It's pretty wild how accurately some of these theories - from as far back as the 90s!! - managed to predict Halo's story over a decade in advance. Call the old HBO users Ord Casto with their prophet-like abilities
Young people today don't realise how much of a 'wild west' the internet was in in the early 2000s. Today it is basically the new form of corporate advertising but back in this time, it was mostly forums and message boards for some truly obscure stuff. It's nice to see stuff that old is still available in some form or another. Thanks for dredging some of this up HiddenX
I miss the days of the internet before mass adoption of cellphones with internet capability. Things were both murky, yet clear. It was wild and free. Nowadays everything is stale and sterile, artificial, bland, with the only consistent flavor being the bitterness and sourness of corporate propaganda and extreme social disharmony. I miss arguments over silly things not resulting in being branded a thoughtcriminal or a sheep. Much simpler, more innocent days.
@@trashjash From what I understand, some early web-development ethos was inspired by "hippie" culture and concepts. The belief that information should be free and accessible for all was a big part of this. Having 'open source' content was seen as good and trying to milk profits was viewed with suspicion. I really appreciate your reply and what it made me think about. Also glad other people here are interested in early net history! 🤓
@@trashjash and on the lighthearted humour, I've seen a lot of that in text-adventure games/interactive fiction from the time period. Where you have to fill a hot air balloon with honey to lure down a bear from the top of a tree in order to collect a sample of its fur to make a toupee for a balding locksmith in exchange for him making a key that you need to access a secret dungeon, or something wacky like that
10:42 Well if you want to take John 117 to the full meaning the law (Cortana) was given through Moses (noble 6) but the grace and truth came through Jesus Christ (Master chief) basically Cortana was chose the chief and trusted him, but she was given to Noble 6 to give to chief Or I could just looking into it too much
I don't know exactly when Joe Staten started working for Bungie, but his dad is a minister and teaches theology. Might have had some influence with the biblical references in the Halo-verse.
@@beoxsgaming9388 maybe he changed beliefs because leaks of the Destiny 1 story he made said it had Anti-Thiest themes, with the Speaker being similar to the Prophet of Truth and the Guardians like the Covenant who were supposed to learn the Traveler they had been fighting for had actually spawned the Darkness and caused the collapse.
that’s exactly it, the original 3 games all had Joe Staten writing the ingame dialogue, which is why so many characters reference Bible themes and ideals. I miss when Halo had that symbolism.
@@jakespacepiratee3740because the point is not to believe in something blindly. But to think for youself where good is, to seek where you think it is, despite what the forces of nature seem to be. Activating Halo would just be an act of sacrifice to save the rest of the universe. Chief decided to destroy it instead. He is humanity.
@@jakespacepiratee3740 I've actually heard that those claims were proven false, and Staten never actually said anything about the Traveler or the Speaker secretly being evil.
Chief being "the first and the last" is actually referring to his place in the Spartan II program. He was always referred to as the last Spartan in the OG trilogy marketing, and he was the first candidate evaluated by Halsey. Bungie was very deliberate with Biblical references. I guarantee that was the intent.
I wish they kept the storyline of Cortana holding the galaxy hostage. I was finally onboard with the story again and had hope, but they pulled the good old "somehow Cortana lost" rudely interjecting a new storyline into the main games that you'd have to read or play side projects to understand. A new Halo for a new generation. I wonder why Microsoft doesn't want a story with a corrupted AI, and instead gives the new generation a bubbly "I'm your best friend" AI. Hmmm.....
Probably because every time Cortana on a PC found out she was based on an AI mass-murderer, she suffered a fatal error, and had to be pulled by Microsoft. You know, because the left hand at Microsoft doesn't know what the right hand is doing. We got Copilot instead. That's the name of 'The Weapon'.
@@JimBrown-q1b don't be sorry about it, because WEF advisor Yuval Harari has openly said AI will be our new gods, and we will pray to them. "Hey Google, who should I marry?". This guy advises governments and corporations, he also writes children's books. It's not good at all what they are setting up. Praise God
We should all stand outside 343 headquarters while aggressively humming every halo ost cosplaying 117 with angel wings until they show us confirmation of halo 7
Reminds me of how I predicted halo 4’s entire first mission scene for scene in my room as a kid doing role play as the chief. The look on my face when the game came out was just in awe that I predicted the future so vividly like that.
I was talking to my husband about this a couple of years ago and we were like it totally fits the story! lol funny that you’re talking about it now, will have to send it to him.
Thank you for all your amazing videos you make. Your passion for the lore and theories surrounding Halo is in infectious and keeps my love for this franchise burning bright. I also love your recent videos going into the more obscure halo lore always a blast to watch.
@@proper7439 Then one possessed with a demon was brought to Him, blind and mute, and He healed him, so that the blind and mute man both spoke and saw. 23 All the people were amazed and said, “Is He not the Son of David?” 24 But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, “This Man does not cast out demons, except by Beelzebub the ruler of the demons.” 25 Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation. And every city or house divided against itself will not stand. 26 If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. Then how will his kingdom stand? 27 And if I cast out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore, they shall be your judges. 28 But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. 29 “Or else how can one enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods unless he first binds the strong man? @@jakespacepiratee3740 His point is that Jesus was accused by the religious leaders of the day, who were in error, of operating by the power of a demon. And so in the same way Jesus was accused by the religious leaders of being a demon-force, so is the Masterchief accused of being a demon by the covenant.
Hidden has been birthing out banger after banger. I love these super deep dives into not only halos history, but the very VERY early internet. Def wouldnt mind Luc doing this with other subjects
Steve Downes (the voice of Master Chief) was the first actor to portray Peter Quill, Star-Lord in a Marvel TV show or movie. Star-Lord's original origin implied that he was born of immaculate conception, implying that he was the second coming of Christ. This is probably just a coincidence though.
To be honest, when you base something so heavily on history/fiction already existing, somewhat "predicting" it won't be very difficult. I'd also dare to guess that some people were leaking early concepts rather than predicting. There's also this thing some developers like to do which is mould the story after predictions of fans, as they often have really cool ideas of where it can be taken.
Oh yeah, just a funny little thing: if you play on anniversary graphics on CE, one of the posters on the glowing blue billboard on the bridge after you enter on the first mission, the top left one has a troll face on it. It might just randomly appear, or it might be because nobody looks at them, but found it
Hi Xperia! I recommend you look at MCCs custom browser once in a while as it would be worth it. The community is making so many amazing things. I know of 2 different halo reach communities that make absolutely solid invasion maps and modes for the player base to enjoy. One has spent like 4 years balancing these maps and was even working with 343 devs to put them into matchmaking (it ended up getting cancelled) and the other community makes custom browser compatible modded invasion (grunts, flyable spirits, drones, scaled up forge objects etc) which is a LOT of fun. There is also a bunch of cool infection maps floating around which didn't exist 10 years ago. Would love to see some MCC on your channel once in a while.
I watch a lot of youtube, but this video is in my top ten. I love how much lore and history is put into such a magnificent game and the community who brings all the effort of making this story a reality.
6:17 Where are you getting that 'anything on a halo ring is immune to its effects'? I don't think that's accurate. Per halopedia: "While organisms aboard the twelve older rings were safe from the Halo effect itself due to its directional nature, any sentient being would still experience an uncomfortable sensation in the vicinity of the pulse.[105] .. .[11] Any living creature on the newer seven rings, however, would be killed and need to be reintroduced following the firing of the array."
When the Bungie page threads about halo were opened, during the Combat evolved era (yes, I'm that old). A lot of people knew this, but in those times, they censored any religious threads. We couldn't talk about it.
I do wonder what the writers of these old theories think about the franchise nowadays, if they still follow it. Like, when I joined the Halo fandom and became a fan of it, it was "relatively" late in the franchise. 2008. (Even though I did know the games since CE and have played it. I joined a forum themed around Halo and joined the ranks of fanfic writers there, eventually writing my own story within the story, envisionning what would Halo become after H3, if a sequel was to ever happen. All the while reading the chapters uploaded by the other writers of the forum. Were we wrong about our predictions ? Mostly. But the feeling you have when a minor, little tiny details that you imagined years ago as part of your very own story, ended up being true, well that's certainly something :P Makes me think that I probably owe apologies to one of those writers from the forum, whose story's main character was a sangheili with a bionic left arm and with which I often argued about how it would be frown upon by the species xD
From what I have heard from others, halo has multiple references to the Bible. The story is loosely related to the storyline of the Bible, The Creation, the Fall, Redemption, and Restoration.
Fr tho Master Chief could be seen as a metaphor for Jesus, as he came and saved us from destruction (The Covenant). Now, MC hasn't died for our sins yet, so the parallel ends there, but It's interesting to see otherwise
And a comment i found on this Vid said this: "Master Chief as his full name of John 117 is a reference to a Bible verse in John talking about how Jesus is the only way to Heaven. This alone helps to explain why we are fighting Prophets and the Flood as it is literally the Pharisees and false prophets as aliens and the Flood is essentially Hell and the Devil with each combat form being a representation of a soul lost to sin walking around in agony and suffering while controlled by a puppet master. Heck, it even made me realize that the mission Cortana from Halo 3 is more religious then it seems as it is not Chief saving Cortana in a knight in shinning armor saving a princess from a dragon moment, no it is Jesus saving a sinner from the debts of Hell moment, especially when you take in what Cortana says when Chief save her which sounds more like a sinner thinking she is too far gone. And, the fact that Chief destroys High charity can be seen as similar to Jesus destroying Hell as the only way after death as we Christians are told that after Jesus died, he went to Hell for 2 days and in there, saved every soul deemed worthy of salvation and the inheritance of Heaven and in essence destroyed or damaged Hell in a way similar to that of destroying reactors in the mission Cortana. I hope I am making the comparison clear because it is hard to put into words for this sometimes." Interesting ay?
@@m16-a2 Yea, it's a very clear allegory to the Book of Revelation. But because a lot of people have never read the New Testament or are even familiar with it through cultural osmosis, they often just assume "oh Halo is about how religion is bad because the aliens are called prophets 🤤". Ironically, these are usually the same people who will scream "media illiterate" at you for unironically enjoying Starship Troopers (the movie, not the book).
Covenant are literally Muslim, reddit bros are Media Illiterate. Anyone who brags of their media literacy on reddit doesnt have a clue what theyre talking about
I mean... Marathon, bungie's trilogy before Halo, did all that! A nameless hero, one who beat back countless impossible odds, reincarnated thousands of times as famous rage filled warriors of old, and in the future.
Great video 🎉 Would love to see you break down theories about the franchise made after Halo 1 I want to see what people came up with after a nice chunk of story
Weird coincidence as I was going through my head 30 minutes ago as to how Jesus, through the Gospel of John, partially inspired the creation of the Master Chief as his full name of John 117 is a reference to a Bible verse in John talking about how Jesus is the only way to Heaven. I hope I am making the comparison clear because it is hard to put into words for this sometimes.
Was looking for a comment like yours, Ive been a Christian and Halo fan most of my life, loved the religious themes in the original trilogy. your realization of the Cortana mission is spot on, the Gravemind whispering things to Chief always reminds me of how Satan whispered lies to Adam and Eve.
@@Getmerked65 Thanks, and not just Adam and Eve, but Jesus as well with the temptations of Christ, especially when you realize that there are only three missions the Grave Mind speaks to you in Floodgate, Cortana, Halo. It is literally like Satan's three attempts to corrupt Jesus with turning rocks into bread, jumping off a building to tempt fate, and submitting to the Evil one for power, and like Christ, Chief refused these temptations and destroyed the Flood.
Howard may have gotten the idea of the Halos being portal devices wrong, but they certainly got close in one weird way: notice in the text of their post, they say... "I think one of the names of the nearby planets to the halo is actually the word gateway in a foreign tounge- but I don't remember for sure." The gas giant that Alpha Halo orbits is, in fact..."Threshold".
Marathon is Not Halo, yeah it is oddly similar, that’s why both are from the same company, also when Halo CE was launched, bungie stated until 2004 that MC was indeed the Security’s Officer from Marathon, that is why you can see marathon logo on Halo CE logo behind the Halo title, on Keyes uniform, even on the monitor that almost makes MC to blow up the galaxy, no surprise why the lore was “”predicted”” for halo
Yeah we have. The Y glyphs are a red herring to get you to research all the literature that inspired the game. They are Y shaped because theyre only there to make you ask "Why" and then start reading things. Thats the answer. Marty confirmed this in the comments of a Rocket Sloth video. There is no other meaning behind them. Marty just wanted to make us smarter by giving us homework (and it worked)
Why? Read Dantes Inferno, read T.S. Eliots The Hollow Men, do the glyphs make any more sense? No, but now youre cultured and you know things. Thats "Why" 😉 get it?
Don’t know if it’s true, but someone claiming to be a lore writer working in connection with Bungie said the referenced Bible verse for chief’s designation is not John 1:17. The full title of the last book of the Bible is actually The Revelation of John, and the verse this writer referenced was 1:17. Bungie didn’t like the implication, supposedly, but didn’t change it.
My hunch is there all of these studios are gonna work together to create a combo that’s like a universe or Multiverse but all connected because of the story and right now we just don’t see how it’s connected but I promise you it’s all connected
13:28 Sony is tied to destiny though so a link up between companies to build a game link could build a parallel universe but as a game universe aging in the same rate and evolving but without making more games. I for one want these links to be slowly pinched and formed to where all the games were somehow all linked and we never saw completely until we get more pieces and such from games. Like lore from halo in destiny and marathon having the lore for both of them or something.
If you exclude everything post-Bungie and only focus on the games, the biblical words used draw strong parallels. This includes the forerunners being human arc. The gods release a FLOOD/plague against those unholy that turned away from them with their sacrilegious creations and believing they were greater and no longer needed them. The humans, ran to the ARK for safety and that a jesus-like figure sacrificed himself, cut ancient human, and gave humanity a second chance. It's not perfect 1 to 1 but has clearly strong ties with Christianity mythology which is cool because I knew from the title Halo it was slightly religious undertones but when you understand the name FLOOD and ARK references it makes sense where they got inspiration from for the overal story.
The one story where the gentleman was so confident in his theory, he worried for his safety lmao he most certainly had been drinking the prophets lies 😅
I’ve been saying it for years. They make bible references and he’s basically the savior of humanity. But I do believe it’s also related to the corrupt demiurge theory from nostic teachings. In the AC 😂 Valhalla the character fluke talks about the demiurge as well. The universe 👤
Humansa didn’t know how to work Dorfunner technology and so the I would say it still remains possible that they are capable of being portals in order to re sees the galaxy
I feel like we’ve always known this. He was raised from birth to be both better than everybody, but also the pinnacle of human morality and determination. He willingly throws down his life at every opportunity in service of a universe where his people are guided from the depths of despair and brought forth into a newer, better age. All he’s ever wanted is to give himself for the lives of others. It wasn’t until 343 that this connection started to fall apart and even then he tried to kill himself to take out the Didact and save Earth. The Master Chief is self-sacrifice incarnate.
@@markricheard1870 You’re being far too literal. Also The Covenant see him as a demon, not humanity (or at least not the people in the inner colonies).
@@jakespacepiratee3740 They call every Spartan “demon” because in early lore it was understood that all Spartan IIs rocked identical armor. When they killed one Spartan another would come and kill more of them, hence the title “demon” being used for all Spartans. It’s not an exclusive title to Chief. Regardless of whether you and I agree with it, he had parallels to Jesus. I don’t think “Jesus with guns” is a great thing either, but the fact of the matter is that he’s “born” in an unnatural way and chooses to use his abilities to protect humanity instead of abusing that power, and he only brings destruction to those that would harm the innocent of humanity. The covenant were not the good guys, if they are diametrically opposed to the dude that was written as “Bulletproof Jesus,” then they’re intended to be the ones in the wrong. But we can’t separate this from the real world parallels either: the original trilogy is more about the futility of war and the loss of life in a conflict with no purpose (similar to when we found out Iraq did not actually have WMDs). Whatever parallels the Chief has to Jesus are the direct result of the cultural influence of Christianity on the hero archetype, the same way Superman sacrifices himself against doomsday and the same way Old Man Logan died protecting X-23 and the other kids. It’s in that big idea of “sacrificing one’s own life for the greater good” where the parallel truly lies.
I mean, John-117 being a Christ figurehead is the point of Halo 3, and that Halo 3: ODST shows a glimpse of what happened if John-117 failed: Hell on Earth.
Hey brother,I do too, I’ve beat all the halos on legendary (it was fun) but this guy instead of assuming aspects from scripture,he fabricates them, and aswell he read fabricated scripture in 7:20. There were many ways to approach the parallels halo took from our scriptures, but he did not use any of them and used a false dichotomy from a conspiracy theorist with no actual knowledge of scripture.
Oh and the lore and story for destiny is twisted and filled with such mystery about religion as well. Maybe we need some lore experts from the games to come together and maybe do some digging
At 11:12, I've been trying to find this piece of halo music for a while now because its really good, if somebody could tell me the name of it that would be great since I cant seem to find it in the ost website
Master Chief is definitely Jesus. He is “The Reclaimer” (as Christ came to destroy death and reclaim humanity for himself). Halfway through Halo 2 he is baptized by falling in the lake after defeating Regret. This is also a death/resurrection.
The flood is an entity that takes and reshapes like the destiny winnower and the wrkincater lmao sorry i butchered that. They sound like the same entity with different shapes. Marathon has big ties to destiny and could be the previous history but maybe halo is part of that. Maybe.
Halfway through. A LOT of stretching going on. Particularly the first chapter of the Maw being named "the horse you rode in on". Contextually that's a reference to the real life saying going back to at least the 19th century. It's basically a way of saying "you are not worthy of existence". The modern adaptation of this is "fuck you and the horse you rode in on", which is most likely what the chapter title is referring to.
