Here is my opinion on this bass: This XL2 was originally intended to be white (evidenced by the overspray on the back of the faceplate), but it came out of the mold with a flaw in the colour and/or finish so it was chosen to be the first instrument to become red. You have to keep in mind that before 1986, Steinberger Sound had never made a fully composite instrument in red. Anyway, seeing as this was the first one to be red they hadn't nailed down the mix for the colour yet, resulting in it coming out kind of pinkish. They saw this and then corrected the mix for all instruments that followed. Still a one of a kind bass though!
That might’ve matched up visually with the pink Super Strat that Jeff Beck played when he was recruited to accompany Tina Turner in the making of the *Private Dancer* album
The Jets bass guy ordered candy apple red..see where it was dropped..pink all the way through..Billy signed it in Anoka mn at a bar he went to learn something new! Nobody knew he was there..Getty played either that one or Lons other stienberger first stienberger Getty played. He loved it. 3713 Stienberger himself made thar one. Less than 4000 ! 700 white the rest black except that one..Rock on
Sweet instrument. Sounds amaze-balls and looks comfy too. Interesting what you said about the emg's. I've had a few ibanez basses and never understood the grà as I found them muddy if I touched the tone. Humm 🤔 Food for thought. Might be a small upgrade experiment in the future. Lol😂
The Bartolinis they use in the midrange models are muddy as hell. The Nordstrands are not to my taste at call on the higher end ones. Honestly the pickups on the cheaper SR series are decent.
Great video and such a cool bass. Can you recall what bass did you use around 1993/94 when I would have seen you gigging quite a bit in Bad Bobs Backstage Bar (with Ms Roe on Vocal duties) in your Band. My recollection is perhaps a black Steinberger but not sure. Cheers. Niall
93-94 I had a stingray One of the first six bolt ones Then I sold that and went to a Hohner B2A The very same one I did a video on here! Well remembered Niall!!!
It’s a cracking bass, mate!! Sensitive is amazing, one of his best, from the early period, I think. Here’s the tutorial: Sensitive - Mick Karn Full Bass Tutorial ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Euz7VgBs4xY.html
I like the pink (red). I always felt that considering their high-tech construction and relatively futuristic looks that Steinbergers are not crammed full of fancy electronics? If you know what I mean?
Ha! Yes!! To be fair, some of them were - remember the ones equipped with a Roland guitar synth? But the cavity is actually quite small and I had to modify the wiring to get even this stuff in. I had to lengthen the cabling from the jack socket to the pots and bend the prongs for the pickups out through 90 degrees, because that massive central beam allows no room, really.
Hi! Mister Mind! I own a XL2 (1987) but the old Haz Lab is kaput, dead, and one a pick up (EMG SS) is dead. The other is out phasing. SO Didier Dubosq (a french luthier) have put two new EMG (one HBSC and on HB) . Without haz lab (dead) In your bass, have you always the Haz Lab preamp? Why BTC Emg? Benefits? pro, cons? THKS FRom France.
Bonjour! I take out the HAZ when they’re present It’s a silly system Forward for less bass and more treble, back for more bass and less treble What if I like how much treble there is, but want more bass? The BTC is a great little system My preference is for just a passive tone, but I had the BTC lying around. Happy with it so far!
I have one of the wooden Gibson stein burgers I think they're better than the original I love the passive EMG select pickups on them and the neck profile is far superior to the original horrendous half a jaffa orange neck profile of the original Ned steinberger basis which I played and tried in the early 80s which I didn't like at all at that period in the 80s the bass guitar that impressed me the most was the ViGeA passion base. That really blew me away I probably spelt that wrong
@@MrSilver261 the profile on the L2 is different to this, and it’s different again to my XL2TA I’m fairly certain they had different moulds to give variety. I had a Spirit with the phenolic fretboard which is how you’d spot an early one
@@mindhead2005 the bass guitar that really blew me away in the 1980s which I mentioned in my comments was the Viger passion bass I've seen them second hand I haven't seen a new one I don't know if the French company make them still but in my humble mind if you were a slap bass player they were perfect willow perfect for anything
Haven’t had any issues with EMGs before, and I have a LOT of them, so I’m giving them a pass on this occasion. Could even be something I got wrong myself on installation. I don’t think so though. :) The strap is just in case anyone needs to know there’s someone who understands there. It’s happened a few times.
Imagine a rainbow bass strap inspiring you to share with the world that you are a closed minded person. Uh oh, all of the primary colors are lined up, I better tell the world I have unresolved issues with my sexuality and the sexuality of other human beings.
The body? Yes, correct. Apologies if I left that out. Gel coat in the mould first, then the fibres and resin. early ones also had Kevlar, which made them difficult to drill etc..
Yes. I have them on all my instruments to show my support to anyone in the room who might need to know that someone is an ally It’s happened quite a few times!
@@mindhead2005 good job sir. Big men can afford to show support for others without diluting themselves. Small people get scared when they see a rainbow guitar strap.
