Today I visit the Welsh coast to photograph the start of storm Ciaran, it was an incredible day of photography with some tasty conditions. Along the way, I talk about one camera lens I just couldn't be without.

I love my Tamron lenses. The 28-200 is the one I use as my single lens option (hiking). Small and lightweight. I also have the 50-400. Both are very sharp and I love the versatility. Thanks for the video. I think this channel is getting better and better for each video 🙂📸

That's interesting! I find myself with my 24-105 f4 L lens on mostly. I only have that one and my Sigma 150-600 C for sports and wildlife. Thanks for your video!

Totally agree about the standard zoom. I bought one pretty quickly after getting a Sony APSC and discovering the kit lens is shite. I went for the Sigma 18-50 f2.8 which is an incredible lens. I have had people assume I was using primes, because this lens is that good. It's also compact and lightweight, something I appreciate as I am not as young as I was. The only downside is no stabilisation, and - as I am going for lightweight - I now avoid carrying a tripod (even though I have a nice Manfrotto). I do have a carbon fibre monopod which doesn't weigh much and it helps. But mostly I just try to make sure the shutter is fast enough to avoid problems.

I think they make that lens for the fuji system too, i would love to give it a try, it's highly regarded 👍
@TimvanderLeeuw
@TimvanderLeeuw 11 месяцев назад
@@ian_worth They do indeed also make that lens for the Fuji system, although I haven't tried it myself it is interesting because it is a lot smaller and lighter than "The Brick" 16-55mm f/2.8.

While my interest in photography came during the digital era, I have most recently moved into film photography. One excerise I used to enjoy while shooting digitally was to head out with a prime lens, most often a 35mm and shoot a theoretical 12 exposure roll of “film” . I found limiting my options in both lenses and exposures forced me to look harder and and consider my shots more carefully. Now a days, armed with a film camera and a single lens ( most often a 50mm full frame equivalent) the lack of gear options to consider seems to simplify the process and allows me to consider the compositional options rather than lens options. When I saw the title of the video I wondered which focal length ( prime)lens you were drawn to. Of course a zoom lens provides the equivalent of several primes and as such it represents the range of focal lengths you utilise most frequently. Thanks for the great video.

Wow, you got some great shots there. Loved the mono sky shot, and the red cliffs, gorgeous light for that last shot. I tend to use my 24mm for seascapes but my 24-200 is the lens that is used most.

My Sony 18-105mm F4 seems to live on my a6700 most (and on the ZV-E10 before it) and most of my shots are in the 30-40mm range - curious... (Brilliant video, as always!)

I've been using a Sigma 17-70 on APS-C cameras for more than fifteen years. It's always been a very good value lens and I really like that range. But I'm starting to think I'd like to get a little better glass. Since I have a Canon DSLR (and my photography doesn't justify really expensive gear) I've been thinking about maybe a good used Canon 24-70 f/4 L zoom. I'd lose 7mm off the wide end, but would gain better glass and coatings (plus IS).

Nice shots and interesting discussion about focal lengths. Looking over my stuff, I think I tend to be all over the place but more on the extremes ends. I too go for more natural rather than epic shots and like you, like to focus on drama, mood and telling a story. Looks like it was worth braving the wind and tides!

Some cracking shots again Ian, lots to explore down that coastline! I think most of my favourites were made at a round 50mm (ff) to mild telephoto generally. I used to like using a super telephoto but I've kinda grown a bit tired of that very compressed look, except for abstracts.

In order to improve your photography, perhaps you should leave that home for a month, and use your least-used lens instead. My favourite lens is the one on my camera. I rarely change in the field, often the lens is a prime.

Thanks, Ian! I have a 24-70mm f2.8 and tend to gravitate to the 33-42 range mostly. It the one lens that is on 90% of the time. I was wondering if I use the 33-42 range because I appreciate it more or did I grow into that range based on comfort level and distance to the subject. Either way it works out.

Hi Ian, probably a good idea to get yourself some cheap wrap around safety glasses from Screwfix etc when on the beach in windy conditions. A grain of wind borne sand can scratch your eye and is very inconvenient not to mention uncomfortable. Great content tho, sick of watching the American equivalent channels.👍

Nice video. Thought provoking. I like to take more natural landscape shots similar to yours (though not as good). I enjoy the 'wow' of some landscape photography on here but then as I continue to look it crosses my mind that the colours and sharpness are often unnatural and that tends to turn me off.

For a single camera and lens, I seem to pick up my OM-1 with the M.Zuiko 12-100 f4 Pro. If I need more telephoto, I will use the M.Zuiko 12-200 but I definitely prefer the IQ of the 12-100. I also like to carry an infrared converted camera, for m43 that would be the Panasonic G95 with the Panasonic 12-32 pancake zoom.

I very much enjoy you narration of what and how you are doing what you are. I have not played very much with the filters that you mentioned in this shoot. So because you were shooting into bright light, the density filters allowed you to slow down the shutter speed without having to stop way down in aperture? Can you explain this a little bit more please?

I have done Landscape Photography since 1979, I do not like zoom lenses for Landscape, I bring 2 or 3 prime Lenses, some times several prime Lenses. Zoom lenses are expensive, heavy and never as good as a prime Lens. Zoom lenses also tens to make you lazy, with a prime Lens you put more effort in getting the right image, it is a great joy to use prime Lenses.

This is subjective for sure.....ever been on a boat where the sun is at the nightly golden hour setting into oblivion. A zoom brings the horizon right up close and makes for outstanding photos.
