Plas Power Colliery.
Work began to sink the first mine shaft at Plas Power in 1875 and coal was first produced there in 1877.
In 1881, the mining company was renamed The Broughton and Plas Power Coal Company, which in 1912 also took over Gatewen Colliery, Bersham Colliery and Smelt Colliery. Over time extensive railway links were developed across the area. The Plas Power Colliery produced Welsh Steam Coal which was delivered by rail to the ports of Liverpool and Connah’s Quay to power vessels of the major shipping lines of the day, including Cunard and P & O; to the railway yards of the Great Western Railway and the London and North Western Railway to power steam trains; to the Wrexham Gas light Company and finally to the regional inland coal trade for commercial and domestic use. Imposing winding houses stood above the Western and Eastern shafts. When raising coal, the team working underground would load the tubs of coal into the cage and ring a bell in the Winding Engine House as a signal to operate the steam powered engine to bring the cage to the surface. The colliery was one of the first coal mines in Wales to adopt the use of electricity underground, and a power station was built at Plas Power which also supplied power to the Gatewen and Vron Collieries. The colliery attracted visitors from as far away as Japan to inspect what was considered to be such a modern mine for the time. The mine employed 1,099 men at its peak, producing over 2000 tons of coal per week and holding the Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria for the supply of coal. By 1938 the colliery was becoming more difficult and expensive to mine and suffered increasing difficulties with water seepage underground. As a result the decision was taken to close. All 620 of the men still working there lost their jobs.

Great video, I was born in the Vron and spent my childhood playing at the Vron colliery air shafts and also being chased away from Plas Power and the brickyard. 😂

Reg Mason, was an ostler and Jack Salisbury was a fitter at Plas Power colliery before taking employment at Brymbo; Reg was the engineering managers clerk, Jack Salisbury worked both the loco shed and millwrights before becoming works chauffeur.

Fantastic video, great info 👍🏻 recently moved into the area and had been struggling to find any information. Do you have any on the branch railways in the area? Or any sources/books good for the local history
