you probably could have brought back razor ramon!
