Actually, the Psychic Medical Medium Edgar Cayce DID read books, that way! He would place a book under his pillow each night at bedtime. And absorbed all its contents and knowledge by the time he woke up in the morning!
I feel like I enjoy slow reading. It allows me to appreciate the writing style of the author, along with understanding what the author is trying to convey.
@@michellelee487 Totally agree about reading to enjoy and appreciate! Then, I also like sharing the books I have found appealing. I tried speedreading at uni in the sixties. I could not make it work! İt totally spoilt every type of story İ approached this way. Woody Allen sums it up for me.
I'm the same, reading like that bicycle analogy sounds really kinda stupid to me, what's the point of reading the book at all if you're just blasting through to say you finished it? I'm a slower reader than average, I find reading a lot in a day even if I'm enjoying the book can lead to burnout for me. I'm coming up on a month reading Moby Dick, something like 20 pages per day, whereas other books I've read like 60-120 pages per day. But you can't rush Moby Dick.
@@razorboii864 I think it went pretty well, considering a "normal" year would most likely have me read much less. I read 40 books that first year but dropped to 38 the following year. Not a book a week, but still pretty good. Hoping this year will be better but I need to figure out ways to mitigate the abundant distractions that I am exposed to.
@@NelsonDellis is there a way to have a constant peg for letters to remember as you do for numbers? Making up a peg on the go is always time consuming as in my job I need to constantly remember mixed number and letter combinations regularly.
I just force myself to sit down and read a chapter, and i dont let myself stop unless i finish the chapter, but when i do that i sometimes “accidentally” read like 3 chapters, doing that made me finish harry potter and the sorcerers stone in like a week
Awesome tips, Nelson! I remember using this method once when I needed to have read a certain book by a set date. But to use this technique in general to get a lot of books read inspires me to go to my bookshelf and start picking out a few.
This sounds like a genius idea. I mean, I’m a med student, and have very little free time each day, yet I’m a book nerd and have roughly 80 books I wanna read (fiction and non-fiction). And tbh, just out of laziness and being tired from work, I usually can’t bring myself to reading non-work related books. But doing this marking and segmenting thing can allow me to be less intimidated of starting, and thinking I won’t be able to finish it, while being easy enough that even during my busiest days I can always find the time to read, like 50 or 60 pages a day
Something that’s helped me finish a book fast and effective (retained information), is combining both physical and audio and cranking the reading to 2x+ speed. Works amazing for me
I do it too, I'm trying to become a minimalist so I don't buy physical books I use audiobooks and digital books and sometimes I read with 2x speed to finish books quickly (especially those I don't like) but sometimes some books needs you to be more focused while reading them, otherwise I end up not knowing what happened in that chapter so I'll have to reread it 😅
This guy is crazy! How awesome you are to finish so many books in a week. My problem is no matter how much I love a book, I don't know how to finish it.
I’ve watched a bunch of videos on RU-vid with advice on how to read more, and this was the only one that gave tangible steps and that I’ll actually try. Thanks!
"Look at how many pages and divided by 7 and use these labels" .......That is so simple yet so brilliant. I don't know why I don't do that now. This is why I should be reading more books.
No, it's not. It's literally a reading schedule for grade schoolers. Did the concept of breaking a book up into manageable chunks over a week seriously not occur to you? Are you 10?
One thing: This works really well if you tend to read shorter books. But if you're like me, and you like to read really long, epic fantasy books or something, that can get up to 1000 pages or more, try breaking your reading down into even longer increments of time. So, instead of trying to finish 1000 pages in a week (which seems really daunting), try to finish it in TWO weeks. Now you'll feel less overwhelmed, but you're still making good progress.
Great tip Nelson. What really helped me finishing books was... One piece. One piece is really big, currently on episode 1060, manga also really big. Most of people give up on first episodes because the "omg, so much, it will take me one years or more." Well, after sometime i saw the advantages. I allways have something to watch and no need to rush. Basicly appreciation. And that helped me not only in finishing books, but also in other things like learning skills.
This truely helps! Idk how but I’m somehow sort of “currently reading” 4 books, lately it’s been the one that I’m over halfway through and I started it most recently. For the others I’ve somewhat started I might reread what I “already read and probably forgot” and try this method of having set increments!
this is such a good tip. i aim to read 25 books this year which is impressive for me cus last yr i did 15 and usually it takes me 2-3 months to finish a typical 400 page book lol this tip deffo gonna help me
Your idea is great if it is a book you are enjoying. I will DNF books that I am not interested in or enjoying. There are too many books on my TBR to waste my time on the ones I am not engaged in. One should never force themself to finish a book!
I'm going to try this right now and see if it works for me. I have few books I want to finish before the year ends. I took audio books off my 'read' list this year but I think I will add them back next year.
It's interesting that reading a book has become such a chore within our society. Before the development of the Internet, more specifically the WWW as we know it today, I would crave every book and magazine I could get my hands on to seek out knowledge. Now everything you could ever what to know is on the Internet and in multiple forms...photos, videos, lectures, articles, historic documents, podcasts, interviews, opinion pieces, etc. Some futurists say we will evolve to where we spend very little time reading anything at all, everything will be AI/voice/video/GUI based, and I can see that.
Good tip :-) And it is Christmas, so did you start reading Harry Potter? I started to read it in Finnish this Christmas. Ben je begonnen Harry Potter te lezen met kerstmis?
WOW GREAT TIPS. A lot of videos give generic advice but I love the fact you gave practical advice. I’m also very visual and seeing the tabs on the books will deffo help me. I can’t wait to try this
Ali's metaphor is terrible. If you ride a bike fast, you aren't hoping to retain any of your bike ride. You aren't concerned about details that don't directly relate to the route. And nobody says you rode a bike ineffectively if you can't remember anything about it. Reading is inherently observational, retentive, and detail-oriented. Even stories. The best that can be said about reading is that you tend to do it faster if you do it a lot. I can get through a 500 page book in an afternoon. You know why I don't? Because books have tempos that you need to match to read them. I could probably read the entire Bible in a week. Do you honestly believe that it would be time effectively spent? It matters how you read and what you read. It doesn't matter more than the fact of you're reading. But it absolutely matters after that. Because this culture has so much trouble getting people to start on the ladder, they pretend further steps don't exist.
But... the whole point of fiction is to smell the roses. It's meant to be relaxing and enjoyable. Makes no sense to read fiction to get from A to B (unless you're being made to read it for school or something).
You zoomed into my class today and answered our questions in French about memory and climbing and everything thanks so much we loved having you PS I was the kid who asked why you spent 5000$ and just put it on your credit card
I have a minimum of 50 pages every day. That way I can easy calculate MAX days it’ll take to finish. If I only read my minimum requirement, I’ll still get further into the book. I used to have “at least one chapter a day,” but that made it so easy to skip days because it’s “just one chapter”
thanks finally a video where the dont talk aboiut speedreading. i done it multiple times already and everytime speedreading two or three books i gave up. i hate speedreading because it feels like rushing it. i only read at my own pace. that beeing said, this is a good strategy but how about bigger books? i'm talking about 600 pages and up. how you read more than 100 pages without speedreading and with minimal time? its impossible i know. but for smaller books this could be a fun strategy. thanks!
I have often done the exact same thing. Or, if I have longer books, I will mark off 50 page sections. I read 61 books last year. I don't listen to many audiobooks.
Nelson, i love this video. I love to read and i do some of this as well. I have OCPD(Mild OCD w/ multiple minor obsessions). There's was one thing that bugged me about this video and if possible would like to see it fulfilled. That Harry Potter book had a torn page. That's it... If you can just tape it, that'd be great. Thank you for the wisdom, have a great weekend.
@@NelsonDellis Aah, i see. I actually watched that small part like three times and realised the corner was missing. At first i thought it was flapping, which is why i messaged you. Then i realised the corner wasn't there, but i didn't message again just in case you'd fix it😁..
Terrible advice. 50 pages a day is akin to reading none at all. If important books is your objective, then a digestible amount is critical, as the analysis and thinking and writing and personal reflections done after are nearly as important as the reading itself. Books should not be consumed like movies, unless you are reading "fun" books. Synthesizing information or greater world truths is unattainable if you are racing.
I like to read books on strategy and politics, but I dont remember anything after i finish reading. Now I feel like if I am not going to remeber anything than why read.?
Hi! I’m sorry for asking a question that is not about this topic, I also totally understand that an answer is not probably gonna come and that possibility of you replying would be higher if I text you on Instagram(but I don’t have one ). But after all those thoughts I’ve decided to give it a try and ask you for advice . I’ve always had a kind of ,,good memory” I mean at a age of 7 I could remember 4 pages of book in 3 days or so and I understand that there are lots of people also called geniuses😀 that might say that it’s not good enough and it’s normal, but now when I am older a lot of people notice that I can remember a lot and they can’t. I’ve never heard about something called the Memory Championship, but after finding it and also seeing disciplines I was just impressed how many people are similar to me and that memory can be the whole discipline same as sports or math. Than my silly idea came. Oh, let’s just try to be like them! Such a great idea for someone that had never thought about memory as something that can be improved and something I can be good at😀. I started to notice things around me and started to memorize them, I actually started to memorize everything I could after reading or seeing something. And I totally understand that it’s very silly, but it’s better than nothing. One day I decided to memorize the whole pack of cards and I had never done it before so it took me about an hour. And here is a point of this whole message😀. I can remember those cards, but it takes some time(as I’ve mentioned ). After that hour(or less now) I can name all of the cards, I could see them in my mind and also see myself putting them next to each other in my head. If you would ask me which card was 13th, I could say it without any problem and also name all the cards from the end to the beginning. Same with cards with numbers(it takes me even shorter). I want to ask you for advice, because I feel alone among the others who are impressed even with naming a pack of cards😂.I’ve heard about memory palace and I want to learn how to use it. But my photo memory isn’t bad at all. If I would be on the level of participant that is in memory championship(which is unbelievable and definitely hard to achieve), is it non sense to not use memory palace?, is it better to use both(photo memory and palace too)? Because I can remember numbers numbers with photo memory and cards, but when I see some symbols I try to change them into a story or to replace them with something that reminds me of them around me. I also wanted to ask you how did you started and with what techniques, how was it at the beginning maybe some tips,...? I am very sorry, but I am very lost and I’ve started all alone last month, so I am totally new in this and I would be incredibly thankful for your reply. Because I LOVE the memory, how it can just change our whole lives! Thank you very much! And also sorry if I made some mistakes, but English is my third language 😀. P.S.: I actually don’t go to RU-vid that often, so if you decide to make my day happier(super ultra happier) you can reply on sofi132453@gmail.com (or even here, just reply😀), if not thank you anyways!
