OUTDATED: Whoops the article we based our research off of was from 2021 and since then the MTA changed their plans with the map. Regardless, if they did make the change how would you feel about it? Comment below to let us know!

Actually, you are not off. The 'new' maps are the paper maps that are currently mounted on the walls of most stations. They are not displayed on the digital screens nor given out to the public.

The main idea of the current map was that it had geographical locations that most NYrs use to navigate the city. The borough shapes are familiar as are the locations of points of interest within a borough. That was the problem with this new map when it was rejected in the 1970s. Ppl had trouble navigating because of the unfamiliarity of the shapes and station locations. NYC is only city with mass transit where the customers use the geographically dominant features to travel in the system.

The "new" map isn't really new, as it is a nod to the Massimo Vignelli map that debut in 1972 when colors were first assigned to subway lines, and sinage system wide went to a new font.

Agreed. And while Vignelli was a world-class designer, his subway map was an abject failure. It omitted about every possible landmark and reference point possible in favor of a "clean" look. It's nice enough to have a simplified view of the stations, but if you have no idea where you'll be if you exit the subway at one of those stations, what good is it? I've always maintained that the NYC subway map is most beneficial for tourists and newbies to the city. Ask anyone who's lived in NYC for 5+ years about any station or line, and we've got the whole thing memorized. But for anyone else whose knowledge of the city is limited, they're going to want additional wayfinding and landmarks on the map. These "clean" diagrams are severely lacking in that regard, and that's what made the current subway map design superior to the diagrams used in other cities.

As a tourist that used the NYC subway, trust me, I wasn't looking at map for landmarks. If I wanted to get somewhere, I use Google Maps for directions and use the map to simply follow the lines.

This is very similar to the Vignelli map, only with the current color scheme of colors being assigned to trunk lines, rather than to individual train routes. The result is parallel lines of the same color on many routes. They've been using this for a while for "Weekender" maps. The color scheme used on the original Vignelli map actually dates to November 1967, when the Chrystie Street Connection opened.

@@yellowpsychopath In 1967, Google and their infamous maps didn't yet exist. Yes, we now have additional tools at our disposal, but 50 years ago, it was unrealistic to expect tourists to have and consult multiple maps for each journey.

as a new yorker, i'm really attached to the old map since i grew up with it and there's a charm to the messiness of it. the new map feels overly simplistic with all of the 45 and 90 degree angles, and some of the labels like Hoyt-Schermerhorn are unclear which station it corresponds to (can see at 1:33). but i do agree that besides the actual subway lines, most of the stuff on the map like street names and other ferries are irrelevant since you could use google maps for those, and i agree that the black and white dots aren't as intuitive as the multiple lines.

I feel like people more and more use maps on their phone now anyway. Maybe I'm wrong but I find myself more often looking at Google Maps with the transit layer turned on. But tourists definitely still use the posted maps in the stations and the trains.

In my opinion, the A Line should just go to the Rockaways while the C Line should be extended to Lefferts Blvd.

That’s always made a lot of sense to me. Ultimately the MTA does this because the Lefferts Blvd section of the A train has very low volume of passengers.

Counterpoint: re-brand the Ozone Park branch and bring back the K train to be a clear indicator of what trains are going to Ozone Park. Extending the local C even further is not a winner.

I've always found maps like this (based on the London tube map) more confusing, because they don't give much hint as to what's on the surface. One thing I really liked about the old NYC subway map was that major streets were shown. I found this especially useful in the outer boroughs, where the streets often aren't square.

I find the current NYC subway map more confusing than a diagram - and, having thought deeply about it, it is not because it is a map and concerned about conforming to the surface, but because it isn't anywhere near as bothered about explaining the subway as it is about the surface! As an example, the Green Line makes sure to have a little wiggle north of Grand Central as it moves a tiny 500ft east to run under Park rather than Lexington - increased cognitive load due to added complication thanks to an obsession with the surface. And the Green Line is one line on the map - not the two pairs of tracks (local and express) or the three services (4/5/6), with different stations served by them - increased cognitive load due to over-simplification of the subway, collapsing down trunks into one line (and adding the clutter of all those little letters and numbers next to stations). The Park-Lexington shuffle would be justifiable if there was the same devotion to detail when it comes to subway network clarity as street network compliance. The issue with the current map is that there isn't and so those not from NYC look at the map, struggle to understand it, and view the problem as caring too much about the surface, when it's really about caring too little about explaining the network clearly. The NYC Subway is one of the most complex in the world to navigate - its map really needs to make an effort to lay out the network clearly to those unfamiliar about it. The current map doesn't do this - failing at what should be its primary task. The NYC surface is one of the easiest global cities to navigate thanks to most of the city being covered by logical, numerical grids - hence why, to the outsider, the surface element of the NYC map seems even more useless. However, the simple-to-navigate surface is why NYers want the subway map tied to the street network - their mental map of the city is based on the road network. The subway network is also pretty tied to the road network, with most lines following roads. The current map's concern about this is reasonable due to this and a diagram isn't the solution the MTA should be looking for - it may get the primary task done, but at the expense of important secondary information. --- Meanwhile in London, while the tube is complex and confusing, the streets are far more so, and so trying to tie the railways to roads on the map makes things far less easy to understand as (other than taxi drivers who spend three years learning the street network!) no one has a mental map of the city based mostly on roads - the tube diagram is far more prevalent as a mental map of where places are in the city. Plus the tube lines mostly are not tied to roads (certainly, especially the earlier lines, the tube runs under roads in London, but most of the roads only last a couple of stops) so its really not helpful to have them shaping the map.

TIL i learned that the "bauhaus" design that i now love so much (or at least the name). i could make an artstyle based off it and the swiss design that i was always obsessed w/ especially on the nyc subway (ty chatgpt for making me know the name of it too)

Ugh HATE this new map. New York is a geography-based city. People navigate by street and landmass. You lose all perspective of borough size in relation to subways with this map. NYC tried this decades ago and people hated it

The big divide here seems to be whether the map should cater to locals or tourists. The current map aids locals who understand the shape of the city but may not be familiar with every possible commute. The new map seems balanced in favor of visitors who don't know or need to know the layout of the city but only how to get from a few key points to a few other key points

WTF are you talking about??? A subway map is supposed to detail the subway lines not landmass. This map reverts back to the map of the 1970s where each line and it's station stops are detailed clearly

The transit map is a tool to clearly show stops and transfers. The new map is a more geographically accurate compromise compared to other major cities. The current map is a nightmare for anyone who didn't grow up with the format.

IT’S ABOUT DAMN TIME. The current map is a wildly confusing mess that tries to both be geographically accurate and a good subway diagram and fails miserably at both. The fact that the current map doesn’t do a good job of explaining one of the most crucial and unique elements of the system, local and express services and what stops where, means it should have been canned ages ago. The map was a product of its time, back before we all had GPS navigation in our pockets, when the subway and city were so run down and crime-ridden that it was important to know close to exactly where you were. The rest of the world has realized the diagrams are the superior option when designing a subway map, it’s about time NYC got on board as well.

I like the 1,2,3 thing, but I like the lines more without all of the angles, I think it is much more legible when they go smoothly.

Crabby New Yorker here, leave it alone! The new map messes up the geography, and as others have said, this has been done and rejected before. MTA, doing it their way. 😄

I like both. The new London-style one emphasises connections, the old one, locations. Both are very useful to me as a tourist to NYC. Although London Underground pioneered this style of map, I always thought London would benefit from having an NYC style map alongside it, so tourists won’t find themselves making unnecessary connections; there are many instances where 2 stations look far apart but are actually a 2 minute walk away.

Underground stops tend to have a lot of information in other forms all around the stations, from a map of the nearby streets and landmarks next to the wider tube map as well as pamphlets and signs

Unlike European cities... NYC is a Grid iron... No one is going to think that 7th street is 100 metres walk from 128th street. There are 'walking distance' downloadable versions of the TfL Tube map that gives the slow tourist walking distance between stations. (Locals walk at 4 to 5x the pace of tourists)

We’ll see how the city responds to it. In the 70s, the subway tried to make this change, and New Yorkers despised it so much that they changed it back a few years later. However, perhaps nowadays it’s different. Me personally, I almost never refer to the map anymore other than to see how many stops are left until the stop I need to get off at. Apps like Transit and Citymapper are more and more widely used, and provide much better information. So perhaps New Yorkers won’t notice the change as much this time.

The map is just a lot less important with Google Maps and everyone having a smartphone. The subway is so well integrated to streets and even exits that I don’t think we need detailed maps anymore…just a clear way to navigate around the subway when you’re on it. The new map makes a lot more sense in the age of smartphones vs in the 70s when it was first introduced. I can see why this was so confusing to many back then. I also wonder if the MTA is considering future proofing with the new map: the new trains have these maps digitized, so I wonder if they can easily toggle the map and adjust during weekend or late night service with this new layout since all the lines are separated. That would be a HUGE help when trying to figure out what is actually in service.

Google maps is best when you have some knowledge of the system already and want to know what routes are suggested based on time. I do recommend people learn the subway first.

It looks to me like a step back to the 1970’s. The look of the lines on the new map is very similar to the map in those days. I thought the current format was an improvement because it gave a better idea when different lines actually go.

I personally like the old map better. Locals don't need the map in most of the occasions. But tourists do. Having the streets on it is much more efficient for them.

The old one was very handy for tourists as it also doubled as a (rough) city map, so anyone not familiar with each station and street could get a way better understanding what's the right station to pick. Also, not only the the ferries are missing, but also PATH (I know, it's still there, but so faint, one really has to know where to look. Also, many oddities of the NYC network are no longer easy visible. Last but not least, to get room for Manhattan lines, Brooklyn has shrunk way below its relative size, giving a false impression of being small. I'm not sure, but I think I have seen not long ago a different version without those irritations. PATH in visible colours and 1&2&3 as two lines (1 and 2&3) and better over all orientation.

First hearing about this BUT this 'new' design is not really new, it is the old 1972 Vignelli design used before. There has been debate on which design is better.

Million times BETTER! It is now more like the rest of world with circuit board style (evenly spaced)... instead of geographic. People, local and tourist, know they need to go to abc, xyz station. This new map is easy to read, easy on the eyes, and just lacking the Old version CLUTTER. They could add the ferries... that could be a version 2.1 update next year once this one has had time to settle into the mindset of passengers.

Where has this actually been announced? They were doing a pilot of using this map along with the current official map in some stations (and there's an out of date Gizmodo piece from 2 years ago. It's also not a new map. An update to the 70s Vignelli map.

More a schematic diagram, and less a true map. But that's quite normal these days and originates from the first London Underground Map designed by Harry Beck in 1931. There is actually a New York Subway Map in the Style of the London Underground Map (Google to see) which looks pretty good to me, but misses out important stuff like the 1,2,3 line different stopping pattern.

I guess since the station names are the street names it doesnt really matter? Even when its a named station like Penn or Columbus Circle its always followed by the street name anyway - Penn Stn-34th, Columbus Circle-59th st. Do the overlapping lines show which level theyre on? That's really helpful, cant tell how many times ive been confused about which level I need to be on for which subway - esp at times sq.

Yeah, the street names in the station name help. As for platforms, I don’t think the map has any platform info, so you’ll still have to rely on the signage you see at the station. As for the street grid, having the street grid on the map can be useful for figuring out where to go once you leave the station, especially in areas with irregular street grids. (Still though, not entirely necessary since everyone has a gps in their pocket, we could also supplement this by including local maps at stations)

Who the hell even looks at Maps anymore I just use my phone. The Map app on your phone has everything you need to know just put in where you want to go and it tells you step by step what subway line and how many stops and where to get off even shows you where to exit the station and walking directions from there.

The old map, while okay, looks like a pile of spaghetti. This new map is quite the improvement, though I guess it could be oversimplified. Though, a railway map is made for the rails, and the other was a bit too over complicated in some areas.

Definitely dislike it, way less useful than the one where you can see walking distance. But, like others have said, I've lived here a long time and use my phone if I need to navigate anyways. And arguably this one just looks a little nicer as a piece of art, so that's sort of a pro

The new map is more prob clearer and cleaner in its approach to be more simple but more easier to read but I don’t like it at all. I think they really think this might help tourists but I will tell you many tourists I’ve asked prefer the old than this new map and I think this new map is trash

They should adopt a purely geographic map instead of the (old) mixed one. I'm not a fan of this pure train station map. Lack of geographic features is like, a lack of soul? No major streets and no other parks except 5? Of them. No airport info either. When you think of a map of NYC you think of the current subway map. They need a geographically accurate one. And run with it.

For a city that relies so much on walking and understanding how far everything is by streets, this map is shit. As people use google maps more and more these warped diagrams, because its really more an electrical diagram transposed onto a map, it just makes scaling the city harder. Such as train times. I know looking at the A line that its long but on the new map it looks shorter and gives a false sense of how quick the trip will be. You can warp a map too much.

I think they need to bring back the 9 but as a rush hour express. Skipping all the stations between 96 and 168 streets. It would have to run through the platforms without stopping at 145 st (southbound only) and 157st. But all other stations including northbound through 145 st it can use the express track. It could also run express between ruckman street and van courtlandt park

I disagree. The background information of just a few streets tells you how the grid is oriented in that area. The design obsession of making every subway map copy the London Tube with its 45 degree angles just isn't a simplification in American cities because American cities have a street grid so abstracting away the street information isn't a simplification because its already simple.
