My parents live in a modest (for this area) house along a ridge overlooking this monstrosity. At first we had no idea what they were building. There were three “small” houses there before which they took out then dug all hell out of the hill. About 15 concrete pilings were installed, wrapping around the hill (like you see holding up an elevated freeway) which supports one whole end of the structure. Then it just went on and on for years. At night it’s lit up like a UFO landing pad.

The irony is that "modest" house almost certainly costs the same as a mansion in low cost of living areas. Not knocking your parents. More the insane housing prices. I don't know how big your parents house is, but the thing about any large house is that it needs to be used, or just becomes a pain to maintain for no benefit. Meanwhile, this thing can act as a hotel!
@guerralg63
@guerralg63 Год назад
Not that I lived in these neighborhoods ever, but Beverly Hills, Holmby Hills, and Bel Air had the most beautiful homes that were large but had beauty and elegance. Then, all of a sudden, the compounds began to be built for these egomaniacal entertainers and corporate emperors. The results are that the beautiful homes that were not good enough for their monumental egos were demolished, and these concrete and glass mega monstrosities were built in their place. Yes! The super wealthy lived in these neighborhoods, but their lavish houses were still homes. Homes for them and their families to live in. These blocks of frigid cold ugliness are no better than some hotel, albeit an expensive hotel to stay in for a few days. I can't imagine staying more than a few days, much less live there day after day. This place is cold and lonely looking. Remember, this building was built for 1 person to live in with perhaps a boy or girlfriend to visit from time to time. This place doesn't even allow for a nursery. Nothing about says families welcome. It's such a vanity project that you can almost equate it to those buildings called follys. They were built for no apparent reason. The truly sad thing is that every time they build a new home in these 3 neighborhoods, they lose a bit of their charm and glamor. I know things change, but not always for the better.

To be somewhat fair to Nile Niami, I believe he had been quite successful in building and selling high end homes built on speculation, costing tens of millions of dollars. At the time it wasn't clear where the limit of the market was. The 500 million price tag had always been aspirational and intended to generate media buzz. Without the delays, construction cost of "The One" would probably have been between 100 and 150 million, so even a huge discount on the asking price could have generated a nice profit. I don't think he was the only one overestimating the demand for 100 million + properties. Other developers have built some super penthouses to tap the imaginary billionaire's market that turned out to be harder to sell than anticipated.

LA passed a law a couple of years ago that requires additional review for single family residences over 17,500 ft². This was in reaction to an increasing number of homes like the Wish house (10979 Chalon Rd) with 26k ft², 5 bars, 3 swimming pools, night club, 32 bathrooms +++. Single family residence? The Duggers couldn't fill that thing! When Niami was selling The One he bragged that you couldn't legally build that house today. That's a good thing. Commercial events centers do not belong in residential neighborhoods.
@dododge9428
@dododge9428 Год назад
Bel Air also has an HOA, and I recall an article where they made it clear that they would never allow the house to be used n any sort of commercial manner (and that they have previously forced at least one other brand-new giant house they had issues with to be torn down). The "night club" space is also almost certainly skirting zoning laws even just sitting there unused; when Niami gave a tour of the place to another channel it was noticeable that despite being part of the structure it didn't seem to be accessible from the rest of the house without going outside -- though he had a strategically-placed long hallway that dead-ended at a blank wall adjoining the club, and implied he was going to punch a hole through as soon as the inspectors had signed off on the existing floor plan.

As someone who spent about 10 years of their early professional life helping build custom homes in the US, one thing is absolutely true: there is an inverse relationship between a person's wealth and a sense of taste. For some reason the moment they get enough money to build a 4000 ft^2/370 m^2 home they just bazaar shopping on styles, or decide on no style and is an austere hospital. East Mediterranean, sure. Tudor, why not? French country, might as well. And then they slap it on like a stickers and finish it off with a 3-4 car garage that eats up 60% of the front facade. But dream on..
