I love how paintings can be so messy and blobby but still somehow look just as beautiful as real life 😄

That's definitely why painting is way better when you're painting what your eye sees, not what the camera sees. You can interpret values in a much wider range than your camera does the second the shutter clicks.

I used to think being a good artist was how photo realistic you could get it but i find that boring and you might as well take a photo instead. For me good art is how expressive it is with loose confident brush strokes.

Sometimes you just need to paint and keep painting until you are happy with the results but keep in mind ...most artists don't like their own work from time to time... believe me I know. This guy... just has one hell of a way to teach and it's very effective!

I did some of Chris' courses and it really helped me to up my skill level in painting. I love the style of expressive painting that Chris has, and his teaching is so well organized and presented. On a personal note it is also nice to see a fellow 'jock' breaking the stereotype of the 'arteest'. This is another excellent video. I have gone from painting an hour a day to two hours a day and can't stop. First exhibition will be end of the year. Thanks Chris, you da man.

Thank you for this tip! I've been struggling with landscape/scenery paintings for EVER, and I feel like part of the problem is, exactly as you said, that I keep trying to copy the photo and become paralyzed by all the details that I feel like I MUST include. Thank you for giving me the permission to NOT do that haha. I'm gonna go get painting now.

You have such a great way of explaining things with simplicity. I can watch your 8minute video- glued to the screen, absorbing, and then I can leave with the motivation to test the technique(s) out in a painting. You’ve really found a sweet spot. Thank you for sharing your wisdom ♥️

Timely and so informative! I just painted my largest painting yet, a 12 by 36 featuring a gravel road with puddles in the sun but surrounded by the green grassy, weedy landscape receding into the distance….organizing the landscape into simplified shapes to show recession is a wonderful lesson for me that I will use on my next painting! Thank you!

thanks so much. I love painting landscapes, but I never know how to start. I learn: translate and don't just copy what you see. In the beginning draw only shapes, no details. use flat colors. the foreground is much darker than the background organize the scene in different levels of distance. red and yellow disappear in the background which becomes more blue. Don't paint trees at the beginning, only shapes., contours atmosphere: colors, values, edges simplicity more value contrast in the foreground than in the background Light and shadow in photos are not the same as in a painting. keep everything more fuzzy in the background. details in the foreground.

hey Chris, I need your help with something. So recently i gessoed a canvas and decided to paint on it. But the paint is being very sheer & transparent on it, instead of opaque & pigmented. Not to mention, that i also added water to the gesso while gessoing it. Do you happen to know why is that happening? Why is the paint being sheer and not pigmented? Adding a medium makes it even more thin. Please help here. Because im beginning to think that not gessoing a canvas was better, because atleast it helped the paint to stick to the canvas (which shouldn't be good)

Hello paint coach, do you know how I can prevent my oil paintings from having thicker impasto like texture on one area and then thinner flatter paint texture on other areas? For instance imhaving problems finding thicker clouds or thicker water but rest look thin and not impasto. I try not to do it but it always turns out that way. I don't like how the surface texture is different from place to place and want an even surface texture. Do you think this is acceptable? Do you have any tips? Anyone? Thank you.
