I Found your channel from another RU-vidr who is a big fan of yours that you took to Italy for a show. I’ve bought 300+ different paints, 3 airbrushes and all accessories, 50+ different synthetic and natural brushes, I’ve looked at airbrushing, dry brushing, wet blending, glazing, a million techniques, and got to a point where I’m like shoot what do I even do everything seems like it’s great (dry brushing looks lame to me tbh but it works), I have spent 150+ hours watching videos and painted 0 times so far…. Your video is helping me get past all the theory and just start doing something for my warhammer collection.

I've never learned about that neutral grey before that's awesome! 9 years in mini painting now and I'm still picking up new stuff all the time. Love it! Can't wait to play with that, I feel like making my own desaturated colours is a weakness of mine and so I always turn to the pre-mixed paints for that. I hope this will help me level up for that.

Thank you for this lesson. I started using artist acrylics a year ago and discovered that I love mixing colours, part was freedom and part was getting that little dopamine hit that feeds the attention. But it was all experimental play with no deeper learning. I'm watching this at work and I want to rush home and follow the exercise. Thank you also for the warning about heavy metals. It does not come up anywhere enough in other mini-painting videos around artist acrylics. much appreciated. (As an aside, painting 40k miniatures became a lot more fun when I stopped trying to use the recipes that GW listed on the box and started organically mixing the layers and highlights.)

Hi. Great explanation of all the physical processes that take place when mixing paints! I have one tip of my own: I stopped using brushes to mix pain and started usig sylicone brushes (you know - those typically used for sculpting) - I find it much better expirience. With silicone brush you can push the mixed paint back into small ball on the palet and it's much easier to clean the brush for your next mix.

Hi. Thanks a lot for this vidéo! I was thinking about it for a while. I'm not youtuber at all but I was thinking about making a video about this subject. The only thing I could say more is that : Most of time, because some pigment have a lack of opacity, paint maker put some charges and white pigments to give more opacity , even in primary color. So I came back to my traditional beaux-arts paints , in that way I manage to have pure primary colors. I use ready-made colors but I adjust most of time with primarys. Instead of greys I used earths (ocre to burst umber with prussian blue to get it darker) so I'm impatient to see howyou use neutral grey. Nice job!

Great video! I find another great advantage of using artist paints, compared to miniature paints, is that they don't tend to change colour after drying. I think that the miniature paints with a lot of matte medium etc. are lighter and more opaque when wet, since the matte medium is white when wet before drying clear. I remember always being frustrated when trying to match a colour with miniature paints, being happy with it when it went on, only to have it turn out to be darker once dry. I think you are also right when you say to just use any highly saturated colours - it is easy to spend all day looking up paint brands and pigments, but ultimately the only way to know what you like is to start painting and try it.

what makes me mad the most is that i am in the grand scheme of it all still new to the game. i started back in 2020 during the pandemic and i am now love the hobby of painting... but not understanding how good artist colors are what you can do with it, is that i have a huge collection of colors from vallejo, citadel, scale 75 and more....if i had just settled and bought a set of artist colors and understood more of what i know now about color theory i would have saved so much money but have been better at understanding it all...but such is life, a constant lesson to learn about things...great video!!

Thanks for making this video. People don't believe me that 1) they were taught this in elementary school and 2) this isn't rocket science. Having them do this helps them understand that they can just play with the paint and see what happens, they don't have to study for a year before they touch a brush. Years ago I wanted a paint that I could airbrush and brush paint, so I tried Golden HIgh Flow. Their literature suggested that their starter 8 pack was designed to be a limited palette - all the colours you needed to paint anything. This got me interested in the idea of mixing everything and maintaining a limited palette. Unfortunately Golden High Flow is super glossy and I just couldn't see what I was doing while I used it. So I went back to Vallejo, trying to apply colour mixing. Except they have so much white and so many pigments in each pot everything quickly goes grey. I lamented that there'd never be a hobby paint which was single pigment and no added white. As if answering my prayers, Kimera announced their new line of paints. Really, they'd been developing it for a while before I had the thought, but I like to think I willed it into existence. I was part of the first pre-order and am on my second box - although now when I run out of a colour I buy a single from the FLGS that stocks Kimera (Ottawa is the hobby mecha of Canada, strangely) so that I always have 1 open bottle and one sealed bottle of each of the 13 original colours. And that's it. That's all I use. Exact colour matching is not as necessary as many believe - I've painted large models where each limb was painted on a separately day from a freshly mixed batch. If you tried really hard you could probably see that the colours are not exactly the same, but only if you know to look, take pictures and pull swatches.
@ROMANLAPPATMINIATUREART

I feel one thing that gets missed consistantly by these types of videos is one of the most important thing about pigments: Transparency. Contrast paints are not just normal paints thinned down, they are made with transparent pigments (when possible) to show the base colour through. Some pigments (reds, yellows etc) are naturally transparent, so in order for them to get good coverage in wargaming paints, they're mixed in with black and whites. This is also why mixing wargame colours can lead to desaturated, or surprising results. It is also why you can't just take any 'normal' paint and make a 'contrast' with it, when thinned enough, all paints feel transparent, but the black and white make it cloudy and defeat the purpose. Artist paints will show an icon for transparency on the bottle, some (like golden) even show a sample of the paint on the bottle.
@Samwinslol
@Samwinslol Год назад
Great point, and I think that sometimes people conflate "opaque" with "high quality" in the miniature world, even though many of the most beautiful pigments are transparent, and you can get some incredible fidelity using transparent paint layers. Dmitry Fesechko has a video where he lines his palette with opaque pigments on the left and transparent pigments on the right, which I think is a great way to keep track of your paint transparency.

Roman: This is a very good point. You are absolutely right, I agree, but there is a didactic reason why I did not yet speak about it so far. Check the next parts. I will speak about it when it makes sense, at least in my eyes. Thank you for your feedback. Really appreciated.

One step at a time. If someone is new to colour theory and paint mixing, adding information about pigment transparency or even pigment colour bias is just an overload waiting to happen. Think of things like this as a meal with many courses to gradually ingest rather than a single course, fast food meal that gets devoured in one go.

I've been working with a limited palate (not quite the primary only -- I def have some bottled raw sienna and burnt umber because mixing good browns has been a challenge for me), but I do sometimes feel like I'm floundering, even though I have a loose grasp of the basics. This was SO inspirational.. I am now googling high quality acrylics near me.. I want to try the challenge of painting a group of minis with only base colors. A question though: Why do you still have so many hobby paints, if mixing your own color wheel is so much more flexible and powerful? What value does an expert gain from having that many hobby paints?

Hi Roman, thank you for the video. Quite a few new things I learned. I also got a question: you are a big fan of the Schmincke acrylic paints. When checking out their website I couldn't quite figure out what the difference between their primacryl, acadamy and college range is (besides the price). Can you - as an expert and highly skilled model painter - elaborate on that? What are they good for and what are their differnces? Regards, Felix
@ROMANLAPPATMINIATUREART
@ROMANLAPPATMINIATUREART Год назад
Roman: thanks for your comment. The differrence is in the price and in the quality of the pigment in the paint. The college ones are often used for Kids in school to Experiment. The Academy ones are often used with a bit more skill as they allow more painting techniques and mixing. The Primeacryl are the peak of paint quality that you can get and are ofte used for professional work.
