Someone else said this, but I think it's so true. The original was raw, powerful, angry, and in your face. Just like grief is when it first hits. This version is what happens to that grief over time. It's still powerful, just not as raw or angry. Maybe there's even the chance to slip in a smile beside the tears at a happy memory along with the grief. I wouldn't suggest tampering with great songs, but this version is just a perfect way to capture how grief changes and makes me wonder if Dexter doesn't also have a PhD in feelings!

Angry? Gone Away was never an angry song. It's not even a punk rock song. It's still rock music, but not really punk, and it certainly isn't angry. It's about missing someone dearly.

Very well said, David. I have the same experience when my Daddy passed away. First, I was angry, cause it felt unfair, I cried, I struggled. Over the years, the anger is not there as much, but the grief is still in me, even tho we very often laugh when we remind ourselves of those great memories Daddy gave to all of us. But here and there, especially when something reminds us what happened, it is still powerful. And it is absolutely okay. I think we should talk about those emotions, sing about them, write about them, and use songs like this one as a part of our therapy or "ventilation". Just don't deny it. :)

This song came out right after one of my closet friends killed herself. It helped me through a really dark time in my life. This is such a beautiful rendition of an already amazing song. Strong "mad world" vibes. Original by tears for fears was very uptempo, just like offspring's original. This version is very reminiscent of Gary Jules version.

I lost my grandfather on my birthday when I turned 9 years old. Listening to this version of the song reminds me how I was calling his name up in the sky. He will always be in my heart and looking down at me and watching over me.

You guys played this on the piano last night in Phoenix and it was phenomenal. Images of every person that I ever truly cared for that died flashed thru my mind during that song. My Niece Nicole who turned me on to the Offsprings album Smash. Suddenly passed away @ age 21 of a massive heart attack and left this world and us with a baby boy 9 mo's old he's soon to be 17!!!! Any way This song's lyrics hit's me like a Led Simi Truck doing a Buck30!!!! Both the Original n this version. I know Dexter wanted to do this version cuz He and the Band knows how personal this song is to sooooooo many Offspring fans. Thank you Dex n the Band. Cheers.

I saw you guys back in 1999 just before my Grandfather passed, and it's been very hard to get through this song without breaking down for the last 22 years. Now my best friend passed away just over a month ago and you guys release this version. What really got me is that there's a raven in this video - My best friend did his studio work under the name Black Rock Raven, and I got that logo tattooed on me after he passed. He loved you guys too. His last slipmat on his turntable was the one from the Conspiracy of One vinyl pre-order pack.

I like this version and it is beautiful but there is just something so strong about the pain heard in the original. It is gut wrenching, almost angry. This is when you start bawling after the anger leaves. Beautiful.

The original is when the grief is fresh and you can't cry because it's just too strong. You have to scream it out instead. Rage at the unfairness of it all. This is years later when the grief is old and settled, no less powerful but easier to process. Acceptance instead of bargaining and denial.

This version almost sounds like Mad World by Tears for Fears. The original was raw, rough and wild and the quiet desperation of grief. As someone else said, this version is the decades later of filtered pain. People you love never 'go away' even when they are gone.
