I've had the 3861 for a month now, the sharp edges haven't been an issue for me, the watch sits comfortably on the wrist, way better than the previous version due to the slimmer case. The bracelet feels lighter and higher end, big improvement there. The accuracy I'm getting is of approximately +0.5 sec/day and some days less than that!
Not really "a week on the wrist" that I expected. I expect less details on the specification and history. Instead, talks more about every day wear, take it outside, go to the train, drive a car. Prefer you focus more on everyday usage. That's "A week on the wrist" to me. This is just like an ordinary review.
Totally agree. I think people can easily get a history lesson on the Speedy and its movements from countless other sources. More interested in the intrinsic wearing experience, and no mention about the overly sharp (not in a good way) finish of the case edges and bracelet? I've seen some comments from owners and people who tried it on about the finishing being rough and scrapes the wearer's skin.
Couldn’t agree more. Skip the specs, history, etc. Almost everyone knows the case size and that it went to the moon. But how does it wear and function in real life?
I got the sapphire version and have lusted after a Moonwatch since I was a teen. It's so iconic and timeless in style. The new bracelet is absolutely stunning as well. It will be a watch for my son in let's hope many years to come.
I added one of these to my collection recently, mainly due to the cool factor of the watch. But as time has gone on, I find myself wearing it more than the others. I got the hesalite version and it is so lightweight and comfortable. I plan on wearing my Speedy for the rest of my life. I like it that much. I am pretty new to watches so if you are on the fence because of the manual winding, don’t be. I was somewhat reluctant at first because of this but now, this may sound weird, but it is kind of fun to wind it every day or two.
I agree that a silicon hairspring is a good thing, but I’m wondering what you guys do that would make it the reason to pick one watch over another. In all my life I’ve never magnetised a watch and I’ve never consciously avoided anything magnetic, except for obvious things like leaving them on top of CRT TVs and speakers. I see a silicon hair spring as a nice bonus but wouldn’t factor into my choice at all when shopping for a watch. Silicon escapement on the other hand...
@@glenbuyer8738 I have a z-blue milgauss, it’s a professional watch designed for professions such as the scientists that worked on the first particle accelerator. Also, it’s short for Mille Gauss: literally 1,000 gauss. These silicon hairspring watches are rated at 15,000 gauss. Do these people live in an MRI machine? Again, it’s not bad to have a silicon hair spring, but basing your purchase decision on it seems odd to say the least. It has no real practical purpose to most people, whereas a silicon escapement does.
When I hear people complain about higher prices all I can think is they've never ran a business before, the cost of doing business never stops going up. I bought my 16800 Submariner brand new for 880.00 out the door in 1982, the new Speedmaster is worth every penny Omega is asking for it, a true classic!
I have had my Sapphire 3861 for a month and have not had any issues with the overhyped sharp edges or fragility of the bracelet. The watch is almost perfect. Don’t listen to anyone and judge for yourself! The only changes I would make would be an adjustable 3 position clasp and an applied Omega name along with the logo on the dial.
I’m surprised the clasp even has adjustment! I can’t believe anyone would criticize this bracelet, it’s the best speedmaster bracelet I’ve ever seen, and with so many points of articulation it’s probably incredibly comfortable too
Same! Although I do disagree on the clasp topic… but each to their own, as I guess it’s relative to the owner. An applied ‘Omega’ stamp would’ve made it more of a beast, but that’s ok, as it’s a beast as it is. I’ve had mine for 5 days, and anybody who sees it, calls it a ‘monster’! Congrats on your purchase. I just received mine. I could tell it’s genuine thanks to the razor sharp edges on the case, lol. It felt like winning a small lottery because I was forced to wait until our anniversary this year. This little piece of steel makes my heart pound so much I need to sit down from time to time.
Please please please can Jack do more videos. His insight & delivery; in particular his use of language, is both informative & captivating & his knowledge is superb.
@@Macca-95 definitely; they've always shied away from doing that & that is a negative imo. That being said it's unlikely that Hodinkee would be given a substandard model to review because that could make or break a release. Given some of the comments from others who have actually handled this watch it would be great to see people make those videos as a counterpoint. My comment really was about style & delivery & I happen to find Jack very good at that.
@@thatsbod1041 Hodinkee is definitely sharp with their presentation but I think that today they are unfit for purpose. The point of an industry review site like Hodinkee presents itself is that it can educate the consumers on a product but also push back against the failings of an industry. Hodinkee is not willing to do that today which really just leaves me looking at it not as an industry reviewer but instead just as the industry notice board.
I wonder if there will ever be a “week on the wrist” that concludes with something other than positives. I long for the vid that ends with “to summarise it was dogs**t and I wouldn’t keep it if it was free!” Enjoyed the vid and Jack speaks very well. But every watch seems to be good with a week to wear it on the wrist!
I think it's hard to say "this watch is objectively bad" since most tastes are subjective, and I don't think they would purposefully waste their time reviewing a terrible watch just for the sake of it.

I just got my SS on bracelet on 10.7.23 and I am very pleased with it. I have wanted a "Moonwatch" since the 70's and it looks like my timing is excellent. The 3861 with all its technical / mechanical advancements is amazing. The new 5 link melt on your wrist bracelet with the recently introduced on the fly micro length adjustment. The new stepped dial, lume, domed hands, dot over 90, etc... is close to perfection. I chose the SS because of the durability and the open case back. I love to look at the movement. I am very pleased. It set me back USD 8,000 and is a tremendous value. Oh, yeah did I say it is beautiful. A classy, humble beautiful.
I mean to be fair- Omega doesn’t need Hodinkees help to sell Speedmasters lol. Also, what if Jack legitimately doesn’t see any negatives? I fully acknowledge Hodinkee’s proclivity to shilling, but I don’t think that’s the case here.

I've worn my Speedmaster every day for about a year and I still love it. It looks classy yet practical, and despite being told by several watch enthusiasts to not wear it swimming, working, cycling, etc., it's a tough watch! The only drawback is that it has no date function, which I didn't notice until after I bought it.
I have always wanted a Speedy Pro and this "relaunch" coincides with my 40th birthday so I'll start and stop my watch collection with this one and hopefully wear it for another 40 years until I can hand it down. Can't wait. It's absolute perfection.
Just that? I would add that for me those two things plus the fact it will never be affected by magnetic fields, while still maintaining the essence of the Moonwatch dial layout with no date, were more than enough reason to get it so my older OSP from 1968 can get a rest from my wrist.
@@rhannay39 Wouldn't be good for the puropose of this watch since ceramic shatters much more easily; just like the reason that the regular model still uses hesalite. Maybe they could put ceramic on the sapphire sandwich, but definitely not the hesalite!
I always like hodinkee's stuff whenever jack is involved. Great tone, imagery, and just overall great explanations from him. Gives a very detailed description every time.
Agree, but I had the previous hesalite version and got scratches on the crystal before I even got a chance to wear the watch. All I did was take it out of the case and put it back a few times. Bracelet got a nice ding on it too. I returned it immediately, and bought a 14060m sub instead. Part of that decision was also because the end links made the watch appear to protrude beyond the edges of my wrist.
This is my grail watch. I had one on my wrist in Singapore and was verrrrrry tempted to buy it right then and there because of the exchange rate, but I just made a big expenditure and can’t justify a $5k+ purchase on a watch. One day. Maybe later this year, but definitely one day.
I bought an 1863 sapphire model last summer on a bracelet from my AD for $4500, and the new version would cost me $7150 with no discounts. While I do appreciate the updated movement, that’s a heck of a price difference to swallow.
Great video, thanks. The lug to lug is not 20mm however, that the lug WIDTH. The lug to lug is the ‘north to south’ distance from the very tips of the lugs at the 12 O’clock position, to those at the 6th; at least by everybody else’s convention.
I love it, I own both new 321 and Hesalite 3861 and for me 3861 wins. The beauty of 321 is unquestionable, but I enjoy having METAS accuracy on my 3861, the only negative is the buckle, it feels cheap.
Great video and a great watch. I would say the 861 did also make it to the moon (orbit not landing) on Apollo and one flown watch was sold at auction (Ron Evans Heat Flow Experiment). That does bring the Moonwatch family together.

Other RU-vid sources have critized the sharp edges of the case and lugs and the wristband being abrasive. What is Hodinkee's experience after one week of testing. Can you confirm that comfort and wearability of this watch are in fact compromised ?
They are not. I’ve been wearing mine all day for almost 2 weeks now and as long as you don’t wear your watch like a tourniquet your won’t have any issue.
At 7k plus, not sure I see the "value" that always made the Speedy so attractive, the movement upgrades are great but you are certainly paying for them a few times over considering it is still missing the originals column wheel. I think at that point I would just go vintage even if it costs a bit more. Would love to pick up a 321, I know its a lot more but then again the "new" one is 14k. At that point the original starts to make a lot more sense.
I have a Speedy...Pepsi...and 43 SeaDweller. I am selling the 2 Rolex because I just don't like them as much as the Speedy. It is so comfortable and such a good looking watch...I always find myself picking it up.
The Seamaster still has a bit to do before they master the wave bracelet. It’s a little to thick and the clasp is massive. It doesn’t have to taper, but they could add more points of articulation by sizing down the links, make them thinner, give us a smaller clasp , and if need be add a bit more roundness to the links. I think it would be the best way forward.
After owning the new Seamaster for a year I can confirm it’s excellent but it needs a few tweaks to make it perfect. Ironically it needs all the changes that the new Speedmaster has just got and a few more too. A bit slimmer and smaller a tapered bracelet and match the subs bezel clicks. Also a matte dial no date option with a lumed bezel would be perfect 👌🏼 the new speedy is pretty much perfect and I’ve tried it on at least 4 times now to make sure. Omega are definitely making the right moves. (the edges were not sharp just we’ll machined)
@@damjanstojkovic5749 yeah, it is pretty sharp! Have you watched the Timless Watch channels video on it? When I mentioned it to my AD he said those sharp edges wear off soon after wearing it but I don’t see how stainless steel edges will lose that sharpness just from your skin lol
Don't know what you're talking about. Got the 3861 for 2 weeks now and I have not experienced sharp edges. You will only feel how sharp they are when you try to feel how sharp the edges are.

I have checked out about 4 different watches of the new speedy in both hesalite and sapphire and they were all pretty sharp. I’m not saying it will cut you but I have never felt another case that sharp before. It seems strange. All the rolex I have owned and my other omega and others I’ve handled, nothing like it.
Can you imagine being the person putting pretty Speedmasters inside of the machines that expose them to intense heat and vibrations? My heart would break with each test.

Having had this watch now (Hesalite version) for over 2 weeks, I can attest to the quality, improvements, and overall comfort of wearing this watch. In addition to the superbly comfortable bracelet (no, I don't notice any sharp edges), the watch sits more comfortable on the wrist. Omega has done a double bevel on the case back, as opposed to the single bevel of the predecessor, and the case is also slightly thinner. It cradles the wrist really, really well. I always had comfort issues with the previous model, so I sold mine a few years ago. I also had a chance to try the Sedna Gold version at the Omega Boutique here in Vancouver. Wow! Cheers, Carl
Like almost every watch enthusiast I caved and bought a Speedmaster Professional (back when they were still reasonably affordable and widely available in good condition for one-third of current MSRP). I enjoyed wearing it and seeing what the fuss is about. But even though I love the 60's chronograph aesthetic the way this particular watch is forced down the throat of any aspiring collector like a goose fed for its foie gras started bothering me. I know this is the watch to gain entry into the club but I'd rather opt out. I don't wear cardigans anyway.
I recently received one as a gift. I'm not sure what the problem is... The edges may be a bit sharp, but I purposefully tried to cut myself with it to no avail lol. Either someone's wrist is a massive sausage, or they've been looking hard for something to fault this watch on. If that's the only thing you can fault this watch on (a non-issue for me so far), then I'd say this evolution is pretty solid.
Jack is pleasant to listen to and is super knowledgeable. However, he didn't mention one negative aspect about the watch or the wearing experience, which made it feel more like a commercial. At least comment on the press around the extremely sharp edges on the bracelet that could affect daily wearability.
How does the 3861 rate vs 9300? I have both and they are equally spectacular but I’m interested in an informed evaluation/comparison of the two movements.
thank you. great review. you mentioned how much more flexible the new bracelet is. i thought it's the opposite. i was told the new bracelet has less play. but why they made it this way ??!. in a few years of wear. it'll be even more flexible. and the watch head will sag on the wrist and will look odd.

Me personally, I really do not care about the technical improvements. It is handy but for me it is not a decider to buy it. I prefer 1861 dial but 3861 bracelet would probably tip the scale.
I haven't seen any reviews where the sharp edges and the fake watch feel was not mentioned. This is the first one. I kinda expected an honest opinion, not a commercial presentation.
I have enjoyed my Speedmaster Hexalite. Approved by NASA. Was on the Moon. Contributed to the successful return of the Apollo 13 crew. Yet it needs to be improved. What the Hell.
How are the edges of the watchcase, are they smooth or as many have reported rather sharp? Once stores reopen I’ll have a look in the dealers and see for myself but to be honest the new Zenith looks a better bet and is probably where my money will go.
@@solo-xbt But I'm a poor man, and the Zenith is a good look and it has a few very useful features that the Daytona just hasn't got, namely; a good price, a display back to see that movement, a date function, an instantly usable chronograph and most importantly, its available to buy. So I will happily be the wearer of a poor man's Daytona and be proud to do so. For me the Zenith is the better watch, others may disagree.
HOUSTON, WE HAVE A PROBLEM. I held 4 of these in my hands- from 2 different AD's-in 2 different states. The fit and finish is sub par and reminiscent of cheap knock off's. The edges on the case are sharp enough to literally cut into your skin if pressure is applied. The bracelets have equally interior fit, feel and finish.

Tried one on at the Omega boutique yesterday. Compared to the previous generation it felt far more delicate...not a good thing. Maybe it’s the bracelet, but it just didn’t feel right.
I had that Swatch called Omega, too. After changing the movement and call it Swatch in Real Life, I decided to send it back to Nick H via his sister Nayla that lives in the next village and from whom I bought my last Porsche Cayenne (it stays by my side).The question is why Nick and Nayla let their manager ruine the brand Omega?
