Mombasa is older than 300 years it was actually founded by a mijikenda woman known as mwana mkisi before the coming of the Arab, it was known then as kongowea. like all places in the world where continents are close to each other the population is of mixed ancestry, Arab, Indian, African, Portuguese and some trace of Chinese and Persian.

@pm yes there was trade between the island and Northern Mozambique upto the Kongo kingdoms but mwana mkisi was mijikenda this was over a thousand years ago. when the islands were firmly under the mijikenda.

Very true Wa Muigai. We need to diversify. Kenya has a lot to over other than game reserves. There is so much history there which is quite a popular aspect of tourism in other parts of the world. Sports should be looked at as well. Sports tourism is quite huge in the west. We are very dynamic in this especially athletics but we don't market ourselves well.

@ Peter mburu, that is coz when we visit coast and other places, we just want to stay in the hotel swimming and drinking and don't even take the time to understand anything about the area. about 7 years me and family said, whenever we go on holiday we will take the time to just do touristy stuff. In 2013 nilipoenda fort Jesus after a long time, have since gone many times-it dawned me that I hadn't visited since I was a child on a school trip. Tukienda pahali let's inject some cash into the local economy sio hotel tu. Kuna watu wengi walienda masai Mara this weekend lakini apart from game drive na hotel hakuna kitu ingine wamefanya-not even visiting a masai village. Many people have been to diani esp our youtubers but have not gone to Kisite Marine park to see dolphins ama shimoni caves etc. Sorry for rambling : anywho the point is kuenda pahali sio hotel tu.

Hello, and again many memories that come alive. When I was in Mombasa with my wife in January 2019, we also visited Fort Jesus. A young student showed us around the fort and the old town. We then invited him to dinner in the Forodhani Restaurant. He told us that he is a Maasai and is studying medicine in Mombasa. He showed us photos in his traditional festive clothing. It was a very nice and entertaining day. By the way, the hotels on the other bank are often used as backdrops for music videos, Sauti Sol Unconditionally Bae or Otile Brown - Baby love just as examples. Only African music plays in my car. Hi African Traveller. I just watched your video about Old Town Mombasa. This can be a great tourist attraction even for locals if it is well maintained to allow access inside some of the buildings like the British Police Station, the burial grounds and others. I think this would be an opportunity to grow tourism in Mombasa and Kenya. I think there should be a push for improving some of the tourist destinations in Kenya. For example I don't see much interest in Northern Kenya. Kenya can take advantage of the lakes features for further tourist activities even if it is investing in a Large water park by the Lake. I think the Government should invest in the area to allow investors to come in.

Everywhere you can meet that "old thing", is beautiful!!! And Mombasa is beautiful, because of that "bombing couple" of the old historical centre & the natural location of the city (beautiful cliffy coast). I told you in another video too, that no one medium aesthetics common block is beautiful, especially in Africa, except if that building follows local features, but by the best building way. The old & folk will save Africa. And that prefers also a tourist mostly in a country!!! Preserving the history & the folk heritage of any place on that planet!!! Just look at Lamu, but mostly Shela how trully beautiful and nicely preserved it is!!! If you want a greater example of a positive impact of tourism in Africa, just look at that central, Mopti province of Mali!!! The most beautiful inland African province by far!!! Why??? Everywhere history & architecture... folk architecture!!! And clearly local african (Mopti and all the Bandiagara villages)!!! By the way, many times when i was watching in photos those old beautiful balconies in Mombasa, i was imaginating India!!! Now, i'm just comming true!!!

The Portuguese brought people from Goa who were Christians and they built the biggest Catholic Church in Mombasa which still stands today. The British brought Indians from all the all over India. 4:19 When he say Indian means Goans from Goa...that built that building with the balconies in the Portuguese style and not in the Indian style. The small church you passed up was also built by the Goans from Goa who held Portuguese passports and were Christians. They were converted by the Portuguese in Goa, India after Vasco DeGama landed in Goa. They have ancestors of Vasco DeGama still living in Goa. One runs a great Goan restaurant in Goa.
