That was the best cover version of a Neil Young classic that I have heard. I have heard countless others by famous artists, but this is the best. The guitar sound was tremendous. Thanks for uncovering this lost rendition
Wow first time I heard this.... amazing cover, I love it. The Odds are one of Canada's golden treasures that belong in the ranks with BTO, Cummings, Stampeders, BNL, Blue Rodeo and most recently the Sheepdogs. True, wholesome Canadian music that have that deep roots sound! Thank you for sharing.
if you had asked me in 1996 who the next world-renowned pop band was going to be, I would have said The Odds... Nobody deserved global recognition more, in my opinion.
I love how the guitars "rev up" while the drummer tapes things down, then the explosion of sound. Friggin' awesome. Never heard of this group until recently heard "Heterosexual Man" on Sirius.
I saw them twice in Portland, Oregon back in the 70s. Once alongside The Cowboys at The Long Goodbye, and once somewhere else. I don't remember. Now I have four Odds CDs that get played when I'm nostalgic. Great band! It was the 70s...
For me, CG is a desert island disc. I’ve listened to the original and live versions countless times. I’ve listened to hundreds of covers. I have a theory about certain kind of perfect songwriting and CG, for me, is one of those rare gems that can be performed on virtually any combination of instruments and, if performed competently on those instruments, it will still sound fuckin’ great! This band, Odds, really, really did the song and Mr. Young proud. They got it all just right - most importantly the component of “joy” so rarely found in NY’s work. I’m envious of their ability to produce this for the world. I wish them the very best! One Question: I swear they’re singing “Ma” in the fantastic bridge (as in “Ma, send me money”). I’ve sang “Ma” my entire life, only recently seeing lyric sites telling me the word is “Pa.” WTF? It feels like he’d match “M” in “Ma” with “money.” Can someone from The Odds tell me what they’re singing (I could be wrong)? Anyone else been singing “Ma” all this time or am I a singular Doof?
One of my favorites in my cover bands for years.. no matter what you felt like.. this one always got my blood going.. Whatever instrument didn’t show up I could cover it.. bass, drums 6 banger and vocals .. harmony or melody.. you guys really nailed it.. I’m happy to see the younger gen taking this song seriously enough to keep it faithful.. made me want to strap it on and go.. thank you.. great job
Damn good cover. And for anyone whoever ragged on the one note solo by Neil, I submit it was only a perfect support for the awesome bass and the organic chord progression.
