With Thingol’s death, Melian’s power is withdrawn from the forests. She sends word to Beren and Lúthien before returning to Valinor, to the gardens of Lórien, to mourn. The host of Dwarves arrives and plunders Menegroth. Mablung is killed, and the Simlaril is taken.

I feel so bad for Melian. Thingol and Melian's love empowered each other: just as Thingol and the Sindar were elevated by Melian, so was Melian, originally a humble Maia of Lorien, uplifted to have amazing power over the physical world (similar to how Manwë and Varda empowered each other). And thus, when Thingol died, Melian's power was extinguished and even her ability to remain anchored to the mortal world removed. The poor thing couldn't do anything for her citizens.

Yes, if the three Silmarils are returned to the Valar, Yavanna may be able to rekindle the Two Trees. Just as Sauron had his One Ring, and Morgoth had his "Ring" (the whole Earth), I like to think of the Two Trees as like the Valar's "Ring", the physical embodiment of their power, an eternal spiritual power plant of sorts. Without it, while the Elves may find refuge from Morgoth's planetary poison in the presence of the Valar, the Valar have no renewable resource anymore...they will ultimately grow weary with the passing of ten thousand millennia.
