On April 27, 1953, 4005 derailed due to a misaligned switch...
Shoutout to ‪@Thunderbolt_1000_Siren‬ for inspiring me to make this documentary. He has a really good video about 4005.

U.P. 4005 was stored outdoors at the old Forney Transportation Museum just outside downtown Denver at the old Denver Tramway powerhouse (now REI) before it moved to its new location a few years ago. Tracks had to be built to move it as the track near the museum no longer connected to main lines. My wife, daughter and I went to the old museum in 1998 and were looking around the locomotive. Our 3 year old daughter had disappeared, only to be found climbing on 4005 from the ladders at the front, she had gotten up as far as the smokebox. I climbed up and got her as there is no soft place to land if one falls on that thing.

This is the first time I've ever heard this story in all my years. I never knew that a big boy was involved in a derailment. That is some scary stuff.😱😭

I first heard about the 4005’s wreck from Thunderbolt 1000 Siren Productions’ video on the topic. While the criticisms on your narration style are valid, you did a good job describing it.

I have seen videos and read about the Union Pacific Big Boy 4005 wreck that occurred in 1953. Union Pacific did repair and rebuilt Union Pacific 4005 after this terrible accident. One of the thoughts that I have had about this wreck and accident is if this accident had occurred about 5 years later in 1958 when the Steam Locomotive era was coming to a close, Union Pacific would have scrapped UP 4005, because it would not have been worth repairing and rebuilding.

*Good point... So, she was brought back to life? OP made it sound like she was dead - terminally... Nice to see she was one of 8 that were saved!*

And nobody is going to comment on the apparently drunk or exceptionally stupid section crew that couldn't hear or see a literal freight train 500 feet away from him in the middle of a fucking desert?

It was a mistake, yes a catastrophic one, but a mistake none the less. None of us was there to witness what took place so we dont know what really happened and we never will. The guy who threw that switch carried that with him the rest of his life and the result had to have had a profound affect on he he was. If I had been the individual who threw the switch I would have spent the remainder of my life wishing the Big Boy had hit and killed me.

Nice video....but please, put a little more "upbeat" in the tone of your voice and narration style, because this sounds about as utilitarian and drab as reading a repair manual. It's bereft of any passion and affords the listener very little motivation to watch the whole thing...which I did not. Cheers

Interesting video. It’s hard to imagine that anything could possibly bring one of these leviathan sized locomotives to harm.

It’s rather impressive when you think about it. Out of 25 engines, only one big boy had a wreck. Solid working record and a good amount preserved

2:10 they threw the switch to change the signal and warn approaching trains, but im guessing 4005 was past the signal when they threw the switch. Horrible timing. Or did they literally throw it in sight of the big boy like the brakeman says?

I believe when 4005 came to the switch it had to go around a corner with a mountain blocking it. But why couldn’t the people hear 4005 is a better question

That's not too bad. Besides what others have said about being less monotone when speaking, I would say don't use the sound effect from Thomas and Friends like at 2:25. I would say to find one that sounds more realistic and more... jarring. If you know what I mean.

I can’t handle the computer sounding narration 😮
@patrickcalabro8718
@patrickcalabro8718 4 месяца назад
I don’t know 🤷‍♂️ anything about computers 💻 nor have I ever owned or operated one (thank God). The use of AI or computer-generated voice narration is used, in my opinion, so they don’t have to hire or pay💰 a narrator! The computer voice never gets a sore throat, never 👎 needs to take a breath, or stop 🛑 to get a drink of 💧 water. It turns written words into audible but not always understandable speech. 🗣 We are only in the Thomas Edison Stage of this new technology. But it does compel one to listen 👂 more because human voices can get tedious and distracting. thank you. 🎌 🚩 🧑‍🎤 🏁 👩‍💼 👩‍🎓
