While that is an unconventional way to tie it the bowline knot is actually a bowline. I watched it a few times as the final product looked right but getting there looked so wrong. I’m a pioneering instructor and can tie and teach a lot of knots. While it’s great to know how to tie knots knowing a few ways is better than just one and mist knots can be tied multiple ways. I like the idea of instruction but maybe pick up some the names and better techniques before posting. The noose knot isn’t a noose it’s an overhand slip knot and is usually the second knot I tend to teach people.

there is a simple way to keep your earbuds in a perfect order. catch Jack with your thumb and index, and divide your fingers in two groups, start binding like in 8 figure, so you get two loops with crossing in-between. then just take those loops out from your fingers and fold one over the other and put into your pocket or case. thanks to this two loop 8 shape the wire will never do a knot again :)

Explaining the construction of a bowline through an imaginary-marlin-spike knot setup is absolutely brilliant. I've learned and relearned the bowline but always had trouble being confident at retaining it (I just don't practice enough), but your explanation clicked for me in a new and exciting way. I'm quite certain that I'll start there in my mind with every bowline and have a much easier time with them from now on :D Also love the nice little stopper knot. I've always heard the single simple noose knot called a "fisherman's knot", and I use it a lot, but it never occurred to me to use it as a start for a nice thick symmetrical stopper knot. Great video, thanks for this!

Glad you corrected the bowline in the comments. That'll slip otherwise. I've used knots most of my life. The best ones I've learnt and use regularly. Hunters Bend, rolling hitch (best knot in the world, easily, but many incorrect methods of tying), bowline, anchor bend, and clove hitch. The overhand knot, though simple, should not be used.

I know most of these knots but my different names, the "noose knot" is actually a slipknot and shouldn't be confused with a noose. The way you tied the solid was super weird and the last knot you showed us is technically a double sheetbend because two different ropes were involved in the knot. And there is no need to ever use the "twin boline" I've towed seventeen canoes attached to one another each useing a single sheetbend.
@kylehart8829
@kylehart8829 4 года назад
The application is when you have two ropes of different thicknesses and a regular reef knot is untying itself, while being virtually as strong as a continuous line. It's a niche application but definitely useful to know.

As a hitch, maybe I might want to know that knot, instead of a clove hitch. But, the joining of two lines, I will stick with either square knots or single or double becket bends, the latter I prefer. For a knot as a stopper to keep a line or rope from running out, the figure 8 knot, which one would use at the end of a jib sheet. For a loop that slips, the running bowline. And, most importantly, for a fixed loop, the bowline, the best knot to know. Learn the bowline, and learn to tie it so you can do it without looking.
@twmcc2284
@twmcc2284 4 года назад
The actual knot used in what is labeled 'the double bowline bend' is a simple sheet bend (but also known as one of the weaver's knot); see Wikipedia, the Ashley Book of Knots, or any knot references. The way it is tied in the video is more difficult than the standard as shown in many sites such as Animated Knots, NetKnots, Laughingsquid (new), etc. One detail to pay attention to is which side the two working ends are (on).

In boy scouts they thought us that you're "noose knot" is actually called a "slip knot" kinda like the band. A young boy did ask if it was a noose and the teacher laughed at him and explained its a slip knot and how it works and that you can not actually break a neck with it because it was not made the same way as a actual noose

Full Rigor Mortis I’m a scout in South Africa and we call it a man harness hitch. No idea why it is called that. We use it for drawing things and loops to hang things off. There are better alternatives for both of these applications, but as it is quick to tie it is sometimes used.

Thanks for this vid, very informative. Love that someone corrected that bowline to the correct way. I need to mention, "bowline" is pronounced bow-lin, not bow-line. The only reason some people pronounce it incorrectly these days is that too many newbies pronounce the word just based on reading it. If you talk to an old sailor you'll hear "bow-lin".

@mds1986ms
@mds1986ms 4 года назад
No the guy above me is wrong too. Its a buntline hitch. You do not want to use this as a hangman's noose. The noose needs to be made of thick rope and have several rings making the knot long. The knot gets placed behind the left side of the head so when the person falls it snaps their neck. Otherwise you just choke and your eyes pop out and its a whole big horrific thing.
@casperschaugg1605
@casperschaugg1605 4 года назад
@@mds1986mswell yes generally when executing people the "noose" that they would use would be ridged, the tightening noose is what I was referring to. Also, when the neck snaps, the bowels are emptied (though not from the snapping, more from the force), that is why it was an unhonorable way to die, and even the french royalty who were executed didn't get hung, and that's why.

One tiny beef-- I spent my teen yearscas a stagehand. Everywhere they go stagehands tie a clove hitch ariund something and then add a half hitch of the bitter end around the standing part. While the clove hitch is theoretically a non slip knot, stagehands are taught to not risk expensive gear, multi thousand dollars worth sometimes, or LIVES on the smallchance that it might slip. That extra half hitch is such a habit tgat I don't think about it, I tie it by habit

I'd never thought about that connection between the bowline and marlinspike hitch. The bowline is just a MS hitch that uses the free end as the marlinspike. The only difference is that the Bowline is tied as a loop, whereas the Sheetbend is used to tie two cords together (or even to tie a a cord to the corner of a sheet/sail, hence the name). The Twin Bowline Bend is a bit overkill for joining two cords together. The Sheetbend will do it just fine.

I was skeptical at the beginning. So often a suggested knot is way to complicated. But this was great multiple use of one style of knot. I will add this to my other do everything knot. The figure 8. The figure 8 in multiple forms is also fantastic. I like how easily it can be used as a truckers hitch.

The 3-way symmetry you'll see in a well tied Ashley stopper knot (and elsewhere) is known as a "trefoil". Also, a knot that fixes two ropes together is called a "bend".

The *Marlinspike Hitch,* you say? No, it's not. Tied "in the bight," that's the *Manhaul Knot.* Tied "in the palm" and "laid on," that's some cordon knot. The "magic" of the *Marlinspike Knot* is that one utilizes the marlinspike itself to tie it, making it very efficient, even fun, to do. It's purpose is to "haul" the line, "setting" it, usually when tying Decorative Crown Knots. When doing so, it's necessary to tie this knot up to hundreds of times, so you can understand its reason for existing. On that topic, that's no marlinspike of a design I've ever seen -- and I've used ones from 60 years to two centuries old. A centerpunch, perhaps? It's cool to see this one core knot being applied to form a _hitch,_ _bend,_ and _loop(s),_ but everything else is inaccurate to some degree. _C'mon!_ Between Ashley (*) and I, we're centuries old! Did you think _someone_ wouldn't notice?! *P.S.:* The old, to mean _original,_ pronunciation of *Bowline* is _not_ _bow-line,_ nor _bow-lin,_ but _boo-lin._ It's "Old Salt" English, and has been old spelling of "Bulin." [Footnote: For those who are not aware of the reference, Ashley is the author of the prëemminent encyclopedia of knots and knotting].

I've never seen anyone tie a marlin spike hitch around a marlin spike without using the marlin spike to tie it. And I've never seen anyone tie a noose knot by tying an overhand knot around the standing part. That's the hard way -- make an overhand loop and pull a bight of the standing part through the loop. Same thing for the marlin spike hitch, you just kinda use the marlin spike like a crochet hook. Oh and when you tie a "twin bowline bend" you are tying two sheet bends. (4:07 is a sheet bend). But good job showing the Ashley stopper knot by putting the tag end through the noose knot - all the books make that knot way too hard. Even better is to pull a bight through and make a "slipped" Ashley stopper, and when you don't need it anymore, just yank it and the whole thing comes undone.
@blargo
@blargo 4 года назад
This. The instructions for the noose knot are overly confusing in this video, since it doesn't use the line configuration from the start - i.e., "the only knot you need to know".
@jasoncall3731
@jasoncall3731 4 года назад
A Bowline and a sheet bend share the same configuration, one being an upside-down version of the other as to the way I hold the line to tie it, with the difference that a sheet bend sports two bitter ends, while the Bowline with its loop has only one. What he ends up with then are two conjoined Bowlines, considering which parts are loaded under work.

twin boline bend is kinda overkill, half of that knot is called the Sheet Bend. the purpose of the sheet bend is to tie two ropes of different thicknesses together btw... the smaller one being the one that goes out sideways. for ropes of the same thickness the square knot would work.

I used to be a lineman and if you were caught taking a knife to a rope to cut out a knot they would run you off of the job. We had to be able to tie knots that were easy to untie after huge amounts of stress were put on them, the boline was a big go to knot, we had to be able to to do a short splice, long splice if we did not want to increase the diameter of the rope when we would do mile+ pulls and had to have a rope that was long enough, we had to weave eyes in rope and steal cable. my knot skills are a bit rusty now but your channel may get me back into tying knot tying. By the way we always spelled bowline "boline" if that makes any difference?

I use bow lines and end of line bow lines a lot. But those aren't slip knots. I also use a lot of trucker's hitches, and square knots with a loop. I'm also a big fan of the prusik knot which is effective if you need to make some kind of climb or if you are making handcuffs. But all of that is army taught rigging knots.
