Great video. I've seen it before but had to watch again. Your food forest talks, and permaculture philosophies are interesting and make total sense. Something clicked as you explained the journey from pasture to orchard to mid secession to full canopy. Your example of the old permaculture food forest systems by long standing native cultures at places like Green Lake (banana groves, bread fruit, kikoi nut trees,..) show just how in tune ancient native peoples were with their environments. Its something to strive for.

I haven't gone through all the comments here, the native inhabitants of Central and South America created a soil called Terra Prita, it's heavily based on carbon from charcoal. It should help with both water and nutrient retention. Also burying woody material that will break down and act like a sponge should help with water retention.

Thanks for the info Sean! Quick question for you : For the trees that will become large are you jack hammering a hole for them as well as building the layer of soil on top? Or are you just strictly planting above ground? I ask because I see that section of the video where you showed the jackhammer and the hole created.
@HomesteadinHawaii
@HomesteadinHawaii 3 года назад
That clip was just to show how rocky it is. I am not digging down. Just planting into the mulch that is on the surface. The roots will find their way.

@@bohopkins6916 I was kind of doing it in this video. Mom momʻs lot was just cleared so I used it for this video to show how to plant out and develop a food forest. Just spread black cinder over your planting area, then follow along with this video by spreading out mulch mixed with manure, let it sit for a little. Then plant your plants. Pretty simple.

@@HomesteadinHawaii Eh, we're always going to be able to go deeper, but this video did a great job of overview while without overloading, and will give folks enough material to work with. Plant selection for hardiness zone, sunlight/water/nutrient needs, spacing, years to bearing, etc. may be good to dive into a future video. Could break it down into each canopy level for your area to highlight key plants. It's been great to have this way to see where you're putting your energy. Glad you're spreading the word.

I wish I made a channel 10 years ago when I was working on a project in Malibu, but the next best time is today and it's been fun! Thanks for the tips. I have been playing around with a spoke and hub model for this video. This one was my main food forest video, then I'll get into planting, Tropical plants for the different layers, fertility for a food forest and so on and then they'll all point back to this one video. It's supposed to feed the RU-vid algorithm. We'll se what happens. when are you going to start a channel about your farm? Still in tough with PSC at all?
@ansonbiller
@ansonbiller 3 года назад
@@HomesteadinHawaii As soon as I get a spare moment from doing the work, haha. 2k perennials going in this year into the front field to expand the u-pick. Putting more intentioned focus on better stewarding the soil's microbiology through foliar sprays. Possibly building out a shipping container-style barn space. Beginning to experiment with plant sap analysis for targeting my nutritional program. Lots of learning edges. Just need to get to a place where I don't feel like I'm still sprinting to establish the farm's systems. :) And not in touch with the PSC since leaving CA, really. It's been challenging to keep up with West Coast connections as time has passed.
