The church dedicated to Saints Donato and Carpoforo became the main church of Renate (Italy) in the second half of the 16th century and was twice enlarged and restored until 1777, when the beautiful new bell tower was built on the church façade. In 1776, a new concert of five bells was cast from the famous Bonavilla foundry in Milan. The five bells are in the scale of D major. The third bell in F sharp was recast in 1869, because it cracked when struck by lightning during a thunderstorm.

The bells are playing the traditional midday concert, which consists of bringing the bells up and then bringing them down one at a time at regular intervals, forming several musical scales concluded by the major bell, the bell that completes the diatonic scale.
The first church was built in the Middle Ages on this hill and depended on two Benedictine monasteries that owned some land here that was entrusted to the management of some local families. In the meantime, two more churches were built, so much so that an important book from 1200 already lists three churches in this village. The church dedicated to Saint Donatus was rebuilt several times, until it officially became the parish and main church of Renate in 1578. After the terrible plague epidemics that had decimated the population, the faithful began to grow in numbers so that the church was completely rebuilt in Baroque style. The church was completely rebuilt in 1960 and unfortunately whitewashed in 1797, so that the only frescoed parts were the numerous side chapels.
