The Winchester 1897 was not only one of the most iconic pump actions ever built, it was also the first ever successful combat shotgun.
I have hankered after a later mode for years, (mostly to go and slam fire at clays) but looking over this early Damascus edition at Holts Auction was still a treat.

Fell in love with the 97 when my father gave me one as a Christmas gift he picked up at a pawn shop for $225 years ago. Recently added a holy grail piece to my collection in the form of a Cody Museum lettered 97 “Trap Gun” also called a Black Diamond. One day I’ll have a Trench Gun to sit alongside it!

The 1893 is a stronger gun in terms of receiver but its unsafe as hell,and the 93 was redesigned and released as the model 1897. And yes these guns are old but if the action is tight and the barrel is good its no problem shooting it with normal (lead only) 12g shells.

1897s are still very affordable in the US. I picked up one made in 1929 for $300 just four years ago.

First time I pumped one of those it peeled the skin right off the top of my thumb. I remember someone describing the action of it as a gun that that looks like it falls all apart on the backstroke and miraculously goes back together on the front stroke. Or at least something to that effect.

Was just given a model 1897 made in 1911 takedown 12 gauge, 26 in barrel. Looks Almost Identical to the gun he has. I do wonder what it's worth? It's such an amazing gun

I have one of these that I obtained from my wife’s uncle.It was made in 1900 and has a 30 inch barrel.When I had it restricted to 3 shots in 1989 I also had it re proofed as it was only black powder and it came back proofed as a 2and three quarter inch magnum and I had it bored out to half choke.It does cause some interest when I occasionally take it clay shooting.

John you touched on something that's pretty interesting. Winchester for a long time would pretty much build any number of their firearms how the purchaser wanted. The buyer would for lack of a better term "check the boxes" and pay their money. Winchester would then just build it as a special order piece. I have a model 21 that falls into that area. It's also one of the reasons some people concentrate on collecting particular Winchester firearms. Depending on the serial number the Cody Firearms Museum may have the build sheet for that particular 97. They got a decent number of the factory records but by no means all.

I can't believe that it took me this long to find this video! I have my great, great grandfather's 1905, 16ga. He purchased it in Washington State at a general store on the peninsula. (We think Roslyn). I am gifting it to my Godson for his 30th birthday. He was actually in the Mounted Calvary in Fort Hood Texas. Great to know the history of this gun will be appreciated.

I regret to inform you that if the shotgun was purchased in Roslyn it was a very long way from the peninsula. Roslyn is east of the Cascade mountains not too far north of I-90. Cute little town made famous in 1990 by a comedy show called Northern Exposure

Yes, to have those two on the bench side by side would be a treat. And yeah, I'd say the 1897 is a further development of the Martini locking principle, with the breech face separated from the rear-pivoted locking block. The tipping bolt pumps are the slick ones. Take an Ithaca 37 or Winchester Model 12 for starters. And for ultraslick, a Remington 31 or a High Standard.
@harrymurphey2634
@harrymurphey2634 10 месяцев назад
.... you forgot one ... the Remington Model 17 ... designed Mr John Browning, released in 1917 but only in 20ga ... and that model was the direct father of the Ithaca Model 37 that was a slightly updated Model 17 by Peterson when the origonal patents ran out ...

Was the Winchester 1897 Mead in 2+1 to meet the section 2?. I'd really like to have a copy of the trench gun ie hand sheild and bayonet. What is the UK law on deactivated I'd even have a deactivated one.

Right you are. After a quick conversation with my uncle and a reference to the family tree/history, it appears that he traveled to the Peninsula where he stayed for nearly 3 years before sending for his wife and then 4 year old girl...who leaves a wife and 1 year old in Kansas while in Washington? They then settled in the Roslyn area where they stayed for nearly 20 years, eventually settling in the Tri Cities area. Records show Kennewick (sp?).

They have a problem cycling 3" magnum slugs and buckshot, the scraggly plastic gets hung up in the ejection port. There were no plastic shotgun shells when these guns were designed and made but they do love 2 3/4" Winchester PDX Defenders.

You need to review a L. C. Smith which was America’s Purdey, Boss, or Holland and Holland which ever is what you think is the best shotgun maker is.
@grannypanties4214
@grannypanties4214 2 года назад
I love American guns but to compare an L.C. Smith to a Purdey or H&H is a bit much. I’ve handled LC Smith’s of many grades but quality of the fit, finish, lockwork etc just isn’t on the same level as a London best. It’s not that the American guns are bad, they’re just as good as many English guns and kill birds just as dead, but the top end English guns are just on their own level.
