If you want to know how to play jazz standards on bass then you need to know how to play chord tones (arpeggios). This lesson will show you four that you see very commonly in jazz standards:
1. Major Seventh Arpeggio
2. Minor Seventh Arpeggio
3. Dominant Seventh Arpeggio
4. Minor Seventh Flat 5 Arpeggio
These four arpeggios will teach you a crazy amount about how music is harmonised and how you can make up fantastic bass lines.
For a really cool way to visualise and memorise the harmonised arpeggios of C Major, head here: onlinebasscourses.com/exercis...

After 2 years of following many different Bass tutors/players & trying to learn bass/music theory, rather than just learning songs by fret numbers (which i do as well) i have finally found your website Dan. I find your relaxed, most informative no bullshit approach to teaching , is helping me move ahead so much quicker now. (played in band as 16 y o, picked it up again at 68 ) regards from Aus. I just came here to say exactly the same thing, I've been searching the internet for a simple stripped back approach to learning modes etc, been playing over 30 years, could never understand it, Until now, Thank you good sir!!!

Another good one Dan,(there's really no bad ones.) It is always good to realize that you know some of these things but only didn't know the technical terms and of course a "Dan's way" of making it easier.

You just blew my mind as I move my bass playing and instruction into more jazz, you just brought something I hadn’t even thought of yet. Correct me if I’m wrong please, but it seems you are beginning an arpeggio on a root but then the 3rd or 5th is moved to a different position on the fretboard to complete the arpeggio... mind blown. And it was too obvious. And then you discuss and illustrate starting an arpeggio on the 3rd, or 5th instead of the root and practicing that concept until it’s fluid. It seems like this is unlocking being a creative musician rather than a perfect robotic, boring representation of root based musicianship. Mind blown again. Thank you so much for your instruction Dan. I’m now going to watch everything you have done! And practice and explore options all over the fretboard.
@OnlineBassCourses
@OnlineBassCourses 2 года назад
Thanks, Tony! Yes, I was changing patterns around. All of my videos present options really. There's no right or wrong way of doing anything and the biggest benefit comes from listening to your favourite players and figuring out what they're doing. It'll be the things I teach in some of my lessons! Once you get the connections, a world of possibilities open up. Keep it up!

Hi Dan, working through your Motown Basslines currently I follow your lessons as well. What do you recommend to play when a 6 chord is noted? Do you replace the 5 and 7 with the 6? Thanks a lot for your reply. Thomas
@OnlineBassCourses
@OnlineBassCourses 2 года назад
Thanks, Thomas! There aren't really any rules here. The 5, 6, and 7 all fit and will 'work'. You used whatever you want to. 6 doesn't mean you have to use that. Especially as a bass player...
@thomasdanick7969
@thomasdanick7969 2 года назад
Thank you Dan, that makes it easier. Thought a 5 or 7 could "bite" with the 6 in e.g. the noted guitar chord. Best regards Thomas
@OnlineBassCourses
@OnlineBassCourses 2 года назад
@@thomasdanick7969 if playing a chord, it may not work, but single notes - there are lots of options.

Can explain Arpeggio Inversions??
@OnlineBassCourses
@OnlineBassCourses Год назад
I’ll do a lesson. It’s basically an arpeggio that starts on the 3rd, 5th, or 7th. That’s inverting the arpeggio…

Thanks for the lesson! Uncomplicated and love the enlarged tab display. BTW...I guess you're a pretty busy musician, but do you provide bass tabs for a fee? I've been trying to learn 'More' by Simply Red & 'Food for Thought' by UB40 by listening & just can't crack them. There are tabs out there but they are not correct and sound off!

You're welcome! Thanks for watching. Unfortunately, I don't provide TABs for free. Sometimes I do if I do a lesson on it.
