MLB draft rules indicate that a player can be drafted by a big league team right out of high school. While the player in question is a senior who is about to graduate after four years, there was one time, thanks to an obscure rule, where a junior was drafted.

As someone who went to school with Bonderman and attempted to bat against him, his only goal was to be a professional baseball player, he was driven. A teacher reprimanded him once to get back to work and Jeremy didn't want to, the teacher asked him well what are you going to do with your life? He straight up said, "I'm going to be a professional baseball player so it doesn't matter." He was drafted about 9 months later. It was cool to see.

If you took extra credits in the summer you would still be able to graduate a year early without a ged, skipping your senior year

Not every school does that. My hs didn’t

@alexandermckinley5168 yeah, it's only if the school district has a reach ahead summer school program, they are very popular here in Canada though

Yeah I did that with just a few online community college classes, and then graduated half a year early. And I wasn't even really trying to do that.

Yeah, I think that worked out pretty well for him in the end. Hard to argue with his decision

what a great story! I never knew any of this. Also did not know he grew up in the tri-cities, either.

Amobi Okoye was 19 years old And 10 months when he was drafted in the nfl about 15 years ago for the same reason. Played major college football at 16

Yup. He is also very intelligent. He just couldn't figure it out in the NFL. Wonderful person.

Bonderman was neighbors with the Stottlemyres, who influenced his career.

Bonderman ended up with more World Series appearances than Billy Beane's GM tenure on the A's

Unfortunately Bondermen got called up too quickly and never developed a 3rd pitch.😒

I think Landon Powell was also going to take the GED route, but ended up not doing so. Back in the 1960s, Virginia did not allow someone to get a GED unless that person had been out of school for 6 months. I don't know if this is still true there or anywhere else.

Actually most high school picks are mid to low picks and most of them go off to college and usually get drafted higher. Early first round picks are certainly a thing but with draft stock almost always going higher teams don't always want to risk a kid going to college and wasting a draft pick. Although for the first few rounds you get a compensatory pick if the player doesn't sign.
