The Dolomites in north Italy is one of the most epic areas in the world to take landscape photos. On this year's photography tour I only brought two lenses. A 16-35mm and a 50-400. It felt odd breaking the "holy trinity of lenses", however, it worked out perfectly. We also got some incredible moody conditions and some beautiful golden hours with loads of colors!

I was in Dolomites last week and had three lenses with me (a 20-60mm f3.5-5.6 kit lens, a 70-200mm f4.0 and a 50mm f1.4). I could find an opportunity to use all of them! The weather on Lagazuoi was terrible last Wednesday; it was so cloudy that I could take only two-three photos there. It’s a pity that I only watched your video now! I was at Passo di Giago twice last week, took amazing photos but I really wish I knew about the pond there! Your photos from that perspective are amazing! 📸😍👍

You ask I comment and I feel proud of you more and more! Of the two I'd definitely go for the right one! I don't know, the cropped left picture of the same frame looks a bit more tightly framed than one on right in a relief it required, although this one could be compositionally cropped from the foregoing to get the balance right because of its being too static running left to right in the middle of the frame and in this aspect the left side picture has an edge over the right picture, but the fact that being tightly framed the burned out portion had become a distracting element in this picture giving a sense of imbalance in the overall color cast in the picture because it blended a little bit less than the entire frame and you can see this portion has been more blended in the right side picture! I found the picture an interesting study even though both the pictures are surrealistic in nature and the rocks form an interesting laying of a sculpture of a devine structure of a God kept in nature and it's more pronounced in the left side picture than the second because the symmetry has been beautifully maintained with the reflection in the water! But you could see this is somewhat squashed in the left side picture!

Hi, Mads. Why are you not just using profile correction for vignetting rather than shooting with the small aperture?

@MadsPeterIversen Год назад
It's not enough, the profile correction is rather useless... sadly...
@MadsPeterIversen

@MadsPeterIversen makes sense. I have the lens, but I haven't used it too much yet, so might not have noticed it. As a separate question. Do you miss the gap between the 35mm and 50mm? I have the 20-70mm f4 + 16mm f1.8 Viltrox to cover uw and astro instead of 16-35
@christophmunch4796

I don't bother with the remaining vignette after the automatic correction profile. It's not really relevant.

Should I get Tamron 50-400mm 1155g with A7RV 723g or Tamron 18-300mm (27-450mm) 620g with XT5/A6700 557g/493g mainly for photo and if I pair it with iPhone 15 13-52mm 171g for pocketable pic/vid stuffs and Panasonic HC-X1500 25-600mm 1200g camcorder with Zoom M3 mic 135g mainly for video? How about G9 II 658g with 50-200mm (100-400mm) 655g? Full frame Lumix, Nikon and Canon doesn't provide such focal lengths lens, right? Tamron 50-400mm I can crop a lot more, 2X or even 3X, but is it sharp enough to do so? Tamron 18-300mm I can have a 27mm everyday focal length and have native 50mm more tele but can't crop a lot more and quality control doesn't seem consistent base on reviews? They all have 1:2 macro, can I add extension tube to all of them to reach beyond 1:1 macro? Should I add ultra zoom lens but need to change lenses or the iPhone is enough you think? Should I get Tamron 17-50 or Sony 16-35 Power Zoom to pair with the 50-400, will the Sony one looks different rendering? Or should I get a fast ultrawide and just crop in? A7RV has the unique 4 was screen but not all video type get full sensor readout, XT5 has silver body color and dedicated tactile dials but will I use them much and I want realistic image color mainly, A6700 seem good grip but smaller EVF yet unpocketable, G9 II screen only go side way but it has 300 fps and has my favorite Yellow color as the menu theme!

@HR-wd6cw
@HR-wd6cw 11 месяцев назад
So with 16-35 and 50-400, you're not really missing much, and it almost makes a 24-105 or 24-70 redundant especially for landscapes where you're shooting at smaller f-stops (like f/5.6 and higher in many cases). I've thought about doing this dual setup with my Nikon system, except for that Nikon doesn't have a 50-400 but a 100-400 which would leave a decent gap from 30mm to 100mm, so until Tamron or someone else comes out with something like a 50-400 or even a 50-300 that's suitable for landscape, I may have to stick with my 3-lens setup for now (which covers all FLs from 14mm to 400mm, with a bit of overlap between each). I guess though while I would like a 16-35, the 14-30 is actually very useful especailly at 14mm (my only complaint is that the edges are not terribly sharp so I end up having to crop them out in many cases when shooting under 16mm). Nikon does have their older DSLR 16-35 which I may try, but optically their new Z 14-30 is supposedly sharper throughout in general, so it may be a tossup and not much of a gain trying to use their 16-35 (I lose 2mm on the wide end, gain 5mm on the long end, but may lose a bit of sharpness overall).

Hi Mads absolutely gorgeous pictures as usual of this famous location (EU people you don t need to go to US national parks to make good pictures). On the title « my only 2 lenses for landscape photography »… true that you only get two… but you are covering 16 to 400mm full frame… so 99% of the focal used by every photographer and 120 % of normal photographers :). On my side I am not convinced of the interest of 200 to 400 mm for landscape (you can crop) and I would prefer to use a 70-200 quicker and with less vigneting than the 50-400 which needs to make some compromises but is really good and relatively light for its capacities. On my side (and what could be called the combination of the poor photographer :)) would be a 20 or 24mm plus a 70-200 or 70-300 for the best compromise weigh/ coverage for landscape … and you must move :). If you really need a very wide focal, you put you normal wide lens in vertical, take 3 -4 pictures and assemble them with Lightroom. Continue to make us discover these epic (:)) areas. Cheers.

The 50-400 is a very nice lens, and I love mine. Won't be selling my 28-200 though. I just came back from a massive multiday hike in Lapland, and the 28-200 was my weapon of choice. I only wanted to bring one lens due to massive backpack (super heavy and little free space). Wish it was stabilised like the 50-400, but most of my shots were taken hand held and many of them on the longer side of the focal span. No bigger issues with a steady hand, most images where tack sharp with low ISO (100-200). Now I'm debating whether I should skip the tripod on my next bigger hike and bring the 50-400 instead. I'd miss the

Epic photos Mads! ;-) ❤ As to your question of which photo at 15:13 I prefer, that is a tough decision! Both are stunningly beautiful, but I think the 16mm on the left is my favorite. The LOCATION is gorgeous, and the sky enhances that. The photo on the right seems to have the SKY as the subject and not the location, which, as beautiful as they both are, it just seems like a disservice to the mountains to make them second fiddle. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m just starting out in photography, and I have already learned so much from you, Nigel Danson, and James Popsys. Thank you for all the amazing tips and tricks and the gorgeous locations!

Mads, very nice video. I prefer the 16mm landscape orientation to the portrait oriented panorama because the added detail of the pano adds no interest yet distracts from the interesting features (shoreline features and background mountains). I love my 4/16-35 PZ G and pair it with either the Tamron 28-200 or with the heavier but very useful Sony 4/70-200 Macro G. Rather than carry more weight, I settle for cropping 200mm 61mp images. (Maybe I'll later add a Sony 1.4x TC for the 70-200.)

I personnaly believe on the @15:13 time, with the 2 photos : the one on the right, stitched from multiple shots, have too much of sky and lake : maybe crop-out both of those areas quite a lot to bring the features of the mountain a bit closer to the top and bottom edges (not too close... but maybe 1/2 way of their curret reach?) : this will of course modify the aspect ratio but should, I believe, bring out a better composition with less "monotonous" areas? And it should help to bring back the size of the mountains (if not, maybe crop a lot more top and bottom (maybe the bottom more than the top))

Last night I tried to purchase your Dolomite locations map. Your time zone is 9 hours ahead of ours. The payment went through Apple Pay. I was prompted to select the correct image on the verification grid, which I did. Once completed, an error message popped up about a connection problem and I did not get to retry selecting another set of images. I also did not get an option to download the map. I also checked My Maps just in case. I appreciate your reply.

Very nice! I was there recently and your video brought me back :-) We missed the Passo Giau; such a great place! It is now in my list for if I find the time to go again. Thanks

Mads, do you realise that what you might think is a rock (20 seconds in) is actually a petrified (Giant) Tree Stump!

I was in Dolomites at around the same time. Great location and great pictures! I wonder what was the lens shoe you use at 10:37.

Great! Do you take a Backup-Camera? By the way - I totally prefer the 16mm-Version!

The Dolomites are spectacular. And you got some "epic" photos. Nice of you to include a map in the video. I just returned from a trip where I took two lenses, the 24-70 GM II and the 70-200 GM II, and two camera bodies. But, I cheated a little bit by also taking a 1.4x teleconverter. Waiting on the new 16-35 GM II. Next year I plan to use the A7CR as a travel camera. Your book looks great.

All shots were EPIC. I like the 16mm sunrise shot the best. The magnitude of the mountains gets lost in the panorama and it's too pink. I can only imagine how amazing a 360 sunrise that beautiful was. Maybe a 14mm lens would have given a little more sky, but not sure. Guess you're going back...So glad you didn't use generative fill. Stunning work!

Hi Mads, great photos as always! 👏 For the first image with the reflections in the water, what did you focus the camera on? The mountain, the person? It looked like you focused on the center of the frame? Is there a reason why this is better? And would love a separate video on time blending. That photo is amazing!

I'd go with the sunrise with more mountain and less sky. The sky just explodes into one's eyes.

One of my very favourite things about the 16-35 f4 is the internal zoom. If you’re taking panoramics, this is a godsend, as you don’t need to recalibrate the no-parallax points on your nodal slider every time you change focal length. Less important at greater distances or with a tele, but so useful in woodland or closer focal lengths. By the way, I too have the 50-400 on my Sony and am wondering if you ever have trouble auto-focussing on clouds with it? It’s a huge problem if there’s no strong contrasting edges. As I’m a recent convert to Sony, I’m wondering if it’s my focus settings rather than the lens itself. Other than that, the lens seems to be my go-to at the moment (I’m often alternating it with a very old Macro Takumar 1-1 in woodlands for close-up work. That old lens is still fantastic!). I haven’t found the vignetting to be troublesome but I do wish it had a zoom lock (or tightening function that its ((much heavier)) Sony competitor has).

I'm impressed with the photos from your Tamron. Previously, I used a Tamron 150-600 and was rarely satisfied with the results. Sold it and bought a Canon 100-400 and have been thrilled with the results...

Wow your content. As for the mountains, I think having less but higher mountains was the best 👌.

I hope to visit the dolomites very soon and you have lit a fire of creativity in me! Absolutely stunning images! I prefer the 16mm image, as the frame seems a little more balanced. Its a fantastic image 😊
