This song is a textbook example of good songwritting. Every 4 measures the storytelling from the lyrics goes deeper and deeper, avoids sounding redundant and keeps adding tension for the chorus to be expected and it hits just on time so the message from it hits harder each time and the melodic elements like the bass line, the guitar solos and riffs are simple and effective, very well implemented.

I used to like this song in my teens because it sounded sick and catchy, now I'm 35 and it gives me goosebumps. when your young and have the whole world Infront you don't realise the kind of shit you're going to see or fall into, how fast people around you change, falling into the pits and ruts of life sometimes never to be seen again. This song has a whole new feeling to me now, it still sounds sick, it's just more morose.

This, and “Time of Your Life” are the two best bittersweet pop punk songs about growing up. “Kids” is a reflective anthem about adult life hitting you hard after the simple happiness of youth, and “Time” is more about looking ahead and embracing change. One is regretful, the other hopeful. Both great.
