In this episode of BC Was Awesome host Bob Kronbauer travels to Peachland and gets the story of Eddy Haymour, a somewhat-misguided visionary who bought Rattlesnake Island in the 1980s and tried to turn it into a Moroccan-themed theme park. The government stepped in and put a stop to his plans, forcing the sale of the island to them. Haymour was having none of it, so he decided to take people in the Canadian embassy in Lebanon hostage to try and get his island back. If you can believe it (believe it, it's 100% true!) the history story from the Okanagan region of British Columbia gets even more weird from there.
******
BC Was Awesome is a multiple Leo Award-nominated series documenting the sometimes offbeat stories of the history of British Columbia. It's a co-production of Vancouver Is Awesome and Artaban Productions.

Loved his story. Heard it constantly from my grandparents who lived in Peachland. Delivered tons of pizza to his hotel for guests. :) Respect his dream.

I remember this! Not in this much detail, but I do remember the story of a man who wanted to build an "Amusement Park" on Rattlesnake Island. We lived in Penticton and my mom was commuting to Okanagan College at the time. They would stop in at the 'OSoGood' Cafe' for coffee and hear the stories. I didn't know what happened - just that it never opened. I DO remember hearing that he built the 'Castle' and I remember the statue of him. I was so bummed out when the statue came down, but I did understand why he was pointing to Rattlesnake Island. This is so cool. I'm going to share it on Facebook and, hopefully, more people will get to hear this amazing story. Thanks for posting this.

Cool! Thanks for sharing. We actually spun this story off into a full length documentary that's releasing soon. It's called Eddy's Kingdom: www.imdb.com/title/tt9723386/

When I was a kid we were one of his customers. I remember taking a boat from Peachland to there. There wasn't much to do. I think we played mini golf and got some ice cream. What a laugh from the past!

Met Eddie years ago, really nice guy. Polite, friendly.... his book sold out even when it was for sale in Sunnyside Market. He got shafted by the government...

Theres an episode of "The Dollop" comedy/history podcast on this and the more in depth you get, the crazier the whole story becomes. Like the guy was planning on sending letter bombs, BUT he was also 100% right that the local government was trying to screw him. The whole thing's nuts. Good video btw.

They should gave him at least a trial run. Horrible to ruin people's dreams. I remember my brother went for an interview at Castle Haymour, met Eddy who wanted him to work together. But my brother declined.

Dude was a narcisstic creep. There was talk when the "Castle" closed that there were cideo cameras hidden in the rooms. Friends stayed there once and the desk clerk kept trying to get them to rent porn videos from him
