About 30 years ago, I asked a man in a bar to apologize to my date. What he did does not matter. He slapped me. In those days, I weighed 160 and am only 5'3", but I was not fat. I worked out daily. My reaction was to give him a bear hug, lift him off the ground and run him into the brass rails surrounding the dance floor, which caused him to arch backwards. When I let him go, he collapsed to the ground, whereupon I punched him repeatedly, then proceeded to choke him out. As I felt the guy go slack, I also felt an enormous hand on my back. It was the bouncer, who told me to let go, then he urged me to leave. He had seen the whole thing from across the bar and thought I was justified. His manager called the police. The bouncer did me a solid, so I wouldn't get into trouble. 3 things. I don't regret my reaction to the slap. I am glad I didn't end up in jail for assault. Third; she dumped me for being "too violent". Now women like her complain that men are too weak. It's enough to make you crazy.

@@Quakeboy02 Not really. For example, you can't unalive someone because they slapped you. They didn't present deadly force. MAYBE if the aggressor was many times your size or had a previously attacked with a deadly weapon against that same person. Now, in the sense the victim then becomes unpredictable and could drastically escalate in ways you'd like to not find out, sure, but that options always there, just much more likely after slapping someone.

Good video, good to watch, and a damn good point about giving an aggressor the upper hand. I was a doorman at a club for years. You get very quick, and after awhile, you develop awareness where you can see guys swinging from the outside range of your peripheral vision. Learn to juggle, seriously, juggle while walking, while shopping at the grocery store, while walking backwards, while dancing. Start with some very light fabric scarves to get the hang of it, then do it a lot, until you never drop anything. You develop a super awareness of your full visual periphery. I really am talking from lots of experience. When a guy tries to sucker punch you from your side while you’re talking to some attractive woman, and you catch his hand like a bird out of the air, then turn and study him, you just changed his whole perspective. He won’t try that again. You just won. I did this many times, like I had a third eye skill, an extra sense that I wasn’t even seeking. Now you can slap him if you want, but then you really humiliated him, and you have to keep looking over your shoulder, because he might come back, and he won’t come back without a weapon. Remember, there is no defense against a surprise bullet. I always found the smart move is to send him away with some of his dignity still intact. Don’t break your cool, all you really want is for him to go somewhere else, cool down, and not come back. Remain sober, and always stay smarter than a drunk.

In most states, the legally required move to make if the attack is not immediately continuing, is back away and say you are backing away, while putting your hands and arms in a guarding position, plus to not inflame the situation with words. If the attacker continues, then it's legal to take self-protection action. However, as a practical matter, the attacker may have weapons. The best defense against a knife attacker is to move as far away as quickly as possible. If the attacker has a gun, same rule if possible, but, well, not likely any way to not suffer greatly if the attacker is determined.

Most of the game as you say is in the mind. Violence happens fast. You need to work physical techniques yes. But I have seen Black Belts who have trained in point style Karate. Get their Black Belts and never been hit. Younger days fought one guy like that. Beautiful technique. Controlled but I hit him in the face. He was stunned. He bowed out and said “you hit me!” I said yeah and? He said but you hit me. You expect in a fight not to get hit??? The guy that got slapped had the same reaction, like “you hit me!”. In the military that call it stress innoculation. You have to have the response trained into you before anything like this happens. Otherwise you’re already beaten. If you’ve already trained these types of situations. You head and body will do what they need to do.

Why should the aggressor get a free pass? Why should the aggressor be able to set the rules for an encounter that he started? That's just clown talk. The guy you slap just might have a gun. He's under no obligation to stand there with his gun drawn and allow you to attack him again. In fact, he's stupid if he does. The fact that you don't have a gun does not limit the other guy's right to respond to your aggression.

@rodtheworm
@rodtheworm 2 месяца назад
Context matters a lot here, though. If you're out somewhere and just want to make yourself safe and get out of there, a couple of kicks could definitely be justified. In a supermarket, where the witnesses might not have seen the first slap and may not even register that the other guy was going for a second before you hit them, you don't want the one thing they tell the police to be, "I heard a lot of shouting, I turned around, and then I saw this guy start stamping on the others' face." Like you said, if he's on the floor in that wrist lock, he's not going anywhere. If you keep that calm, ask the nearest person to call the police, their takeaway is going to be, "the other guy was getting angry and I heard a slap, but this guy defended himself and asked me to call for help." The instant you ask for help, you are establishing in the bystanders' minds that you were the one attacked and in the right. Then you get to sue the slapper for assault, with witness testimonies and police backing you up.

The good thing about slaps is that you can impart a lot of impact and pain without a risk of breaking the metacarpals with a punch. Striking with an elbow is pretty safe since the elbow is a very hard surface. But unless your fists are well hardened through hitting hard things - like a makiwara board a lot - when they hit heavy bones the metacarpals will give way long before a head will.

And that's why all these how-to-defend videos just suck. Most of us regular people are not only not trained for fight but also don't have the mindset required to instantly switch from casual business to battle mode. I mean the asian guy got hit, that sucks, it hurts and feels bad. Maybe he even got hit twice. But was his life in danger? No! Did he have to protect somebody else? No! So any violent response would have escalated the situation by magnitudes and caused a lot of damage and there's a good chance that he'd have ended up either in hospital or jail. So what else could he have done? Maybe some evasive moves? Trying to protect his head? Avoided the situation entirely? I don't know. What do know though is that you better don't try to be Bruce Lee when you aren't a fighter and haven't hit anybody in decades.
