Not all businesses sectors can. Real estate offices have closings at their business. Manufacturing can’t be done from home and people on the office side, like engineers, need to be onsite. I’m a chemist who’s a manager in an environmental testing lab. Can’t do testing in your home kitchen and as a manager I need to be onsite to offer guidance on problems that arise along with doing a variety of tasks related to get results to a client that can only be done in the office because it contains classified information. What about engineering firms that does classified work for the government? That information can’t be done from home. Every retail store has an office to conduct work that responds to needs that arise throughout the day. How do they work from home? Office staff at a doctor’s office can’t work from home. How does a receptionist check in patients remotely or update patient information or answer billing information? HIPPA laws don’t allow patient information to leave an office or be used on a ordinary internet system. Schools can’t permanently work from home. Courts can’t continue to only perform urgent tasks. Grand juries have to meet. Many criminal cases haven’t been able to move forward for this reason. The FBI, CIA and Intel community can’t work from home. Nor can the other agencies like Treasury or State Department.

@@deeinfl5600 Classified info does travel in the internet, some of them even can be leaked from office (employee memorizing things at last stance). The limits are on regulations. I can share a result with a patient and do the check in from home without any info being shared externally. We already have a ton of digital auth tools, I can sign an official document and it's recognized by the government. Some places does voting by blockchain (congress in my country is voting from home). Soon a lot of positions will be replaced by robots, IoT and ML can do wonders in monitoring and predicting failures in factories for example.

swegweg erg Today, there are more scientists, more funding for science, and more scientific papers published than ever before. The NIH gave over $42B in scientific grants in 2019 for a near record high. More research papers have been published in the US in the past 4 years than any time in the US. While working from home is cheaper for companies, salaries are going to go down for employees. Zuckerberg has already made that announcement for Facebook. Salaries for employees working only remotely will be based on where they will be living. This will eventually trend across the country in all sectors. He said that in a video conference on May 23. He said, quite accurately, people will get a $178,000 salary and move to a rural location where cost of living is significantly lower. Real estate agents are already seeing this trend in the shutdowns in much of the mid west. People are buying homes sight unseen from major cities making high salaries who are now going to be working from permanently home as a result of the pandemic. Also knowing the government they will find a way to justify a new tax for those working from home eventually.

Matheus Santos I can’t email or use WiFi from Comcast for classified information between my company and the government entity which the businesses contracts with. HIPPA laws are very specific on how information is stored and what can be viewed in patient portals. It requires very specific authentication requirements and cyber security. Through the first half of June of 2019, 25 million patient records have already been breached. Many of these breaches have been caused by hackers, who sell patient records on the black market and dark web. This is why I never use them. AI will be a wave in the future but engineers will still need to be onsite to make real time changes and decisions. False alarms occur regularly and actual inspections need to occur to override the problem or in the case of a problem come up with a solution to address the issue. I wouldn’t want a computer to make the sole decision at a nuclear reactor or NASA while astronauts are in space.

The future is remote working. Me and my entire team have been working from since February. Nobody said that are missing office. We all DO miss interacting with each other, having lunch together, and laugh. But generally everybody is admitting they are more relaxed and more productive working from home. My company has seen a rise in productivity since the quarantine began and everyone was allowed to work from home. I see people, working from their cabins or trailers in north Wisconsin. Working from home is also allowing them to spend more time with their kids/family and run chores/errands in between giving them more time for other activities. I am happy working from home and all my team members are also happy to work from home.

And I don't have a whole lot to do with the other departments that are located there (I have a traveling job). Over the last year, working from home has been a fantastic change of pace. I can go out and jog before work, eat breakfast and then start immediately, wearing casual clothes most of the time and not having to commute to work. I don't have to hear loud officemates right nearby when I'm on the phone. And I work more productively. It's been great.

Ronaldo Rivers it’s a good time to work in cybersecurity. My company is a charity with a significant portion of the staff being based on site due to the nature of their work, but the vast majority of the office based staff pivoted to working remotely, with those of us in IT Operations vastly accelerating all the programs and systems we had in the works to enable that to happen securely in a variety of ways, including people using whatever equipment they already had at home, with safety controls in place to protect company data, even if we don’t control the machines themselves the way we would do in a normal enterprise network based in an office. There’s a lot of technology out there to facilitate good cybersecurity for remote working now, and it’s a great opportunity to put it into practice.

As you say, it is likely to be too soon to determine what the future holds, but the here and now has shown that to get people back in the office, positive changes have to be made. Whether this is one way systems, social distancing, or temperature checks, having protocols in place to make employees feel safe and to create an efficient environment is essential. Some of the measures we have helped companies with is installing social distancing screens and hands free sanitizer pumps.

Better ventilation could include air to be recycled going through pipes with highly reflective interiors that have UVC lighting to destroy viruses and bacteria in the air while inside the piping.

By recent office behaviour, staff generally keep it on when talking to a colleague, or if there's someone working on the 2M perimeter. Take it off if there nobody close by, or while speaking on the phone, and certainly while sipping from one's own mug or snacking. Plus, when walking out to a balcony or outdoor terrace for a smoke, or just a break.

This pandemic should be making everyone live their lives mainly outdoors, with social distancing. When people have no alternative to working in office buildings, they should be making every room vent to the outside directly, with a cross-breeze, and no central air at all.

Only corporate office are not the ones that everyone should be focused on. Workplaces also include factories, door to door service etc. Any kind of heavy lifting/ other such works which require more than 1 person is quite common- those are the really tough spaces to maintain physical distancing. People must delve into such practical problems to solve them- not just corporate offices.

I don't know what you thought that inspirational music would be doing, but it certainly doesn't leave me in aw for those people explaining their bad office designs as the next big thing. I don't need newly designed tables that you can somehow move to look into every possible direction. As far as I remember tables already have that feature.
