The one Rock Singer I Can’t Stand!
Hey everybody,
Michael here with the one singer in Rock who’s very voice sends me near to drink! Who is it? Well here another clue for you all, he is considered by most Rock critics to be one of Rock greatest vocalists of all time!
No accounting for taste I guess!
Anyway, I can pretty much guarantee that this video will cause some debate! But that’s OK, respectful debate is what makes for a great and free society!
Hope you enjoy!
Michael Noland

Rod singing Maggie May and the A Nod Is As Good As A Wink album has me liking Rod in spite of his choreography era. Robert Plant started out with that great bluesy voice, able to push out notes that most humans could only hope to reach. Strong voiced, he then sang his voice until it was merely a memory of what it had been. After years of still creating music after Zep he found his own range and style again and has been creating music which takes all of his prior influences and puts them into his current efforts, most of which are critical successes. He sings duets with women artists. He sings what is essentially rockabilly at times. He has grown into his current version of himself naturally and his ability to blend different types of music together and create his own distinct music, which does not contain his old voice at all, produces music which is entertaining, sometimes heartbreaking and always mesmerizing, at least it is to me. Robert Plant is nothing like he was in the 60's and 70's and that is the way it should be. He can still sing like he used to, but why would he want to? His new music, from the 80's until current era, is always growing and expanding his horizons. Axl Rose? Got bathroom tissue handy? You will need it to feel clean again after listening to the bathroom sounds that leak from his vocal orifice.

I saw Mr. Plant back in 2013 and the concert was very good. He did a very nice remix of some LZ tunes and managed to raise the hair on the back of my neck several times during the concert. I agree with your assessment of his natural vocal development during aging.

Hey Michael, I can appreciate what you are conveying in this video. And I think you landed right on top of one of the undenyable aspects of having a successful rock band- and that is the importance of how well someone can sing, like hitting all the correct notes and all, can almost be forgotten by many fans as long as they make up for it in unique delivery, having their personality really shine through, and other things that make a bands front-man appealing. Alot of people used to say David Lee Roth was not a very good singer, but nobody ever said he was not top notch entertainer. -Cheers.

I agree about DLR. I also give him credit for helping make a genuine guitar god, EVH, a mainstream attraction. Without Dave, I suspect EVH would have ended up like Steve Vai, Eric Johnson or even Joe Satriani or Roy Buchanan and Danny Gatton. Agree agree agree. Michael just discovered your channel and we have the same taste! They have 3 albums and made it into the RR Hall. They don’t deserve it…to me. Bands from the seventies earned it. Robert Plant has a beautiful soulful blues voice. When he was younger he pushed to too far..everyone did. Not many singers can go from Whole Lotta Love to Thank You to Ramble on in 1 album. He used different textures, timbres and colors to combine with the bands sound of each song. He changed often from song to song. He also has a terrific Elvis like baritone when jamming. I still believe he is underrated. His voice changed through the seventies with age and he transformed his singing. Axel…oh lord he is so bad and has sounded the same from day one. Like a cat getting electrocuted. No feel. No soul. He is not connected to the band or Slashes guitar. There is tension. Not good tension. Like he’s on his own…fck the band.

Spot on! Even below average singers can make it work within the emotion of the song. We don't expect perfection. We expect an emotional connection to the music, which can further effect the emotions of the listener. In fact, it's probably better to have a raw voice singing emotion than it is to have a polished voice. It makes the song feel all that more genuine.

Geddy Lee is another example. His voice is odd but fits the music of Rush perfectly.

I couldn't STAND Led Zeppelin for over a decade as a kid because I couldn't get past Robert Plant's voice. It wasn't until he put out his solo albums in the mid to late 1980s that I realized what a marvelous voice he had. It still took me a few years to revisit Led Zep's work and learn to appreciate it, but I consider myself a fan now. Had a similar experience with RUSH. Geddy Lee's VERY high voice grated on me and I couldn't get past it to the music underneath. This last for 20 years of my youth, but after listening to Neil Peart's drum work, I was able to process their music in a different light. That said, I will NEVER like Axl Rose's voice. I'm a painter, and I always felt, whenever I could bring myself to listen to that squawky voice of Roses', that you can have all the colours in the world on your palette, but if you don't have the instinct and ability to use them in conjunction with all of the other elements of pictorial construction, well, you might as well just throw it all on and hope for the best. Rose is like that. Throws everything into it every time--all the same tired, old frigging vocal tricks, and you're lucky if it sounds any good or any different to the last half dozen songs you've just heard him sing. Which is a shame, because the other band members are pretty awesome--mostly.

Lots of rock singers had great ranges and great voices but time and not taking care of their voices eventually caught up with them. Paul Stanley has to lip sync now and Vince Neil has to have someone else sing high notes for him. I remember, back in the 80’s, an opera singer complimented many rock vocalists on their singing but warning them that they needed to take better care of their voices if they wanted to keep it going as they got older.

For years I could not listen to The Cure because of Robert Smith.

You nailed it w Axl Rose. Just think, the superb Bobby Tench sang back up vocals and some lead flourishes while in a band with THE best vocalist of them all--Steve Marriott.

While you were building up to your big reveal, everything you said totally called out Sting to my ears. I know lots of people think he's a great singer (not to mention bassist, band leader, and composer, on which I agree) but Sting's high-pitched vocals always sound like he's straining to reach the top of his range. I much prefer his soft-spoken ballads.

When I was in Stuttgart in the '70s I saw the core of the Police band (before they became The Police) open for an experimental electronic prog-rock pioneer named Eberhart Schoner. A few songs in, the Germans were getting very anxious listening to the lead singer with the screechy Mickey Mouse voice. The entire auditorium eventually erupted in an overpowering chant. I asked my German wife what they were yelling and she said, "HALT!" Apparently they don't "Boo" there, they "Halt." The band had to stop, and Eberhart Schoner trotted out with his entourage and announced, "I was feeling the same way - let's get on with it!" The impressive thing was, Sting and his bandmates stayed onstage and became the rhythm section for a total science fiction adventure into sound. It was truly fantastic. Always respected Sting from that night forward.

A friend of mine was a front of house engineer for many Rod Stuart shows. He said he always sang in tune but was one of the quietest singers he ever mixed. Was always a challenge when the band was loud.
