It has been revered as the symbol of fortitude, wisdom, perseverance, and power of resistance. Its life cycle comprises almost 10 human life spans and provides space for more than 500 different species of animals and plants. It is the tree of trees: the oak tree.

I've long told friends that during their lifetime everybody ought to plant at least one forest giant somewhere that will allow it to thrive and endure.

I was trying to imagine how many old oaks and other hard wood trees were used to build ships of all kinds throughout history, trees were instrumental in the development of civilization, not to mention trees replenish the oxygen we breath….

I have a book SOMEWHERE that came out maybe 30 years ago or so on building the HMS Thunderer. A British 74 gun Warship of the 1700s. They describe how many trees went into its construction. The British actually grew oaks to be harvested decades later for these ships. They created the most valuable oak lumber called "compass timbers" by hanging weights from the oak limbs so they grew in an arc. These were used in the prow of the ship and other places where curved oak timbers were needed. Fascinating book. May be out of print.

It takes approximately 2000 150 to 200 years old oak trees to build a war ship. After the 1807 bombardment of Copenhagen by the brits, the King ordered as many oak trees as possible to be planted. They are ready aboutnow, but the danish navy haven’t started chopping down trees yet.

@@kasperkjrsgaard1447 I guess this was another inducement to switch to steel ships. (?)
@tomjohn8733

@@kasperkjrsgaard1447 interesting, trees obviously played an important role in history, the serious deforestation to build the fleets of old, the availability of suitable trees to replace those lost either thru warfare or storms etc…the mid East use to be heavily forested, but time turned it into deserts, desertification, cutting down tree drys up the air, speeds up the process, but oh, those magnificent sailing vessels of old powered only by wind, currents, tides etc….
@kasperkjrsgaard1447
@kasperkjrsgaard1447 2 года назад
@@thomaszaccone3960 i would presume so. I’ve read that at the 1807 attack the british fleet sailed away with the danish naval ships they represented a “value” of approximately 90.000 oak trees. So Denmark was pretty much deforrested then. There was hardly trees enough to build a fishing vessel.

Cutting that beautiful 150 yr Oak tree is hard to watch. Humanity will be punished for their irresponsible action. When a tree is felled, many living creatures die and nature is disturbed. In our human society age has no respect. That tree survived 150 years in such adverse condition, only to be cut by human for someone comfy furniture. It will be a curse of that oak tree that shall come to haunt.

i agree and disagree at the same time, wood actually is the most ecological of resources we can use, if you compare it with plastics (petrochemical product) or metals you can clearly see the impact of those is many times as severe.. i do think it's about time ALL old growth forests should enjoy permanent protection as indeed they are the roots of local, sometimes very rich, ecosystems..

It's a plantation tree, planted for that specific purpose: to harvest. It is a sustainable industry that keeps the illegal logging industry out of the natural forests.

Unfortunately from your perspective your none sense may look amazing like magic, but for an artist who is trained to see in multiple dimensions it looks like a child that was really feeling himself is now getting frustrated because no one else feels that way.
