The Old Abandoned General Store from 1910 : (Time-Capsule - Everything Left Behind!) Part 2 

Wonderful descriptive words friend! I share your feeling, gets to me too...that sense of all the lives, all the different personalities that have left their imprint in the house...and the sense that they like me, were once present, going about their business, laughing, crying, loving....and then gone. I'm aware of that in every old building I enter. Thanks for your input :)

No no, it's not silly or weird to think that way about the simplest things. If only EVERYONE had that kind of appreciation for that kind of stuff then people wouldn't be so quick go demolish or throw away everything because its too "old fashioned". I absolutely LOVE the way everything was so beautifully and skillfully crafted and had a lot of thought that went into their design, where as today, it's all about making things quick and cheap. Things were built to last, out of wood and metal, now it's all plastic and disposable. If more people thought like us, there would be more of those treasures left in this world for everyone to enjoy. And all the time and effort those skilled hands put into making them, would get the attention and admiration they deserve, instead of letting their work just get thrown away, unappreciated.

Yes I live in Switzerland, it's 25 years, as I've already pointed out in reply to a comment. I don't believe they dig them up, (unless the family have a specific wish) ...there's nothing much left after 25 years They just use the plot again.

Downhomesunset Yes I'll be opting for the toast well done too. I was brought up catholic, we used to have to view the bodies as well. Catholics don't embalm their dead, they just take up real estate. (at least not common in Europe - the Philippine Catholics do)

Yes, that little room with the solid ornate doors I couldn't figure out either, those doors were more ornate than any of the others in the house.

*****​ Yeah, it genuinely makes me want to cry when I see gorgeous old buildings so deteriorated beyond repair or when a perfectly good building gets demolished or completely remodeled, getting rid of any of the original features. Luckily this building isn't too bad, it mostly just needs a good cleaning and a few repairs, but it's so big and nice, it's a shame the owners are letting it get so run down :-( Haha I couldn't figure out what was weirder about the doors...the fact that they were such beautiful, elaborate doors, for one tiny hidden annex all the way in some out of the way corner of the attic...OR... the fact that they have WINDOWS!

I feel the same - unfortunately we live in a world where money rules; I don't hold out to any illusions that this building will be preserved, there's a lot of empty shops in this particular town - and it's only the fact that no-one wants this land...that keeps this old beauty intact for a while longer. There's a lot of old buildings being demolished over here, then they build apartments on the block. It's sad. Yeah I keep thinking maybe it was like a caretaker's office, because as you mentioned, why would they put glass on the doors of a storage room. I guess we'll never know the reason...but it's fun guessing :)

Yeah the room with bed frames in it, I haven't seen anything quite so ornate before in an attic, it was unusual. Most Swiss attics in large houses like this are for not only storage, but also for drying clothes during the long winter months. Thanks for watching Wendy!

The actual house inside is solid, but I guess that balcony was subject to the elements constantly...saying that, the right side of the balcony where to the toilets are situated...is still stable.

Yeah I find grave markers & gravestones in the most unlikely places...actually in the back area near the outhouse, there were 4 gravestones. 25 years is how long you get an earthly plot here. Part 3 comin' soon!

While I was there I think it was 30 or 35 years. Obviously that law must have been implemented in the 60s or 70s. I mention that due to the age of some markers. I have always thought that extreme religiosity of the Swiss (older generations) was kind of od. Especially since the Vatican struggled a lot with the restless Swiss during the middle ages. Who managed to seduce them?

I would say so! Those Swiss are so stubbornly independent. I would not be surprised if one of the Kantons limits the duration to EXACTLY 24 years 3 months, two days and 4 hours!

No this was a family house and shop, the old man who ran it became infirm - those weren't nurse uniforms, they were dust jackets and such sold through the store.

Hi Rufus - yes, usually the attic was used for drying clothes in Winter, and also for storing certain garden produce. But even then the space is enormous; often they are two tier.

Yes I've explored quite a few old houses in Switzerland with these balcony toilets (sort of a vintage en-suite) If you notice, the hole in to toilet is large, so the waste, both solid & liquid would drop straight down into what ever receptacle provided below. So it would only be a many of cleaning with a toilet brush. In some country houses I've explored, the waste goes straight down into pig pens below...which would then be ...ahem...recycled.

+ObsoleteOddity - thanks. it looked to me like the pipe took a turn, so i couldnt understand how it worked. i am familiar with the concept, here in the US, we still find them . some old houses have indoor plumbing, but the sewage just goes into a pit. some have just a 55 gallon metal drum in a hole lined with rocks. as a child, the farm across from us had just an open sewage pond. i used to work in construction and we would run into them. but i never saw one on the second floor. thanks for your response. great channel.

I just checked it out, you're right this one has a bend (most I see are straight) ...so indeed, they must have flushed it by hand. What you say about the sewage pit as a child, brings back memories of the first house my parents bought in Australia - it had an outside toilet (Dunny) ...and the waste originally went into a chemically treated drum underneath the toilet, which would be emptied every week by the local services - later my father had a big pit dug so we could have a flushing system. ***** Yes I also once lived as a child with an outhouse in the backyard, where the effluent went straight into a sewer pit, but later removable 'cans' were fitted under the toilet which would be emptied by the local authorities, So the outhouse could stay permanently in the same position. In a lot of old farmhouses here, the human waste would drop from the toilet straight into the pig pen!! Part 3 is comin' soon!

Couldn't imagine it going to the pig pen - wonder what evil genius thought up that - plus that means the pen was near the house - glad we were poor, lmao. ***** oh yeah, lol - I guess on a mountain it would be difficult. Actually as a kid we were a poor family, the local authority emptied the 'john's' just like emptying the trash (came out the taxes) my father worked two jobs, and we were the first in the whole area to afford a flush toilet! lol Re: the pig pen loo - most were situated near a rear entrance to the property (like in this video) ...and the pig pens would be underneath.
