Proud to be the 777th like! i never watched this show, so when i heard you say "Ryukyu" it felt like i got hit by the isekai truck 🤣 My family is indigenous, but my big brother and i was born in the USA as first-generation here. We are Uchinanchu, our home was Uchina, which is historically known as Ryukyu and later the Okinawan Islands. Just wanted to make it clear, in case there was any confusion: The show was not historically accurate; Ryukyu was not a prison island, but rather a merchant kingdom. Women weren't property; quite the contrary, in fact. The way my family likes to put it is "Two sides of the same coin", meaning that men and women were equal and simply filled different roles. Men were the brawn and women were the brains. The man brings home money from his labors, then gives it to the woman because she knew best what to do with it and the home was her sacred domain. My family was actually part of the higher class, with the women being Noro; high ranking spiritual leaders with supernatural skills unique to each woman. That part of our history is in our DNA, and though i identify as agender i am proud to have inherited it- eeeeeven if i still haven't mastered it like my mom and her mom and so on; i know it comes with age and experience. The genocide of my people by the Japanese officially started when my great grandmother was a little girl, and her mother had told her that if she had just been born a little sooner she could've had a better life. She never got her coming of age hand tattoos, she never got to be a spiritual advisor, she had to learn Japanese because speaking Uchinaaguchi in public wasn't safe anymore. Things only got worse then WW2 happened; by then great-grandma had married and my grandma was a little girl. They had a farm and a nice home and lived comfortably before the war. The Japanese soldiers did unspeakable things, including having used my people as meat shields, dead or alive, and outright killed anyone caught speaking our own damn language. To my family, they took EVERYTHING that wasn't nailed down- including all the crops in the field -leaving them to starve. After the war, my grandmother watched other Uchinanchu get punished for speaking our language in class, so she never learned more than the basics and never ever spoke it outside the home. My mom was born and raised in our homeland, and to this day is homesick for it; in fact, she was so homesick while pregnant with me that i was born homesick for a home i still haven't been able to afford to visit and i know a lot of it as my family knew it is gone. There's a whole species of butterfly that went extinct and i'll never get to hold one like mom did. i hear the star sands are on the verge of destruction because tourists keep taking it. Apparently our ancestral turtleback tomb is on property owned by some rando, so even when i visit i'll have to track down the property owner just to visit my own family tomb, IF they let me on the property. TL;DR: My family is native to Ryukyu and it was a kingdom, not a prison island.

One of the worst things about the channel growing is that I do sometimes miss comments like this, or read them but don't get a chance to properly respond before they're buried further down. But, I always try to at least see them when I can, and I'm always glad when I do. I'm happy that I could truly help you in your situation, to know it's possible just from me talking about the things I love, and to an extent my own self and journey, is an amazing thing. I always like to stress though; the words I say are one thing, difficult in their own ways for sure, but the hard part is on the viewer and what they chose to do with them. I'm glad you were able to do that work and make something better for yourself. Don't forget to celebrate that for yourself too! : )

"Why are you still here?" Genuinely, I like your thoughts. I've watched many videos of yours and I love how you put together your thoughts. Your videos may be long, but they aren't drawn out, it feels like the just right amount of time needed for the topic at hand. I love how gently you talk about certain harsh topics, not necessarily glossing over them, but putting them out their in our faces in a way that doesn't seem forced at all. I find your voice relaxing and calming too. The way you talk about your own life as well, it helps show that not only are you talking from maybe a psychology or sociological way, but from personal experience as well. You make it easy for me to see those thoughts and feelings in my own life, or even plain experiences, and it helps me process what happened in a different light that helps me feel better about them. I appreciate your videos, your time, your thoughts, and your courage to be you so openly on the internet. Thats why I'm here. Keep being you, because you're doing it wonderfully.

This touched base with what I've been feeling for a very long time, especially with what you said in your outro. Since I was a child, I've always had a hard time adjusting to the world expected of me to participate in. I've always had too much Empathy, to a point where my heart aches for people some would consider evil. I've always been too into the spiritual, and the Philosophical. The subjective experiences that set our own lives apart from each other, but create the through thread of personal meaning. Work and making money matters very little to me. Rising up and taking a position at the top, even less. They say school prepares you for the real world. What it prepares you for is the world forged by greedy men. The world that has become callous and uncaring to things like Empathy, subjectivity, and the natural beauty in one another. After all...what is more profitable than opposition? What is more profitable than moralization? Than pain, so they can offer pleasure? I feel outcast for how I think and feel. I feel pushed away by the world because of how I see it, how I express. Freedom has ever been something I desire, but not this thing that is forced upon me to separate and stagnate those like me. Five years ago, I went to a Local Burning Man event. It was one of the best experiences of my life. It was a small thing, out in Minnesota. But it was beautiful. At the time, I was quite disillusioned with the world, having just turned 22 on that weekend. I hated what being an adult felt like, hated that I felt purely rejected by the world for who I was, hated the loneliness I felt for not having a place. And this event came at the perfect time. To me, it was what society should be. Money didn't matter, for everything ran on a gifting economy. Work helped the society you were in for the weekend, and it was short, but meaningful. People were kind and caring, fun, sweet, spontaneous and sharing. It was a mystical experience for me. It made me feel alive. It still feels like home to me, a home for the people forced to be free. Like Mugen and Jin, and Fu did. Then the weekend hit its end...and I was back in a world where everyone pretended to hate each other, where people can't find common ground with one another, even though almost all of us feel the same way. It hurts so bad. I'm going through more depression than I maybe ever have, since my Grandma passed away, and I went back to work. My creativity is the lowest it has ever been, and my sense of self is almost gone. Yet I look on those Halcyon days and think, that maybe, people could be Free, and Happy, if things were different. I hope to bring my Girlfriend to a Burn someday...because she is much like me, i think. Someone lost in the pain of a world that only seems to Reject.

The nature of mankind runs the gamut from meaningless to divine depending on who you ask, yet I often wonder how so much of our species is ok with never touching upon these subjects. For some I think it is fear, fear of the unknown and the absurd and yet for others like you, myself and many on this channel, it seems were born to question the things that most of humanity dare not seek out for fear that they may actually someday find an answer.

I do wish some of the characters and concepts had been more fully explored. I wanna know what happened with Yatsuha and Okuru and Koza, I wanna know what was up with Mugen countering that ki blast or whatever it was, I wanna know what the party does after the campaign is over, but also I get that that feeling is part of the point. The story is about these three and their interactions with each other, and when these three no longer interact, the story is over. Reminds me of Haibane Renmei in that regard-the show is about Reki and Rakka, so it begins when one of them arrives and ends when one of them leaves. On a tangentially related note, have you seen Mushishi? That series gives a similar feeling of having a brief look into someone's life, ending long before their adventure is over. I feel like you could get a good half hour of commentary on that show

The title alone hits a bit hard as someone with more "privilege" than modern society knows but less than they expected. Working class household, single mother raised me but living with my hard working father despite being an adult myself. I'm on the spectrum, considered smart enough to be independent yet the current economy is so f*cked up that we're in a steadily growing inflation with no easy to see end in sight, the amount of worked needed to make enough money to own a home being too much for a single person to make by themselves, or at least not legally and without good connections. Enough freedom to be anything I want but not enough freedom to be both happy and successful.

Its interesting to me that creators in this current system have to be supported by mostly people working these souless jobs. Maybe in an ideal work we could all do something that we are passionate about but also help with work that is nessary. Just spitballing

The fact that you are unaware that the Ryukyu Islands are Okinawa and were colonized the same way the Ainu were, not unlike the Nazi camps, kinda sucks. Yes it's anachronistic, but the idea of the Ryukyu being criminals on the whole is JP govt propaganda and you fell right into it. I have friends from there. There's an Indigenous population in the region. Sure they're Japanese citizens but they have their own culture. It's completely different from the mainland. :|

I researched it and didn't find any historical accuracy, which is why I stated it as "in the show's lore" or words to that effect, and also pinned a comment explaining that in detail from someone who better pointed it out, instead of my usual links. I could have done a bit more specific research, but I've done videos before where I trended the other direction, and got these same kinds of comments. I'm on a tight timeline just trying to make people think about things through stories; it's not easy to try and parse out how accurate people are being in their stories, and that's not what this video was about. I'll apologize for not making a better mention of it, because I certainly don't want to gloss over tragedy, but I wasn't making a historical video here

just a really random comment that you probably won't see but.. how can i understand and analyze media like you do?
@ProfessorViral
@ProfessorViral Месяц назад
Trial and error. I've been working on RU-vid for 9 years now, 4 of those doing the kind of stuff I make now. I look back on the analysis I made when I started, and most of it is surface level or plot summary, with a few good ideas here and there, and a lot of passion. I am the right kind of crazy to hyper focus on this stuff, and that really helps, but it's just like playing guitar or a sport or any skill, you grind away and it becomes more natural. The most solid advice I can give is start by understanding why you love your favorite story, because it's a topic youll dedicate to without a second thought

I love your videos. I recently discovered you a week or two ago and I'm making my way through your videos. You do an amazing job. Also i looked through and I was curious if you have done something similar to "what does it means to be a monster?" I noticed a video about fear of transformation from 6 or more months ago as well as "creating a monster" from two years ago. I havent gotten to them yet but I will check them out soon. Just food for thought. Thank you so much for making this content and I wish you the best as you continue through existence and life.

I think it's something that's mostly been touched on tangentially through videos like those, or the character profiles of Revy, Homura, and similar characters. Although, the making a monster one dealing with Black Lagoon is probably the most direct take. Not sure exactly since it was years ago, but I would probably be retreading some ground from that one

Your breakdowns always give me more to think about on this journey im on. Ever since the year i was born i never stayed in one place too long on average a year a few at most. So i can relate because the system is built for you to stay in one place. Not only the system but how normal people live their lives and judge who to let in theirs. Its been hard and lonely to try and connect with others. Ive fucked up and hurt people close to me because of how i came to be and the choices others made. But i cant afford to wallow in my self pity so I move on and Im often asked by the locals why am I even here. I literally dont know any other way of existing. i learned it wil be up to me to seize what i want i discarded and still trying to any habits or patterns that dont serve me regardless if its abnornal or strange no wonder i always loved samurari champloo not to mention nujabes' soundtrack since i was a kid ive always subconsciously gravitated to what i saw myself as. Almost like a self fulfilling proohecy as those things i gravitated to would influence me greatly.

It's a sad thing that we have to make the best of what we're allowed to find, as I don't think it should be how things are, but in our limited time and in our current world it's all we can do. In a way it's hopeful though, if enough people do it then that "normal" changes, at the very least

Ive have been different and in a way punished for being so for wanting to be so and growing up it was a internal struggle that eventually boiled over in a way. Then today as ive learned more and in a way gained the facilities to navigate and grown into myself more than i ever could. The main problem now is sturggleing to understand what that thing is and grasp it. That Thing is in a way what ive been fighting for my entire life if i truly wanted somthing i fight for it and i get it the hardest part is not knowing. I accept though without fighting for it whatever it is every step of the way i will in a way drown and die as well as never get there. It has happened, i have drowned before but I stand now. Wadeing through for my existence and for the one i wish to share it one day.
@teasub101
@teasub101 Месяц назад
Its hard sometimes, yet i learned that is ok now and sometimes instead of wadeing through one needs to float. But, its worth it whatever it is, and thats good enough for me. May i find one to float with one day.

“What does a view from a high place remind you of? The impulse you feel when you look down at the world you live in. A violent cognition that attacks you even if you refuse it. An emotion created by an overlooking view - That’s “far”. The scenery you see from a high place is magnificent. Even an ordinary landscape looks beautiful. But a vision that’s too large creates a boundary between you and the world. It’s more correct for you to recognize the large world you see as the world you live in, rather than as the small space around you. But you can’t feel that you’re living in this big world no matter how hard you try. Your reasoning represented by your knowledge, and you experience represented by your realization, will crash against each other. And eventually you will lose yourself and confusion will begin. Vision is not what your eyes see, but an image that your brain comprehends. People cannot survive outside their boxes, under normal circumstances.” - Touko Aozaki - Kara No kyoukai, Fuukan Fukei
