Horn Introductions: Couesnon Bb Flugel
Episode 6.
This is the one flugel that anyone who is serious about their flugel playing should own at least once in their lifetime.
The understated, yet well loved Bb Flugel from Couesnon.
(It's like the alfa romeo of sports cars)
Note: Audio on the video is from an on-camera microphone - I will try and upload the separate audio track from the mic as a separate link soon.

Any time I hear a Couesnon I instantly think of Tom Harrell’s playing. He’s used his for over 50 years. Very lush tone.

He's a living legend - no doubt.

Nice. My first was purchased new (1965) at your low end $$$ NoVA / DC area. Recently, graduated to hub van Laar B1. Also very special sound!!! Better valves. Prettier. Haven't played Monople. Section mate has one. Loves it; might not sell also.

Thank you for sharing. They really are a great flugel that many people can use for years and years - in your case more than a few decades. I think the Couesnon is a great horn all round - but I do admit there are better options available today if you are looking to upgrade.

I have a 1950 French Besson Brevette, same model Art Farmer played. Similar wrap to this and plays beautifully - in fact the most in-tune Flugel I’ve ever had. Tried a few modern ones and not found anything with the same sound, although Eclipse make a great modern one.

nice and breathy tone...like the old cornets, but a bit more mellow

The Couesnon are so inconsistent in quality since they are build over such a long period of time. Are monopole the ones to get? Found a Star model. How do they compared to Selmer that Chet Baker plays?

what flugelhorn mouthpiece did you play in the horn?

Too bad that factory burned down. I visited Chateau Thierry severel times but didn’t know of Couesnon then.

No trigger for D notes ?

I would certainly recommend a trigger for anyone considering one. (My techs are a little too far away for me these days). Thanks for checking out the video.

Pebble Beach, I had a Yamaha 3rd trigger installed on my 1931 Couesnon Flugelhorn in Bloomington, Illinois by Travis at Carl's Pro Band. They did a great job, and the horn has been run through a lot of different applications/genres/styles over the 3+ years I've been playing on it.
